Fein Oscillating Blades on Clearance at Home Depot, Replaced by Ryobi https://toolguyd.com/fein-oscillating-blades-clearance-home-depot/ https://toolguyd.com/fein-oscillating-blades-clearance-home-depot/#comments Sat, 12 Mar 2022 00:13:44 +0000 https://toolguyd.com/?p=88424 Ryobi-and-Fein-Oscillating-Multi-Tool-Blades-at-Home-DepotIt looks like Home Depot is changing up their OMT accessories section.]]> Fein-Oscillating-Multi-Tool-Blades-Discounted-at-Home-Depot

Here’s what the Fein oscillating multi-tool blade selection looks like at one of my local Home Depot stores.

As you can see, they have yellow price stickers (usually to indicate a product is on clearance), and the selection is sparse.

Ryobi-and-Fein-Oscillating-Multi-Tool-Blades-at-Home-Depot

The situation is similar at another nearby Home Depot store, but there are also now Ryobi OMT accessories on nearby pegs.

So… does this mean that the Fein Starlock-compatible oscillating multi-tool blades are all going on clearance to clear up some space for Ryobi accessories? This certainly looks to be the case.

Looking online, Home Depot’s website says there aren’t any Fein Starlock OMT accessories available for pickup near me at all.

This could be a big deal for some tool users.

Let’s say that you bought Makita’s 18V Starlock-compatible multi-tool. Well, that tool can only work with Starlock OMT blades and accessories. So, if you have that tool and need replacement blades, Fein’s blades were the only compatible options you could find at Home Depot.

Once the Fein blades sell out, if they are all being cleared out and replaced with Ryobi SKUs, you won’t be able to find any Starlock-compatible accessories at Home Depot.

None of the other cordless power tool brands that Home Depot carries have Starlock-compatible multi-tools, and so perhaps such a move wouldn’t affect a lot of users.

I should point out that Starlock blades are backwards-compatible with many tools that feature “universal” blade interfaces. So while Home Depot doesn’t have a wide selection of Starlock-compatible oscillating multi-tools, most if not all of the multi-tools they do sell should be compatible with Starlock blades.

Whether impactful or not, this is still an interesting development.

Plus, this could be a chance to snag Fein blades at a discount.

Dremel-Rotary-Tool-Accessory-Clearance-at-Home-Depot

I also noticed some empty pegs and yellow price stickers within Home Depot’s selection of Dremel rotary tool accessories. I wonder if this has anything to do with all of the new rotary tools and accessories that Ryobi recently announced.

New Dewalt Xtreme 12V Max Oscillating Multi-Tool is Coming Soon https://toolguyd.com/dewalt-xtreme-oscillating-multi-tool-dcs353/ https://toolguyd.com/dewalt-xtreme-oscillating-multi-tool-dcs353/#comments Fri, 28 Jan 2022 02:31:59 +0000 https://toolguyd.com/?p=87305 Dewalt-DCS353G1-12V-Max-Oscillating-Multi-Tool-Sanding-Wood-in-Tight-SpaceWho else is excited for the new Dewalt Xtreme oscillating multi-tool?!]]> Dewalt-Xtreme-12V-Max-Oscillating-Multi-Tool-DCS353G1

Dewalt is expanding their Xtreme 12V Max cordless power tool lineup with a new oscillating multi-tool, model DCS353.

The new Dewalt Xtreme 12V Max oscillating multi-tool features a brushless motor, tool-free blade clamp, 3.2° oscillation angle, 18,000 OPM max speed, variable speed trigger, on/off trigger lock, and an LED worklight.

Dewalt-Xtreme-12V-Max-Oscillating-Multi-Tool-DCS353G1-Blade-Clamp

The Dewalt Xtreme oscillating tool features their iconic squeeze-type quick-change blade clamp system, which is designed to work with universal-style split-ring accessories, such as the ones Dewalt offers. It also comes with a universal-style full-ring accessory adapter, which requires the use of a hex key.

Dewalt-DCS353G1-12V-Max-Oscillating-Multi-Tool-Sanding-Wood-in-Tight-Space

The Dewalt Xtreme brushless OMT looks to work with all of the same accessories one might use with a 18V/20V Max or corded tool.

Dewalt-DCS353G1-12V-Max-Oscillating-Multi-Tool-with-Scraping-Blade

Dewalt depicts the new Xtreme OMT being used for the same sorts of cutting, sanding, and scraping tasks as their 20V Max and corded tools.

Dewalt Xtreme 12V Max oscillating multi-tool (top) compared to the 20V Max XR model (bottom). (Scale is not exact.)

Compared to the 20V Max XR brushless oscillating multi-tool, model DCS356, the Xtreme model appears to be a little more compact. The geometry is different, such as at the front of the tool, and the Xtreme OMT also appears to have a smaller trigger switch, as well as a smaller main grip area.

The Xtreme 12V Max OMT matches the 18,000 OPM top speed of the 20V Max Atomic model, DCS354. The 20V Max XR model, DCS356, tops out at 20,000 OPM.

Dewalt-Xtreme-12V-Max-Oscillating-Multi-Tool-DCS353G1-Kit

The new Xtreme SubCompact multi-tool will be available as a bare tool, DCS353B, or in a kit, DCS353G1. The kit comes with (2) blades, a charger, (1) 3.0Ah battery, a tool bag, and a universal adapter.

Price: $129 for the bare tool, $159 for the kit
ETA: Spring 2022

Discussion

What I’m excited about:

  • Compact size
  • Kit comes with a 3Ah battery
  • Same tool-free blade change as other Dewalt OMTs
  • Reasonable price for the kit

What I could live with:

  • Variable speed trigger switch

A variable speed trigger is one of the best features in Dewalt’s cordless oscillating multi-tools. However, it can be difficult to hold the tool at a lower speed for sustained periods; a variable speed dial with on/off switch would be much easier for lower speed operations.

