As we previously reported, Milwaukee is launching new USA-made screwdrivers and pliers this year. Retailers have opened up preorders, giving us a look at how much all of the new tools will cost.

The new tools are priced at a premium, which was to be expected. Milwaukee said their new USA-made tools would be competitively priced, and it seems they’ve stayed relatively true to this.

Milwaukee USA Lineman Pliers Cutting Armored Cable

For instance, the new Milwaukee Tool 9″ Lineman’s pliers with comfort grips, MT550 is priced at $44.97, compared to $39.97 for the Klein Tools J2000-9NE.

Milwaukee USA Diagonal Cutters Used on NM Cable

Milwaukee’s 8″ diagonal cutters with comfort grip handles, MT558, and dipped handles, MT556, are $39.97 and $34.97, respectively. Klein Tools’ 8″ heavy duty diagonal cutting pliers with comfort grip, J200059SEN, and dipped grip, D2000-48SEN, are currently priced at $39.97 and $34.97, respectively.

Wera 2023 Advent Calendar Tool Set – First Look https://toolguyd.com/wera-2023-advent-calendar-tool-set/ https://toolguyd.com/wera-2023-advent-calendar-tool-set/#comments Fri, 31 Mar 2023 01:21:55 +0000 https://toolguyd.com/?p=103941 Wera Tools 2023 Advent CalendarHere's a first look at the Wera 2023 advent calendar tool set.]]> Wera Tools 2023 Advent Calendar

Here’s an early look at the Wera 2023 advent calendar tool set.

Yes, it’s not even April, but the new Wera tools look too cool to hold off on discussing.

Wera Tools 2023 Advent Calendar Tool Set

The Wera 2023 advent calendar, 05136607001, comes with a 9-tool metric hex key set, micro screwdriver handle with 6 bits, screwdriver handle with 5 double-ended bits, slide-on screw retainer, bottle opener, fabric case for the screwdrivers, and a holder for the hex keys.

Wera Tools 2023 Advent Calendar Hex Key Set Wall and Bench Mount

The hex keys have an ordinary appearance, with straight hex tips at both short and long ends, and a plain finish.

However, look at that case! The holder can rest flat on a benchtop or tool cart, with the tools upright and ready for picking up, or it can be wall-mounted.

Wera Tools 2023 Advent Calendar Hex Key Set Removable Case

And, should you need the tools to come with you, the holder can be quickly removed from its wall-mount for portability.

That seems pretty cool, and I don’t believe I’ve seen any hex key set organizers quite like this before.

Wera Tools 2023 Advent Calendar Screwdrivers

You also get a micro screwdriver bit holder and what looks to be a standard bit holder, plus a selection of bits for both.

Price: $87-90
ETA: Fall 2023

As usual, this looks to be a decent introduction to Wera tools, and it might also offer enough to appeal to users who might already own a bunch of tools from the brand.

In my opinion, the hex key set holder is the star of the show. It also seems like great inspiration for a 3D printed solution for users already happy with the hex key sets they already have.

Thank you Fred for the heads-up!

Milwaukee USA Hand Tool Factory Tour – More Details https://toolguyd.com/milwaukee-usa-hand-tool-factory-tour-details-2023/ https://toolguyd.com/milwaukee-usa-hand-tool-factory-tour-details-2023/#comments Thu, 23 Mar 2023 15:58:36 +0000 https://toolguyd.com/?p=103685 Milwaukee Hand Tool Factory Pliers Production ImageHere are some more details from my factory tour.]]> Milwaukee USA Pliers Cutting Wire Rope

A few months ago, I toured the new Milwaukee Tool factory in West Bend, Wisconsin, where they are producing hand tools in the USA from 100% USA-made materials.

This took place in August 2022, and I was last told at the start of this year that the new tools will be launching in mid-2023.

Photography was strictly prohibited, but I was permitted to take notes when possible. I recently reviewed my notes, and thought ToolGuyd readers would appreciate some of the details.

Milwaukee Hand Tool Factory Pliers Production Image

To start off, the factory is 95,000 square feet, and was built with expansion in mind, such as with a blow-out wall that can be removed when needed.

Milwaukee Tool invested $55 million to open the factory, and at the time they said they expect to employ more than 150 workers there.

The factory has modern automation and Industry 4.0 processes, with everything digitally connected.

Every process involves automated measurements, checks, and controls.