A variable speed trigger and speed range dial provide the best of both worlds. You can get this in Dewalt’s 20V Max XR brushless 3-speed oscillating multi-tool.

Dewalt’s 20V Max Atomic series brushless oscillating multi-tool, DCS354, also only has a variable speed trigger, and plenty of users have been perfectly satisfied with this.

What I’m a little concerned about:

  • Smaller main hand grip

I find Dewalt Xtreme 12V Max power tools to be very comfortable to hold and use, and I am sure that Dewalt tested the ergonomics of this new OMT with a broad user group. Still, it looks like they changed the hand grip positioning quite a bit with this tool.

Dewalt-Xtreme-12V-Max-Oscillating-Multi-Tool-DCS353G1-Side-View

When using Dewalt 20V Max oscillating tools, my hand wraps around the grip, with my pointer finger aligned with the rounded part of the trigger switch. With this Xtreme 12V Max model, it looks like my pointer will rest on the top part of the trigger switch, and my middle finger on the rounded part.

I attempted to simulate the Xtreme 12V Max-type of hand grip with my recently purchased 20V Max XR 3-speed model.

What I found is that the girth of the 20V Max tool creates some discomfort – which isn’t a big deal as I assume the Xtreme 12V Max tool is smaller – and that the on/off lock, which is used to prevent unintentional activation, is the bigger issue.

As shown in the images of the 12V Max tool, the on/off lock is positioned ahead of the trigger switch, and so it shouldn’t get in the way of my hand.

So while I am a little concerned about the shortened main grip area, I don’t think it will present any issues.

Dewalt-DCS353G1-12V-Max-Oscillating-Multi-Tool-Cutting-PVC-Pipe

One of the product images shows the Xtreme 12V Max OMT being used to cut a PVC pipe.

Dewalt Xtreme 12V Max Oscillating Multi-Tool DCS353G1 Hand Grip Closeup

If we magnify and enhance the image – insert spy movie sound effects – we can see that the hand and finger positions are indeed designed to be shifted upwards compared to the 20V Max models.

Different does not necessarily mean bad.

If Dewalt engineers managed to shave down the width of the tool around the trigger switch, it might even be more comfortable than their 20V Max tools. We’ll know for sure once the tool starts to ship.

One thing to be aware of:

Dewalt-Xtreme-12V-Max-Oscillating-Multi-Tool-DCS353G1-Cutting-Depth-Control

One of the product images shows the tool with Dewalt’s cutting depth control guide, but this accessory does not look to be included with the bare tool or kit.

I’m happy to see that the tool is compatible with this existing accessory.

On one hand, users have reported difficulty sourcing the depth guide, leading me to think it might be better if it were included with all tools. On the other hand, not everyone wants to pay extra for an accessory they might not need.

As far as I am aware, the cutting depth guide is not available as an add-on accessory, but it does look to be available as “replacement parts.” Here are Amazon listings for the three components (N275350, N278801, N275341). You can also order them from Dewalt’s service department for ~$25 including tax and shipping.

Thank you to Big Richard for the heads-up!

Over at Home Depot, this Ridgid 18V “special buy” oscillating multi-tool kit is priced quite low, at just $79.

It seems that Home Depot launched this Ridgid 18V cordless oscillating multi-tool kit, R86241K, for the 2021 holiday shopping season. I don’t recall ever seeing it in person, but I noticed the promo-priced kit online throughout the season.

There’s no shortage of cordless oscillating multi-tool kits to choose from. But what if you just want an inexpensive kit? This Ridgid cordless OMT kit seems like a really good value for the money.

It features a tool-free accessory change system, variable speed dial, and on/off power switch. It has a 3.2° oscillating angle and operates at up to 20,000 OPM.

The kit comes with the tool, a sanding pad, sandpaper, segment saw blade, flush cut blade, charger, and 2.0Ah battery.

Price: $79

Discussion

At $79, Ridgid’s kit looks to be a good value. According to the specs, you get a couple of starter accessories, and a 2Ah battery.

During holiday shopping seasons, Milwaukee’s M18 cordless oscillating multi-tool promo kit can be found at select retailers for $99. Dewalt usually has two $99 brushless oscillating multi-tool kit promos – a 20V Max Atomic kit with 2.0Ah battery, and a 3-speed XR kit with 1.5Ah battery.

While the Ridgid doesn’t seem very exciting, it seems like a really good deal. I hope this is a permanent addition to Ridgid’s 18V lineup.

Amazon Basics Oscillating Multi-Tool Blades – is This a Deal? https://toolguyd.com/amazon-basics-oscillating-multi-tool-blades/ https://toolguyd.com/amazon-basics-oscillating-multi-tool-blades/#comments Tue, 07 Dec 2021 14:46:14 +0000 https://toolguyd.com/?p=86459 AmazonBasics Oscillating Multi-Tool BladesWhat do you think about this 50-pack of AmazonBasics oscillating multi-tool blades?]]> AmazonBasics Oscillating Multi-Tool Blades

I tend to be very particular about power tool accessories, especially oscillating multi-tool blades. Over at Amazon, they have a 50-pack of carbon steel wood-cutting blades on sale for $27 and change, and I can’t tell if this is a deal or not.

The blades come out to be around 54 cents each, compared to the $6-10 I usually spend on quality brand-name blades.

Update 12/8/21: The price is now $45 and change.

Amazon Basics says that these can be used on wood or plastic. They’re fairly basic in appearance, and feature a 1-3/8″ cutting edge.

The interface also looks to be near-universal, and can fit most brands except for Starlock-equipped tools, the Bosch MX30, and Bosch quick-release tools.

I know that readers are split on their stances regarding oscillating multi-tool blades. Some of you have brand-name preferences, and others are of the opinion that they’re all the same and that any brand will work just as well.

I’d say that carbon steel is a level lower than bi-metal, with carbide-tooth blades above that. But at around 54 cents a blade, are these worth trying?

These are a new release, and look to be priced considerably lower than the other generic blade brands sold on Amazon. I wonder if this is a way to entice sales and reviews before regular pricing kicks in.

If you have used these or similar OMT blades before, what are your thoughts?

Price: $27.13 (as of the time of this posting

What would I buy instead? Bosch Starlock carbide-tooth blades. Starlock blades can work in many other brands’ oscillating multi-tools, and carbide teeth last so much longer in touch cutting applications. Should I try basic generic blades for cutting wood or other such materials? Maybe, but I haven’t been convinced yet.

Milwaukee 49-10-9220 Oscillating Multi-Tool Blade Set

One of the new items in Home Depot’s 2021 holiday gift center is this Milwaukee 20pc oscillating multi-tool (OMT) accessory kit with case, for $50. While this is an okay deal for 7 OMT blades, a scraper, and 12 pieces of sand paper, what is really interesting is the new case which has a few similarities to Milwaukee’s new hole saw cases.

Before we talk more about the new case, let’s look at the deal itself. Here’s a list of what’s included:

Milwaukee 49-10-9220 Oscillating Multi-Tool Blade Set Contents Breakdown
  • (2) 1-3/8″ titanium bi-metal OMT blades
  • (2) 2-1/2″ titanium bi-metal OMT blades
  • (2) 1-3-8″ wood cutting high carbon steel OMT blade
  • (1) 1-3/8″ hardwood cutting blade
  • (1) scraper
  • (4) 80-grit sanding pads
  • (4) 120-grit sanding pads
  • (4) 240-grit sanding pads
  • Hard case

These OMT blades all have Milwaukee’s Open-Loc interface. These “universal fit” attachments are compatible with Milwaukee, Dewalt, Rockwell, Ridgid, Makita, Craftsman, Ryobi, Porter Cable, Dremel, Fein, and Bosch oscillating multi-tools – except for Starlock-equipped models.

The hard case itself has a grid of holes that accept twist-lock pegs. This flexibility allows the pegs to be located anywhere in the grid to suit your OMT blade collection. The hard case also fits inside Milwaukee’s Packout organizers (compact or full-size but not low-profile).

Price: $49.88

Milwaukee 5pc Oscillating Multi-Tool Blade Set

There is also a 5 piece OMT blade set special buy. It comes with (2) 1-3/8″ titanium bi-metal OMT blades and (3) 1-3/8″ wood cutting high carbon steel OMT blades for $19.88

Home Depot also has a bundle set that includes both special buys, but at the time of this posting it’s priced at $75. It works out better to buy the two sets separately.

Discussion

Home Depot image describing contents of OMT blade kit

Shown above is part of the product image that shows what you get with the kit. It’s always a good reminder to double check retail sources, as it clearly shows a 2-1/2″ blade, while the text states it’s a 1-3/8″ blade. In this case the image is correct and the text is wrong, the kit contains (2) 2-1/2″ blades.

Stuart’s Note: We typically see a high frequency of product description errors this time of year. Sometimes the images are wrong and the text is correct. Pay extra attention.

Milwaukee Small Hole Dozer Customizable Hole Saw Case

This is the second application where we’ve seen Milwaukee’s interchangeable storage peg system. Is this just convenient for these two products, or are we going to see other cases use this same system? Also, while pegs from the hole saw case should lock into the OMT case, and vice-versa, you probably don’t want to swap pegs because of the height difference in the cases.

What I would liked to have seen rather than these custom hard cases for the interchangeable pegs, is for Milwaukee to have used Packout organizers. They could have created a grid that drops into a low-profile Packout organizer for the OMT blades, or a full-height Packout organizer for the hole saws. Wouldn’t that be better that the custom foam they made for the hole saw sets in the half-width Packout?

Makita has come out with a new 18V StarLock-compatible cordless oscillating multi-tool (XMT04ZB) as part of their SubCompact line.

Bosch and Fein’s StarLock oscillating multi-tool interface has been around for more than 5 years now, with more cordless power tool manufacturers building their tools with compatible interfaces. Metabo came out with a Starlock multi-tool earlier this year, and now Makita has joined the party.

The thing about StarLock blades and accessories is that most if not all of them are compatible with many other brands’ universal or Bosch OIS-compatible interfaces. However, StarLock tools are not backwards-compatible with other styles of blades.

Bosch, Fein, and other brands have been making StarLock-compatible blades and accessories for a couple of years now, and the last I checked they’re no more expensive than comparable universal-interface style accessories.

If you are in the market for a universal-style oscillating multi-tool, corded or cordless, you have two main choices to make today – you can go with Bosch and Fein’s StarLock interface, or universal-style open-ring blades.

StarLock tools usually feature very quick and easy to use tool-free blade change mechanisms.

Bosch, Fein, Metabo, and now Makita have Starlock-compatible tools, while Dewalt, Milwaukee, and other makers have non-proprietary universal-style interfaces. There are pros and cons to both.

There are 3 types of Starlock accessories – StarLock, StarLock Plus, and StarLock Max, with each tier corresponding to different power and performance requirements. With this being a StarLock Max tool, it should would with any StarLock style of accessory.

Makita StarLock Brushless Oscillating Multi-Tool Specs (XMT04ZB)

  • 10K-20K OPM
  • 3.6° oscillating angle
  • 276mm (~10-7/8″)*
  • Weighs 4.4 lbs with battery
  • Soft start motor
  • LED worklight

* The similar international model, DTM52, is said to measure ~10-7/8″ without battery (add maybe another inch for the battery). Makita USA’s press materials list a 17-1/8″ overall length, which cannot be accurate.