To start off, the pliers undergo press forging, as opposed to hammer forging. This involves less processes and contributes to better grain uniformity. It was later added that hammer forging, in comparison, is less precise, produces parts of lower strength, and does not modify the inner structure of the forged materials.

We were shown publicly-available “how it’s made” video footage of a competitor’s product line, as an example of how to make inferior pliers and cutters.

Milwaukee Tool made no effort to hide that they’re looking to take on the industry champs.

The initial forging process is done with a 1600 ton press, where a 2000A induction heater brings the billet to 2350°F for 2.5 seconds.

Underneath the press is a 14-foot concrete pad that, if I recall correctly, was completely decoupled from the rest of the factory floor in order to minimize vibrational transfer. The main floor sits on an 8-inch slab of concrete.

Vaughan, a USA-based hammer manufacturer, recently decommissioned large equipment from their factory. In their social media post, they said: 5000# drop hammer moving out to make space… was told that base weighs over 100,000 pounds. Bushnell residents might remember when this was being used… you could feel it almost around the whole town.

Milwaukee designed their vibratory pad and concrete foundation to ensure there’s no vibration transfer to the machining area, let alone outside the building.

Milwaukee Hand Tool Factory Pliers Handle Dipping Image

The tools are made using all USA-sourced materials. This means they will be 100% made in the USA, without the need for “global materials.”

The trim waste is sent back to the steel manufacturer. We were also told that Milwaukee is not mixing metals for reclaim.

One of the talking points was about how the processing steps are so precise and consistent that left and right sides of pliers can be matched months apart.

The matching precision also allows for the jaws of long nose teeth to be matched with grooves aligning peak-to-valley for “incredible gripping power.”

Laser hardening of the jaws and teeth is used, rather the induction hardening, for precise control, and long-lasting edges.

The auto riveting process was a high point of the tour, showcasing Milwaukee’s automated fine-tuning process, which gives their pliers the “smoothest open and close.” There’s no break-in process needed, the pliers are smooth to open and close right from the start.

Unfortunately, I neglected to record how many points of measurements are taken in order to achieve this. But, it was made clear that this is a benefit of automation rather than leaving pivot/rivet installation up to human variances.

We were handed pliers to examine, and they felt perfectly broken-in. An early pliers sample was shipped to me, and the same is true. It remains to be seen whether off-the-shelves tools will have the same perfect feel, but I have optimistic expectations.

The end of the tour brought us into an on on-site quality and materials testing laboratory, where there was an abundance of equipment, such as Instron testing systems, an optical comparator, Zeiss coordinate-measuring machine (CMM), hardness testers, and more.

They have the ability to test things such as screwdriver torque, pliers open and closing effort, and cutting edge life. I wish we were able to see some of the testing in action!

It was planned that the factory would run 3 shifts 5 days a week, with weekend surge potential if or when needed.

What surprised me most is that there were 3 sets of machines for one stage of pliers production, each capable of outputting up to 10 pliers parts an hour.

If that’s the bottleneck, it means the throughput was limited to 30 parts an hour. Keep in mind that pliers and cutters require two parts.

As I understand it, this explains why it’s taking some time for the first wave of tools to launch.

Here’s what it takes to produce pliers and screwdrivers:

Milwaukee Tool USA Pliers Manufacturing Steps

  • Forging (press, not hammer)
  • Coining
  • Automatic CNC machining
  • Laser edge hardening
  • Automated Riveting
  • Polishing
  • Handle Assembly
  • Laser Etching
  • Finish and product inspection

Milwaukee Tool USA Screwdriver Manufacturing Steps

  • Machining
  • Deburring and grinding
  • Handle Assembly
  • Laser etching
  • Inspection

Lastly, the forging dies have a life cycle of 10,000 strikes, and can be redressed for extended life.

Milwaukee said that they invested $450 million dollars in the USA over the last few years. $55 million towards this factory seems like a small but meaningful part of that.

The new 95,000 square foot factory was designed with the potential for growth and expansion in mind. Milwaukee Tool also has the right of first refusal to purchase an additional 20 acres in the area.

The factory is located in a new 216 acre industrial park in West Bend, which is 20 minutes away from Milwaukee Tool’s global and R&D headquarters.

More than 5 years ago, Milwaukee Tool Group President Steve Richman said the following:

Milwaukee Tool is dedicated to driving growth and creating new jobs in the United States.

At the time, Milwaukee Tool employed over 3,500 people in the USA.

As of February, 2023, Milwaukee Tool “proudly employ[s] more than 10,000 people in the U.S.”

What do you think Milwaukee Tool will do with up to 20 acres of developable land in an industrial space 20 minutes away from their main campus?

Milwaukee Tool has been producing new pliers and screwdrivers in the USA, after opening their new hand tool factory in West Bend, Wisconsin several months ago.

A lot of people have been asking about when the new tools will be available. The new pliers and screwdrivers are not yet available at retailers, but should be soon.

At the start of 2023, I asked Milwaukee Tool for an update and received the following:

We received an overwhelming amount of excitement from the announcement of our new cutting pliers and screwdrivers. Our teams are working hard to deliver the most innovative and highest quality lineman’s, diagonal and long nose pliers, and screwdrivers from our new state-of-the-art production facility in West Bend, Wisconsin.

We are looking forward to getting these new hand tool solutions into the hands of our users in the middle of 2023.

Mid-2023 was the only official ETA I had been given so far.

If this estimate continues to hold true, I expect to see the first wave of new USA-made Milwaukee hand tools as early as May or June. July also counts as mid-year in my book.

Why are They Taking so Long?!

When we toured the new Milwaukee hand tool factory in August, 2022, production was up and running.

My understanding is that the initial rollout will require many tools, and it’s taking time to build up the necessary volume.

Milwaukee has many independent, online, and retailer tool dealers, with Home Depot the largest. According to Home Depot’s 2021 annual report, they have a little more than 2,000 stores in the USA.

Assuming Home Depot will carry Milwaukee’s new USA-made hand tools, even if not in main aisle promotional displays, the initial offering will involve many thousands of tools.

I have been in the factory, seen the manufacturing cells, and held early production samples in my hand.

The new USA-made Milwaukee hand tools are on the way.

I just placed a new order with KC Tool, a German hand tool supplier, and it seemed fitting to share my reasoning with you.

Everything was in stock, and it shipped already. I’m a little antsy, and didn’t want to wait for the tools to arrive.

Plus, this will give me a head start in tackling any questions once they do arrive.

Knipex 95-05-20 Angled Electricians’ Shears

Knipex 95-05-20 Angled Electrician Shears White Background

I posted about these Knipex angled electrician’s shears the other day, and was curious about them.

I had placed an order at Amazon, but there was no ETA and it hadn’t shipped out yet. It was recently stocked/restocked at KC Tool, and I couldn’t resist. Plus, KC Tool has it for less.

These don’t strike me as a must-have, but I’m a sucker for ergo-grip and angled tools.

NWS 5.75″ Needle Nose Pliers

NWS Needle Pliers - MicroFinish

These long nose pliers were on my wishlist, and I’ve been saving it for a “I need something else to get free shipping” purposes.

I have other NWS mini pliers, with cushion grips, but this looks different – they cost a lot more and so hopefully they are. Are they worth the premium price? Worst case scenario, I could always use more needle nose and long nose mini pliers.

NWS lists these as discontinued, but I couldn’t find any replacement SKUs.

NWS Economy 4.75″ Chain Nose Pliers

NWS Economy Chain Nose Pliers - MicroFinish

I also picked up chain nose pliers from the “economy” line.

There are “economy” pliers, with lap joint jaws. There are also more premium versions – “classic-line,” and “micro-line.”

Let’s see what these can do.

NWS Classic-Line 4.5″ Chain Nose Pliers

NWS Classic Line Chain Nose Pliers - MicroFinish

The Classic-Line pliers have a box-jointed pivot design, compared to the economy’s lap joint. Is that worth the price? This model is close to $36 whereas the economy line pliers are close to $23. What do you get for a nearly 57% premium?

If you want to know more about any of these tools, please let me know! It will take a few days once my order arrives, but I should be able to provide early feedback within a few days.

NWS Micro-Line 4.25″ Micro Side Cutter

NWS Micro-Line Side Cutter - MicroFinish

Lastly, there’s also Micro-Line mini pliers.

I couldn’t find comparable pliers to the chain nose pliers, but these mini side cutters should provide some insights. It seems that NWS Mico-Line pliers are a little finer than Classic-Line.

What’s strange is that Classic-Line and Micro-Line pliers have similar model number schemes, suggesting that the Micro-Line are similar but a little smaller.