Makita DTM52 18V Cordless Oscillating Multi-Tool

The similar Makita DTM52, which launched internationally several months ago, features anti-vibration technology with no more than 2.5 m/2^2 of vibration.

Discussion

The StarLock Max interface is worth paying special attention to, as there are few options compared to StarLock Plus, at least with respect to cordless powered tools.

Fein has a cordless SuperCut, which is StarLock Max compatible, as well as StarLock and StarLock Plus, as each next-higher level of the interface is backwards-compatible with the lower accessory tiers as well.

Since power draw depends on the task, this should mean that the Makita SubCompact oscillating multi-tool is capable of being used with more demanding SuperCut-type of accessories, and hopefully without any compromise to runtime when used with popular StarLock or StarLock Plus accessories.

Most users will likely use StarLock accessories exclusively, but it’s good to be able to use StarLock Plus and even Max accessories if needed.

Makita seems to have a couple of different StarLock blade options (via Amazon), but I have never seen them in stores, where Bosch, Fein, and Diablo tend to dominate. The online pricing for Makita-branded accessories seem fair. When looking at their plunge-cutting blade, images of the packaging show that it’s made in Switzerland, presumably by Bosch.

This would make sense – Makita is likely licensing the StarLock interface tech from Bosch and Fein, and it’d be far less expensive for them to contract with Bosch for accessory manufacturing than to set up their own factory. If Bosch is indeed Makita’s accessory OEM, shop according to price – Bosch’s blades are excellent regardless of the brand name that’s etched into them.

Makita DTM52 18V Cordless Oscillating Multi-Tool StarLock Interface

Makita USA doesn’t show this in their press images for the XMT04ZB, but the identical-in-appearance DTM52 features a removable stud type of tool-free blade change mechanism. All of the cordless StarLock Plus tools I’ve tried from other brands don’t have this – their clamping designs do not feature any removable parts.

This is important because it will slow you down compared to blade changes with other brands’ StarLock-compatible tools.

I thought that perhaps this type of blade change mechanism was necessary for the StarLock Max interface, as I have only used StarLock Plus tools with the tool-free and stud-free blade change mechanisms. However, Festool’s 18V Vecturo cordless StarLock Max oscillating multi-tool also does not have a stud.

Is Makita’s stud-based tool-free blade change mechanism a deal-breaker? Absolutely not. But, this little detail is disappointing.

There are two things I like about Bosch’s StarLock multi-tools. First, it’s so much faster to change blades, especially when you don’t have to worry about a clamping stud. Second, it allows me to change out blades without burning my fingers or having to wait for a blade to cool down first.

The Makita XMT04 seems like more of a StarLock-compatible tool, rather than one with a StarLock-style of blade clamp.

I use non-StarLock tools fairly regularly, and there’s hardly a difference unless I’m changing blades out frequently. Meaning, if you want a Makita cordless oscillating multi-tool that works with StarLock blades, go for it, as long as you understand what you’re getting.

What confuses me is that you can use StarLock blades with most brands’ universal-style tool interfaces, except for StarLock Max. So couldn’t Makita have stayed with a universal-style interface and still be fully compatible with StarLock and StarLock Plus blades and accessories?

Bosch Fein Starlock Interface Standards

I suppose that the StarLock Max interface opens up compatibility to those larger SuperCut-type of accessories. But you can have StarLock Max tools with spring-action clamp.

With a stud-based blade clamp design, you don’t have the ease of blade changes as with other StarLock tools, and you also don’t have the accessory compatibility of a universal-style interface.

So with this tool, you have a proprietary interface, but with what benefits?

The tool itself seems to be fairly compact – going by international specs for the Makita DTM52 – and vibration-reducing tech is always a plus.

Looking at a video of Metabo’s StarLock Plus, they also have a removable stud, and so Makita isn’t alone in this.

Here’s what Bosch StarLock blade changes look like.

Since Makita’s tool has a stud-based clamping design, blade changes aren’t going to be any faster than with many universal-style tools using the same StarLock and StarLock Plus accessories, although you do gain StarLock Max compatibility. As mentioned, it’s probably not a deal breaker in my opinion – especially if you’re a Makita 18V user who has been waiting for an upgraded brushless OMT – this is just different than what I had expected to see.

Why did Makita launch their 18V brushless SubCompact multi-tool with a slower stud-based clamping design instead of the spring-loaded clamping mechanisms similar to the ones featured in Bosch, Fein, and Festool StarLock tools? Am I missing something? Maybe this was a condition of their licensing arrangement? Might Makita be planning to launch a 40V Max (36V) XGT version of this tool with a faster stud-free StarLock blade clamping mechanism?

Bosch Announces FEIN as an 18V Cordless System Partner https://toolguyd.com/bosch-fein-18v-cordless-power-tools-partner/ https://toolguyd.com/bosch-fein-18v-cordless-power-tools-partner/#comments Thu, 15 Jul 2021 14:39:15 +0000 https://toolguyd.com/?p=80847 Bosch Fein Professional 18V System Partner 2021 AnnouncementFein has joined Bosch's "Professional 18V System" of compatible tools.]]> Bosch Fein Professional 18V System Partner 2021 Announcement

Bosch has announced that FEIN will be joining their “Professional 18V System,” a group of brands whose cordless power tools are powered by Bosch’s 18V Li-ion batteries.

Bosch says:

We asked ourselves: How can Bosch Professional make hard work easier? The answer is simple: we opened up our battery system.