Witte 94904 Pro Plus Phillips #2 x 4″ Screwdriver

Witte 94904 Pro Plus Phillips Screwdriver

I have tried Witte screwdrivers before, mostly miscellaneous screwdrivers I found at a Woodworking Show liquidator’s sales bench a few years ago. This will be a nice reintroduction to the brand. Phillips #2 drivers are a great way to judge overall handle comfort and tip quality.

Witte 73035 MaxxPro Stainless Phillips #2 x 4″ Screwdriver

Witte 73035 MaxxPro Stainless Phillips Screwdriver

I also wanted to try out the MaxxPro style, with stainless steel shafts.

I’m aware of the benefits of stainless steel tools – reduced chance of corrosion, flaking, or contamination of stainless steel hardware – but haven’t tested them out myself yet.

Do they hold up as well as traditional screwdrivers? Are there any downsides? Let’s find out!

My First-Ever Eklind USA-Made Hex Tool Purchase https://toolguyd.com/first-eklind-hex-tool-purchase/ https://toolguyd.com/first-eklind-hex-tool-purchase/#comments Wed, 22 Feb 2023 17:30:08 +0000 https://toolguyd.com/?p=102539 Eklind 22pc Ball Hex Key SetI am finally giving Eklind tools a try.]]> Eklind 22pc Ball Hex Key Set

Eklind is a highly-regarded manufacturer of hex tools. They make Allen keys, T-handle drivers, folding tools, and other sorts of hex drivers.

I am sure I have used Eklind tools before, as brands like this often manufacture tools for other brands. Some of my equipment purchases have included Eklind tools in their maintenance packages.

But until today, I have never purchased any Eklind-branded tools. Whenever it came time to make a new purchase, other brands always won me over, such as Bondhus or PB Swiss.

It recently became very clear that my parents and other family need good quality hex keys. Let’s just say that a recent visit involved loose dining room table legs, a folding hex key tool, and a bag full of miscellaneously sourced Allen keys.

As an aside, I really need to make another shoebox-sized portable tool kit to travel with.

Bondhus is my go-to for USA-made hex keys, but their current pricing seems a bit high. (The same is true across the tool industry right now.) Their 22pc set is now more than $31 at Amazon and other retailers, which I feel is a bit too much for basic hex keys.

When searching other retailers for better pricing, I came across the Eklind 13222 set – a 22pc set of inch and metric hex keys for less than $21. Sold!

These Eklind L-keys have straight hex short ends, and ball hex long ends, similar to Bondhus and many other brands’ hex key sets.

I promptly ordered a set for my parents, and another for my brother-in-law.

With what I have heard about Eklind over the years, these hex keys should work well and last a very long time. Just to be sure, I ordered one for myself as well.

If you’re looking for a new set of basic but trustworthy ball-end USA-made hex keys, these might be fitting for you too.

Milwaukee Tool is quietly releasing a new line of multi-bit screwdrivers, featuring a new ergonomic handle design, built-in bit storage, and greater versatility.

One of the interesting and potentially very convenient features is that the bit holders are removable. They all have 1/4″ hex shafts that can be chucked into cordless drills or non-impact screwdrivers and other such tools.

Additionally, Milwaukee says you can insert screwdriver bits directly in the handles, for easier access in tight spaces.

The 1/4″ hex shanks are described as being “wrench-ready” for wrench-assisted turning if greater torque delivery is needed.

To my knowledge, all of these new screwdrivers are Milwaukee Tool’s first multi-bit drivers to work with insert-style bits.

Here are the new models:

14-in-1 multi-bit screwdrivers

  • 14-in-1 multi-bit screwdriver – 48-22-2900
  • 14-in-1 Torx screwdriver – 48-22-2907

From the product images, the two screwdrivers look to have very similar handles, but with the ratcheting driver being a little longer.

    Milwaukee Multi-Bit Screwdriver 48-22-2900 14-in-1 Bit Storage

They each come with 13 screwdriver bits, plus the removable bit holder that doubles as a 1/4″ nut driver.

The 14-in-1 will be available in general purpose, Torx, and hex bit configurations. All versions have chrome-plated bit holder with magnetic retention.

The 27-in-1 screwdrivers are just a little different, featuring double-ended screwdriver bits.

    Milwaukee Multi-Bit Ratcheting Screwdriver 48-22-290

As with the 14-in-1 drivers, the ratcheting version is slightly longer to accommodate the gearing and direction selection switch.