With just one battery system, you can change tools and brands – without changing batteries. This saves you time, effort and money. Less clutter, less searching. More space, more flexibility.

You have the freedom to use our batteries with tools from all these experts brands: Brennenstuhl, COX, Lena Lighting, Klauke, Sonlux, Wagner, Ledlenser – and now even Heraeus and FEIN. But that’s not all. In the future, you can expect even more expert brands for even more flexibility on the job.

Bosch Fein 18V Cordless Starlock Multi-Tool

Bosch’s social and marketing materials specifically show off a Fein cordless oscillating multi-tool being connected to a Bosch battery.

Bosch Fein 18V Cordless Starlock Multi-Tool Screenshot

As you might be aware, the Starlock oscillating multi-tool blade and accessory interface reflects a Bosch and Fein collaborative effort, and so it’s unsurprising for a multi-tool to be the first Fein cordless power tool that’s compatible with Bosch batteries.

Bosch press materials specifically reference the Fein Multimaster series of OMTs, and it is not clear as to whether other Fein tools might also be powered by Bosch batteries in the future. Here is additional messaging from the announcement:

In the future, the multi-functional tools in Fein’s Multimaster Series can be operated with batteries from the Bosch Professional 18V System.

Through the joint battery platform, Bosch and Fein are continuing a partnership that has existed since 2016: The companies jointly developed the Starlock system for standard tool mounting with multi-cutters and have been successfully cooperating on this basis ever since.

Offering simple solutions and different applications to customers are precisely the main advantages of the partnership for both Bosch and Fein, according to Dr. Christoph Weiss, CEO of the Fein Group: “Flexibility is necessary, especially when it comes to batteries. Users prefer open systems, i.e. one battery for several professional power tools and ideally across different manufacturers.” This saves money and makes everyday work easier. “We are convinced that, with the Bosch Professional 18V System, we are relying on the right battery platform for the future,” said Dr. Weiss.

It is unclear as to what Fein means by “with the Bosch Professional 18V System, we are relying on the right battery platform for the future.”

Is Fein launching a limited number of Bosch 18V-compatible tools, or does this news have bigger implications regarding Fein’s future 18V cordless power tool efforts and offerings?

Neither Bosch USA nor Fein have issued any news or announcements about this development.

There are two separate Dewalt oscillating multi-tool deals to choose from, depending on your preference, and we’ll talk about both.

(Milwaukee Tool fans – there’s an ongoing M18 deal as well.

This post was updated on 11/6/2021.

Dewalt Atomic Brushless Oscillating Multi-Tool Kit DCS354D1

Dewalt DCS354D1 Oscillating Multi-Tool Kit

First up, this promo kit features Dewalt’s Atomic 20V Max brushless oscillating multi-tool, model DCS354.

This is an update to the very well-regarded DCS355, which was a main-line tool and also featured in single battery kits for a couple of years.

  • Brushless motor
  • Tool-free blade change system
  • 0 to 18,000 OPM
  • Dual-Grip variable speed trigger
  • LED worklight

This promo kit, DCS354D1, comes with the tool, charger, sample blades, and a single 2.0Ah battery.

I don’t see mention of a tool bag – shown above is everything you can expect to get.

Dewalt Brushless 3-Speed Oscillating Multi-Tool Kit DCS356C1

Dewalt DCS356D1 Oscillating Multi-Tool Kit

Next, we have the Dewalt DCS356C1, a 3-speed brushless oscillating multi-tool kit.

You get the oscillating multi-tool, a 1.5Ah battery, charger, starter blades, universal accessory adapter, and a tool bag.

Features and Specs:

  • Brushless motor
  • Tool-free blade change system
  • 3-speed selector
    • Low: 0 to 13,000 OPM
    • Medium: 0 to 17,000 OPM
    • High: 0 to 20,000 OPM
  • 1.6° oscillation angle
  • Dual-Grip variable speed trigger
  • LED worklight

What’s the Difference, and Which Should You Buy?

The DCS354 has a single speed range, the DCS356 has a 3-speed selector. Both have a variable speed trigger switch.

This is what Dewalt said about the DCS356 when we asked about the differences:

The main differences between the ATOMIC and the 356 are the 3-speeds, the lower oscillations (clipped through the module), and the black lever for the blade change.

For the DCS356, we changed the software and added 3 speeds, but it will still have variable speed in the trigger. The 3-speed selector on the foot offers better control, in allowing users to set the max high speed with the selector instead of trying to hold the trigger switch partially in.

Basically, the DCS354 is the single-speed range version, the DCS356 is the 3-speed range version with XR branding that usually denotes a more premium Dewalt cordless power tool product.

The DCS356C1 kit comes with a 1.5Ah battery, and the DCS354D1 kit comes with a higher capacity 2.0Ah battery.

If you want the higher capacity battery and can do without the 3-speed selector, go with the DCS354 Atomic kit. If you want the 3-speed selector and tool bag, go with the DCS356 kit.

Personally, I’d go for the better tool, the DCS356. If you buy into the Dewalt 20V Max cordless power tool system, you’ll have more batteries and probably higher capacity batteries, either already or down the road.

If you change your mind down the road, you can always get more batteries to complement the one you get with this kit. You could also upgrade to the 3-speed tool if you instead choose the single speed model, but the bare tool by itself is $99 via Amazon and $139 at other retailers.

Yep – the bare tool featured in this $99 promo kit costs $99 by itself… and that’s why this is always a hugely popular deal.

For the same $99 price, I’d buy the 3-speed model:

Do you agree? Or would you go with the single-speed kit that’s bundled with the higher capacity Li-ion battery?

Ridgid has come out with a new oscillating multi-tool, model R86240B, expanding their 18V cordless power tool lineup.