The bit holder is also different, with a spring clip-style holder for bit retention.

    Milwaukee Multi-Bit Screwdriver 48-22-2901 27-in-1 Bit Storage

The bit holder looks to be the same size as with the 14-in-1 screwdrivers, but with different clip placements.

27-in-1 and ratcheting 27-in-1 screwdriver bit sizes:

A common feature across the line, you can remove the bit holder and insert screwdriver bits directly into the handle’s built-in 1/4″ hex socket.

    Discussion

Milwaukee’s previous and existing multi-bit screwdrivers feature either bayonet-style shafts with reversible bits, or are designed around power-style screwdriver bits that can be removed and used with cordless drills and drivers.

Not to mince words, Milwaukee’s existing multi-bit screwdrivers are decent, but easily replaced with any number of tools from other brands.

These new multi-bit screwdrivers look more convenient to use, and while not groundbreakingly innovative, they do have some nice selling points. Plus, they pack more bit styles and sizes per tool, except for the compact/stubby drivers, which are evenly matched with their predecessor.

This looks to be a very good refresh of Milwaukee’s line of multi-bit screwdrivers.

    Milwaukee Multi-Bit Screwdriver Guide 2023

Milwaukee’s product guide suggests that these new models will be replacing their existing power bit-style screwdrivers.

In my opinion, it’s nice in theory for a multi-bit screwdriver to come with longer power bits that can be used with a cordless drill or screwdriver. But in practice, it made the screwdriver handles thicker and heavier, and bit changes can be a chore.

    Older Style Milwaukee Multi-Bit Screwdriver
    Older Style Milwaukee Multi-Bit Screwdriver

With Milwaukee’s older style of multi-bit screwdriver, there were 6 bit-holding slots built into the handle. It came with 7 bits, one of which always had to be stored in the bit holder. As it turns out, this could be a benefit, as I always had to use the loose bit to push the one I needed free from its storage slot in the handle.

I think I’ll like these new drivers, but time will tell. Some of the features are lost on me, such as how the 1/4″ bit holder shaft is “wrench-ready.” But overall, I’d take these designs over many others.

The removable bit holder can be a convenient feature as well. However, it’s not impact-rated. There’s no mention of this either way, but I don’t know of any chrome-plated screwdriver bit holders that can be used with impact tools.

The pricing seems fair compared to industry-leading competitors’, but I’d expect a larger gap between manual and ratcheting versions.

I’ll probably pick up the 14-in-1 hex screwdriver the first time I see it in stores, and maybe the manual stubby driver too. I like that you can insert a bit straight into the handle socket for use in smaller spaces.

The holiday season is here, and for many people that means new gear, gadgets, and of course toys with screw-closure battery compartments.

This Stanley 4-in-1 screwdriver (STHT60082) is priced at just $2.49, and at the time of this posting it’s eligible for free shipping at Home Depot.

It comes with 2 double-ended bits that cover the following sizes: Phillips #0, #1, slotted 1/8″, 5/32″.

The screwdriver is of course versatile enough to be used beyond opening up battery compartments.

I got a robot model kit for my nephew this year, and it requires a screwdriver to fasten in some of the parts. So, I sent along a Stanley 4-in-1 screwdriver to ensure he has everything he needs to build it.

Actually, it was a different Stanley screwdriver that I sent him – the older model that’s nearly double the price – as this model was temporarily unavailable for shipping.

I have been a long-time fan of Stanley’s mini screwdrivers, and have used this model as well as its predecessor. They’re excellent for the money.

If you’re on the fence, and it’s available, keep in mind that it’s just $2.49 shipped. At this price, or even a bit more, it’s a household must-have.

    Klein Pocket Screwdriver 32614 Hero

    Klein Pocket Screwdriver

If you’re looking for a more premium precision tool, consider the Klein 4-in-1 pocket screwdriver.

The Klein 32614 features a reversible shaft with two positions – a short end for quick use and pocketable carry, and a long end for greater reach. In the short position, the end of the screwdriver extends to protect the screwdriver bit tip – and your pocket – for storage or carrying.

It comes with two double-ended screwdriver bits that cover the same tip styles and sizes as the Stanley above: Phillips #0, #00, Slotted 1/8″, 3/32″.

    Price: $15.97

    Klein 32581 4-in-1 Precision Screwdriver

    Klein 4-in-1 Precision Screwdriver

Klein has another 4-in-1 electronics screwdriver, model 32581, with the same tip styles and sizes.

This model is similar, but isn’t as compact or well-suited for pocket-carry.

    Price: $10.97

PB Swiss 169 Insider Mini Pocket Tool

    PB Swiss Insider Mini

The PB Swiss Insider (model 169 Type 1) is a pocket screwdriver with 3 double-ended bits.

I have found that this model better fits smaller fasteners, especially those in deeper recesses. If this one can’t get the job done, you’ll need individual mini or precision screwdrivers.

There’s a downside to this model – it features all-plastic handle (like the far less expensive Stanley). But on the upside, this also means it’s lighter than the Klein.

    Sizes: Phillips and slotted #0, #00, #000

The Klein 32308 stubby multi-bit screwdriver seems to pack a lot of functionality while still being affordable.

Klein Adjustable Length Stubby Screwdriver 32308

The stubby screwdriver features built-in bit storage, and it comes with an adjustable-length bit holder.

Klein Adjustable Length Stubby Screwdriver 32308 Shaft Extension

This means that, even though it has a stubby-style handle and compact size when closed, you can extend the length of the bit holder for added reach.

Klein Adjustable Length Stubby Screwdriver 32308 with Impact Driver

Its magnetic bit holder and 7 included insert-style screwdriver bits are also impact-rated, and can be used in an impact driver if hand-tightening isn’t enough for the task.

Klein Adjustable Length Stubby Screwdriver 32308 Applications

The screwdriver is at-home with electrical and industrial fastening tasks and applications, but its features can also serve general purpose use just as well.

It also features a spinning end cap for “optimum and precise control.”

    Included screwdriver bits:

    • Phillips #1, #2, #3
    • Slotted 3/16″, 1/4″
    • Square #1, #2
    • 1/4″ hex Nut driver

This seems like a highly practical multi-bit screwdriver for general purpose use. Well done, Klein. User reviews seem to be very positive.

It seems like a great sidekick for any tool kit. I wouldn’t want this as my one-and-only multi-bit screwdriver, but its small size means it takes up less space in a pouch, tool box, or drawer. The adjustable length bit holder makes up for the short handle, and can be removed for use in an impact driver if needed.

    What’s not to like?

I bought this set last year for $80 and would buy it again, without hesitation.

    • T25 X 4″ (80025H)

The set was $57.23 yesterday when Amazon’s Prime Day sale kicked off, and the price could continue to fluctuate.

As mentioned, I spent $80 for the 20pc set, and definitely feel that I got my money’s worth. At under $60, it’s a HOT BUY.

    Price: $54.36

While you’re at it, I also recommend Gearwrench’s 6pc Pitbull pliers set, on sale for $74.39. Their 4pc set is also on sale, for $55.96 after clickable coupon.

You see, I was scouting out Labor Day tool deals, which usually involves my snapping a few pics of floor displays for further research at home.

I came across a Craftsman screwdriver set at Lowe’s – your typical multi-piece set aimed at DIYers and casual users – and it struck me as particularly bad value.

I felt that this Craftsman screwdriver set deserves some words, but not in a good way, and so it seemed like a better idea to springboard into a buy this, not that type of discussion.

Lowe’s has a Kobalt screwdriver set that I would absolutely buy over the Craftsman one, but it seemed inadequate to stop there. So, I added in a couple of more recommendations.

Towards the end, I realized that my “here’s what I recommend instead” post had broadened well beyond its original scope, naturally evolving into an impromptu DIYer screwdriver set buying guide.

Because of that, this post reads more linearly than the typical list of recommendations you might be used to. I hope you’re okay with this, and if not, let me know and stay tuned for the update.

Craftsman 12pc Screwdriver Set – What NOT to Get

Craftsman 12pc Screwdriver Set at Lowes

With the Craftsman deal, you get a 12pc bi-material screwdriver set for $34.98, saving you a whopping $3 off its crossed-out “was” price of $37.98.

That’s… not a good bargain, to put it lightly.

You get 6 standard full-size screwdrivers, 2 miniature screwdrivers, 2 stubby-style screwdrivers, a double-ended offset screwdriver, and a screwdriver magnetizer and demagnetizer accessory.

I know that “inflation” and all, but $35 seems like a lot for this.

If you look closely, the large price sticker is covering up what looks to be $27.98, which seems a bit better.

Looking online, this same set is $24.98 with free shipping on $45+ orders.