While not exactly their first cordless oscillating tool, this is their first standalone tool, with previous iterations being JobMax tools with modular head attachments.

The new Ridgid 18V cordless oscillating multi-tool features a brushless motor, which Ridgid says gives users the ability to make fast clean cuts through drywall, wood, metal, and handle a variety of other jobsite applications.

Key Features & Specs

  • 18V battery platform
  • Up to 20,000 OPM
  • 3.6° oscillation angle
  • 15% more compact compared to JobMax tool
  • 15% lighter than the JobMax tool
  • Variable speed dial
  • Tool-free accessory changes

The new cordless OMT is part of Ridgid’s Spring 2021 wave of new 18V cordless and brushless power tools.

Ridgid R86240B Cordless Oscillating Multi-Tool Cutting into Wall

The cordless OMT delivers maximum performance when paired with one of their 18V Max Output batteries, but it will also work with all Ridgid 18V battery packs.

Price: $129 for the bare tool
ETA: April 2021 (part of a combo kit, R9225)

The tool comes with a sanding pad, sanding sheets, saw blade, and wood cutting blade.

Discussion

The new Ridgid cordless OMT looks to be quite compact, and certainly more compact than Ridgid’s JobMax combination of a modular tool handle and OMT head attachment.

This seems to be a new direction for Ridgid, with a focus on user comfort and convenience.

The bare tool will be dropping later, and if you want it sooner there’s the R9225 combo kit, which also comes with the new 18V hammer drill, 3-speed impact driver, and reciprocating saw – all brushless – and 2.0Ah and 4.0Ah Max Output batteries.

Harbor Freight has come out with their second Hercules 20V brushless-motor cordless power tool, a new oscillating multi-tool, model HCB42B.

The Harbor Freight Hercules 20V cordless oscillating multi-tool is said to deliver 45% longer runtime compared to their Hercules brushed motor product, and 20% more power compared to their “standard” product.

This is Harbor Freight’s first and only cordless oscillating multi-tool, and so the 45% longer runtime and 20% more power claims seem to be based on general brushless motor advantages.

The brushless multi-tool has a 3.1° oscillating angle, and previous marketing language said that it also features a universal-style blade interface. A tool-free blade change mechanism allows for quick and easy accessory changes.

The front of the tool features a dual-LED worklight design.

Additional features include a soft start motor, 6-speed variable speed control, and compact design.

  • 20V battery platform
  • 3.1° oscillation angle
  • 8,000 – 19,000 OPM
  • Weighs 2.6 lbs
  • 11.5″ length

The tool is sold as a bare tool only, although there are “build your own kit” promotions where you can save $25 in-store only if you also buy a battery and charger at the same time.

Bundled accessories include a 3/8″ plunge cutting blade, sanding pad, 5pc 120 grit sandpaper, 5pc 180 grit sandpaper

Discussion

We knew that Harbor Freight was launching a series of new brushless Hercules cordless power tools in 2021, although there was no way of knowing the order.

This new Hercules oscillating multi-tool looks okay on paper, and I assume that it features the same universal blade interface as previously advertised.

Harbor Freight Hercules 20V Brushless Oscillating Multi-Tool Sanding Wood

Is there a dust port adapter? No, or at least I cannot find one on Harbor Freight’s website.

Harbor Freight sells a surprising range of oscillating multi-tool blades and other such accessories, and even a handful of Hercules-branded blades.

The pricing of Harbor Freight’s accessories aren’t very compelling, but you should be able to use other brands’ blades without issue. Which ones? They don’t specify, but it looks like Imperial’s blades (buy now via Amazon) will fit. (The linked-to Imperial Blades bulk packs, starting with their 3pc pack, beat Harbor Freight Hercules on pricing.)

It’s good to see Harbor Freight upping their game, but savvy shoppers that haven’t already purchased into the Hercules 20V cordless power tool system will occasionally have a couple of other compelling options available to them.

Just a few months ago, you could have purchased a Dewalt brushless 20V Max oscillating multi-tool kit for $99, or a Milwaukee M18 oscillating multi-tool kit for $99. The new Harbor Freight oscillating multi-tool bare tool is $100 by itself.

At the time of this posting, the regular Dewalt brushless kit, with more accessories than the $99 seasonal kit, is priced at $174 via Amazon.

If you need a full kit with the Hercules, their 2.0Ah battery is priced at $25, and their standard charger is $30. Buy it all in-store, and you’re looking at a $130 kit price (after $25 bundle savings). That’s pretty good for a brushless motor cordless oscillating multi-tool outside of holiday shopping seasons.

The idea of better performing and higher quality Harbor Freight Hercules tools is still very new, but it seems to be working out for them.

Discussion

Metabo has come out with some interesting new 18V cordless power tools recently, and here we have a compelling new brushless oscillating multi-tool.

In case you are unfamiliar with this type of tool, it can be used for a wide range of cutting, scraping, grinding, and sanding tasks. The short intro video (embedded below) is a good display of popular application examples.

Bosch and Fein’s Starlock interface has been around for some time, and it’s good to see new compatible tools outside those two brands.

Bosch Fein Starlock Interface Standards

One thing to be aware of is that Starlock tools can only be used with like-styles of Starlock blades, or smaller, meaning you can only use Starlock Plus and Starlock blades with this tool. A heavier duty tool would be needed to work with Starlock Max blades.

I would also remind you that Starlock accessories are backwards-compatible with older non-Starlock blade interfaces.

Metabo shows off the new oscillating multi-tool with a compact 4Ah battery, a pairing I would agree with.

Bosch Tools is firmly in the doghouse with us right now, for various reasons. I am hard-pressed to recommend any Bosch tools or their accessories.

But, in no uncertain terms, their carbide-tooth oscillating multi-tool blade remain an extremely high-performing near-universal-fitment type of accessory.

The OSL114C is a StarLock-compatible carbide-tooth blade, which I find to be great for all types of cutting, and especially metal screws and nails that absolutely destroy bi-metal blades.

Buy Now via Amazon– $80 for a 10-pack and eligible for extra savings

This is what happened to a bi-metal blade I had been using to cut wood and PVC, but then grabbed to quickly cut through 3 stripped screws when taking a planter project apart.

Bi-metal blades can handle a nail or two. Screws? Forget about it.

These Bosch blades, however, would have cut through them with much greater ease and less blade destruction.

But I Don’t Have a StarLock Tool!

That’s okay, you can still use these blades

These days, I prefer Milwaukee’s cordless brushless oscillating multi-tools, and have been using Milwaukee’s made-in-USA blades with them exclusively for testing. StarLock is a neat interface, but I don’t like being locked into just one or two brands of accessories.

The good news is that Bosch StarLock accessories are backwards compatible with their previous OIS interface, which means they work with other brands’ oscillating multi-tools. It is StarLock tools that are restricted to only using StarLock blades.

The Amazon listing says:

Star lock interface for professional performance, also works with OIS compatible tools including Bosch, Fein, Milwaukee, Makita, rigid, others.

“Carbide is all Marketing and isn’t Actually Better”

There are two main types of oscillating multi-tool users, 1) those who use carbide blades for tougher bi-metal blade-destroying applications, and 2) those who have never used carbide-tooth blades and refuse to believe they can be X-times longer-lasting.

Bosch says these blades will last 30X longer than “standard bi-metal blades,” and while that number seems fluffy, carbide teeth do last much longer than bi-metal.

It’s hard to recommending that you try these blades at $11-13 each, but at $8 each when you buy a 10-pack, the price gap between quality bi-metal and quality bi-metal is greatly diminished.

If these blades will fit your tool, now’s a good time to try them.

The Deal

Amazon has a 10-pack of these blades for $79.93 at Amazon. Other sellers have the 10-pack at considerably higher pricing. The 3-pack is $31 via Amazon.

Buy Now via Amazon

AND, the blade pack is eligible for extra $20 off $100+ savings, which helps to lower the per-blade cost further.

See More $20 off $100+ Items

You could order 2 blade packs and call it a day, or add other power tool accessories or tools to the order.

How about self-centering drill bits? Countersink drill bits? Screwdriver bits?

~$80 for 10 blades is a good price, as they come out to be $8 each. But if you can add at least $20.07 of other eligible tools to your order, you get an extra $20 discount.

There’s Also Diablo

Diablo seems to have rebranded Bosch and Dremel oscillating multi-tool blades, but the pricing simply isn’t as good as with these Bosch blades, at least not that I’ve found.

Prices went up since we first reported on the new blades.

But do you see what I mean? $15 each for the Diablo blades when you buy a 3-pack, vs. $8 each when you buy the Bosch 10-pack, or less if you take advantage of the $20 off $100+ promo.

Yes, spending $80 for 10 blades is a greater risk than less for fewer blades, even if the unit cost is much higher.

Carbide-tooth oscillating multi-tool blades are not indestructible, but in my experience they’re worth the premium over bi-metal for when cutting metal. Also be sure to let the tool do the work – excessive pressure can help hasten wear and damage to these blades.

Somehow, Milwaukee’s magicians engineers managed to shrink down their compact impact wrenches by an almost impossible amount.

A few years ago, a product manager told me that even shaving 1/4″ off the length of an impact driver was a great achievement.

Here, taking Milwaukee’s 3/8″ impact wrench as an example, they chopped – not shaved – the length of the tool head down from 5.9″ (2754) to 4.8″ (2854). AND they increased max torque as well.

Over at CPO, they have a really good deal bundle on the new Milwaukee M12 Fuel oscillating multi-tool.

For context, the bare tool sells for $149, and a home center has a deal bundle right now where you get the bare tool and a single M12 battery for the same price.

At CPO, they have this special buy priced at $169, model 2526-2411-BNDL.

Here’s what you get:

  • M12 FUEL Oscillating Multi-Tool – 2526-20
  • (1) 1-3/8 in. High Carbon Steel Wood Blade – 49-25-1101
  • (1) 3-1/2 in. Triangle Sanding Pad – 49-25-2001

First of all, I am really liking this new Milwaukee brushless oscillating multi-tool. It has a tool-free blade change mechanism, and quite a lot of power and cutting performance for a tool of its size.

With this bundle, you get the tool, a small starter assortment of multi-tool cutting and sanding accessories, an M12 charger, (1) 1.5Ah and (1) 2.0Ah battery, and a Packout tool bag. All this for just $20 more than the bare tool.

This seems like a “run, don’t walk” deal for anyone looking to get this new M12 Fuel OMT in kit format.

I mentioned the bare tool being priced at $149. There’s also a kit, 2526-21XC, which comes with a charger, soft tool bag, and M12 XC 4Ah battery, for $205. Other sellers have it at $219.

Some of you have been commenting that I’ve persuaded you to spend more money than you expected to this holiday season. But with this special buy, which I would presume will only be valid for a limited time, you’re saving quite a but of money compared to the regular kit.

With the bare tool at $149 and the kit at $205 to $219, this deal bundle is an incredibly good bargain at just $169. If you ask me, it’d have been a great bundle deal even without the Packout tool bag.

IF you’ve been looking for a brushless 12V-class oscillating multi-tool, or were considering buying the M12 Fuel OMT at a later time, this is going to be a very hard to deal pass up.

At the time of this posting, 2526-2411 seems to be a CPO-exclusive Milwaukee kit. It’s possible other Milwaukee dealers will have their turn at offering this special buy later in the holiday shopping season. And so, if you’re on the fence, this could either be your only chance to buy this special bundle deal, or it might only be the first opportunity.