Readers have recently reported having difficulty getting Lowe’s stores to match online pricing, but one could always try that.

$24.98 is a little better than $27.98 and a lot better than $34.98. Did this set ever sell for $37.98?

I have purchased similar Craftsman screwdrivers before, for review purposes, and the handle is fairly comfortable.

But this configuration? I’d rather spend half as much for just the 6pc set. Or maybe $20 for an 8pc set of full-size drivers.

Stubby-style screwdrivers can come in handy.

Okay – I’d find it appealing if the 6pc full-size and 2pc stubby screwdrivers were together in an 8pc set for $20 or less. Bingo – they have this for $21.98.

If you’re spending $22, another $3 gets you 2 mini drivers of questionable quality, an offset screwdriver that might come in handy one time if you don’t lose it, and a magnetizer/demagnetizer tool that might be good to have if it’s well-made.

But, the Craftsman 12pc set isn’t $25 in stores, it’s only that price online right now. If you’re at the store, which is how I impulse-buy most of my hand tools from Lowe’s or Home Depot stores, it’s $34.98 right now.

Maybe next week it will be $27.98, as seen behind the sticker? But that’s still far away enough from $21.98 for the 8pc set, and I wouldn’t consider it a great deal. It’s an okay upsell, but not a better bargain, if that makes sense.

I think this is an example of what not to get.

    Craftsman Model CMHT65071
    Item No. 1071663

Would anyone of you choose this Lowe’s-exclusive Craftsman set? I’m worried that maybe my feelings about the set are colored by my reaction to Lowe’s promotional (or pre-promotional?) pricing.

It’s amazing how much pricing can skew one’s opinions. If this Craftsman set had a $20 sticker price, my take on it would be completely different.

I bought a smaller Craftsman set on impulse one year (for testing and editorial exploration purposes), and have nothing against their handle style, or the tip quality for the money.

So, if you can snag it for less, it might be a good buy. But given the pricing I’m seeing, I feel there are better ways to spend the same money today.

Kobalt 20pc Screwdriver Set – Getting Better

Kobalt 20pc Screwdriver Set at Lowes

Alright, so what would I buy instead? If only shopping at Lowe’s, where the aforementioned Craftsman set is an exclusive, they have this Kobalt 20pc screwdriver set for $24.98 online.

Kobalt is a Lowe’s brand, and so you can only find their tools exclusively at Lowe’s. Craftsman is not a Lowe’s brand, but the set discussed above is specifically labeled as an exclusive.

This Kobalt set comes with 11 full-size screwdrivers, 6 mini screwdrivers, 2 offset screwdrivers, and a bottle opener. All of the handles look to have bi-material cushion grips.

What are the sizes? Lowe’s website doesn’t say, they only specify: “Sets feature popular sizes to satisfy wide range of fastening needs.”

From the product images, it looks like you get typical Phillips and slotted screwdriver sizes, plus maybe 2 Torx drivers.

This would be a decent starting-out screwdriver set, at least as far as what you can find at Lowe’s.

I’ve used many Kobalt screwdrivers before – probably with this handle style, I don’t recall – and they’ve always been decent.

You get more for the money here, not just with respect to quantity, but the sizes and type of screwdrivers you get in the set.

Researching just a little more, this set was $20 last year for Black Friday.

Wera 6pc Kraftform Screwdriver Set – My Premium Choice

Wera Kraftform Plus 334-6 Screwdriver Set with Lasertips and Rack

If we’re taking the Craftsman’s in-store price of $35 into consideration, I would instead buy this Wera Kraftform Plus 6pc screwdriver set.

The handles are comfortable, and the tips have a fantastic “Lasertip” anti-cam-out texture.

These Wera screwdrivers are fantastic. I own many, and love them as general purpose screwdrivers. They’re pricey, but worth it.

I have more premium-priced screwdrivers at my disposal, but these Wera’s are a reliable workhorse that will likely always be a part of my kit.

    Don’t Forget a Mini Screwdriver!

    Stanley 4-in-1 Pocket Screwdriver STHT60082

I would also budget $2-3 to get this Stanley 4-in-1 pocket screwdriver, which covers smaller sizes.

At the time of this posting, it’s $2.28 at Home Depot with free shipping.

If I need to stick to a $25 total budget, I’d get the Stanley 4-in-1 pen driver (here are other pocket and technician screwdriver suggestions), and probably this Husky 6pc screwdriver set from Home Depot.