Harbor Freight News: More Hercules Brushless Power Tools Coming in Spring 2021 https://toolguyd.com/harbor-freight-hercules-brushless-power-tools-2021/ https://toolguyd.com/harbor-freight-hercules-brushless-power-tools-2021/#comments Wed, 04 Nov 2020 14:26:07 +0000 https://toolguyd.com/?p=73102 Harbor Freight Hercules 20V Brushless Tool TechHarbor Freight has teased about several new Hercules brushless power tools.]]> Harbor Freight Hercules 20V Brushless Tool Tech

Harbor Freight recently sent out an email, promoting their new Hercules 20V Max brushless angle grinder that we recently posted about.

In that email, Harbor Freight showed the above image, saying that their brushless motor tech is jobsite tested technology, delivering up to 45% more runtime.

Harbor Freight Hercules 20V Brushless Tool Tech Details

Their “learn more” link directs readers to a Hercules cordless power tool landing page, where there is a single panel briefly describing brushless motor tech as more efficient.

They tout intelligent electronic communication between motor and battery, and batteries that deliver extended performance.

Harbor Freight has also teased about new Hercules brushless cordless power tools, set to launch in Spring 2021. That puts the following new tools at roughly 4-7 months out.

Harbor Freight Hercules 20V Brushless Reciprocating Saw

There will be a new Hercules brushless reciprocating saw, featuring an anti-vibration design and keyless blade change. Harbor Freight says it will deliver 60% more cuts per charge.

Harbor Freight Hercules 20V Brushless Oscillating Multi-Tool

The new Harbor Freight oscillating multi-tool is said to have a universal blade interface, keyless accessory change, and deliver constant power under load.

Harbor Freight Hercules 20V Brushless Circular Saw

Lastly, there is set to be a new brushless Hercules circular saw, with 7-1/4″ blade size, right-facing blade, and 2-1/2″ max cutting depth at 90°.

We don’t really know much more about these upcoming Harbor Freight Hercules 20V brushless power tools, but it’s certainly interesting to know they’re working on an expansion.

Why tease about these new tools now? Harbor Freight may be looking to lure over new customers and Hercules cordless power tool users. Knowing what’s on the horizon can be quite convincing to those shopping for specific tools now and with plans to upgrade or expand their kit in the future.

I wonder – is brushless motor tech jobsite tested because other brands have fielded such tools for years now, or has Harbor Freight ramped up their R&D efforts, sending prototypes out into pro users’ hands in a similar manner as some other brands have been doing.

Over at Amazon, they’re holding an early Holiday 2020 deal on this Dewalt 5pc oscillating multi-tool blade set, model DWA4216.

Why you want it: If you have a Dewalt corded or cordless oscillating multi-tool, these accessories allow for tool-free blade changes, due to the split-ring interface design. Some other brands also have a similar interface, and won’t work tool-free with full-ring accessories.

Dewalt makes decent power tool accessories, and their oscillating multi-tool blades tend to be well-recommended.

Is it a good deal?: The regular price looks to be $35 and up, but Amazon has it on sale for $25, saving you $10. I’d say *yes*.

What you get:

  • (2) DWA4203 blades for wood cutting
  • (1) DWA4206 blade for fast cuts in wood
  • (1) DWA4213 blade for flush cuts
  • (1) DWA4217 blade for scraping
  • (1) snazzy hard-shell storage case

Also Consider:

Home Depot has a holiday promo that’s not active online yet, where you get a 4pc blade set and screwdriver bit set for $20. You’re not getting the same blades as here though, but it’s still an alternate to consider.

More About Diablo’s Universal-Style Oscillating Multi-Tool Blades https://toolguyd.com/diablo-universal-oscillating-multi-tool-blades/ https://toolguyd.com/diablo-universal-oscillating-multi-tool-blades/#comments Thu, 08 Oct 2020 12:00:59 +0000 https://toolguyd.com/?p=72093 Diablo Oscillating Multi-Tool Blades Dual InterfaceLet's talk a little more about Diablo Tools' new universal-style OMT blades.]]> Diablo Oscillating Multi-Tool Cutting Blades

We posted about the new Diablo oscillating multi-tool blades the other day, and a question came up via email.

Why do the “universal” OMT blades have two sets of holes?

Diablo hasn’t provided any information about these new accessories, but luckily Dremel has. If you recall, Diablo, Dremel, and Bosch are all owned by the same parent company. The new Diablo oscillating multi-tool blades look to be nearly identical to the interface Dremel used to offer on their accessories.

Diablo Oscillating Multi-Tool Blades Dual Interface

From this diagram by Dremel Tools, we can see that one set of hole and notches are to ensure compatibility with several power tool brands’ oscillating tools, and the other set of notches is to fit tools by another set of brands.

Thanks to this dual-interface design, Dremel – and now Diablo – universal-style oscillating multi-tool blades are compatible with tools from:

  • Dremel
  • Bosch
  • Makita
  • Milwaukee
  • Rockwell
  • Dewalt
  • Fein
  • Porter Cable
  • Ridgid

There could be some exceptions, aside from these accessories not being compatible with Bosch or Fein Starlock oscillating multi-tools.

Diablo’s product listings say that their accessories fit most tools, no adapters needed. This is why.

And, they should work with brands’ tool-free interfaces as well. Some brands’ oscillating multi-tools are only tool-free with broken-ring accessories, requiring a hex key and adapter for use with accessories that have a full ring with no slot down the middle.

Starlock accessories are also compatible with a wide range of brands’ oscillating multi-tools, but won’t work tool-free with the tools that require an open ring design.

Any questions?