I really like this Husky 6pc diamond-tip magnetic screwdriver set, and I’ve posted about it before.

Husky is a ToolGuyd sponsor, and so I tried to avoid the brand for this discussion, but I like this screwdriver set too much to forcibly exclude it.

At the time of this posting, this 6pc set is just under $19.

With this set, you get spend a little more than on less expensive assortments, but the grippy diamond grit-coated tips and comfortable handles are worth the added expense.

You also don’t get anything extra you might not need, which means more money goes into the tools you might use more frequently.

20 screwdrivers for $25 seems like a good value, until you realize that just 6 will cover at least 95% of your fastening tasks. If you come across screw styles or sizes that a 6pc screwdriver set cannot handle, you’ll need something else. But will that 20pc set include that “something else,” or will you have to spend more money anyway?

Husky has plenty of other screwdriver set options, many of which I’ve purchased or received for testing, and I’ve had good experiences.

These are far from being my favorite screwdrivers, but they’re good quality and the set offers a great value within its price range.

If You Need More Tip Styles and Sizes

Perhaps consider a good 1/4″ hex bit handle and an assortment of insert bits.

That’s beyond the scope of this post, but I’ll include a single recommendation to get you started in the right direction:

    Additional Discussion

If you want the most bang for your buck, Kobalt and Husky have very competitive options for $20 or less – get whichever. Will they be long-lasting high-precision professional-grade tools? Not really, but they’re as good or better than what you can expect for $20.

And if you’re not happy, take it back to the store within your return period, get your money back, increase your budget by a few dollars, and try something else.

So, that said, I’d recommend the Husky set, the Stanley 4-in-1 “pen driver”, and then maybe consider putting a few dollars towards a magnetizer (via Amazon). Add an offset screwdriver (via Amazon) to your shopping list after the first time you really wish you had one.

The Craftsman set though… $25 seems okay for what you get – but certainly not $35. Although, I’m not very impressed with what you get. It’s a standard 6pc screwdriver with 6 more “a little of this and that” tools to help convince DIYer to spend more.

If I sound a bit cranky about this, it’s because I have fallen for such tool sets before. These days, I’d rather spend $20 on 6 tools I need, rather than 6 I need and 6 minor tools or accessories I might someday need.

Also, those-add-on tools will often be duplicated when – not if – you need to buy additional tools down the line.

2 mini screwdrivers or 1 offset screwdriver isn’t enough. When it’s time to buy more sizes, a set will likely be most economical, and then you’re basically spending money on duplicate sizing or functionality.

This happens with a lot of assortments. For instance, when you start working a lot with Torx fasteners, will the 2 sizes included in the Kobalt set be enough? Probably not, and so you’ll eventually need a separate Torx set.

Although, there is benefit in having a tool-at-hand before you know you need it.

Still, this is why I like the Husky and other 6pc sets. You can easily add to them without necessarily duplicating the functionality of what you have.

Coming back to the Wera set – that 6pc set cost nearly double as much as the Husky, but the quality is fantastic, especially the anti-cam-out tips. Most people love the handle shape, but some people don’t – so make sure to try them within your chosen retailer’s return period.

    What About Multi-Bit Screwdrivers?

Some of might be thinking that an all-in-one multi-bit screwdriver might be a better choice.

    Yes, and no.

I keep both around. Multi-bit screwdrivers are convenient, standalone screwdrivers are often more comfortable and can better fit within recessed handles.

Additionally, more complex projects might require multiple screwdriver sizes. It’s easier to pick up different drivers than to change a multi-bit driver’s configuration back and forth.

    Wiha 6-in-1 Multi-Bit Screwdriver

Wiha Made in USA Multi-Bit Screwdrivers

I’m not so excited about Wiha tools anymore, but their multi-bit screwdrivers are solid recommendations. I bought these for review last year and continue to use them regularly with good experiences.

The 6-in-1 is just $13 right now, which seems like a good bargain. I paid $16 for mine in January 2021.

    Tekton 6-in-1 Multi-Bit Screwdriver

    Tekton Multi-Bit Screwdriver in Black

    I also like Tekton’s 6-in-1 multi-bit screwdrivers, priced at just $10 each.

It’s available with black or red handles, and you can choose from a couple of different bit configurations aside from the usual Phillips and slotted loadouts.

Candidly speaking, there is no shortage of multi-bit screwdrivers in the $8 to $20 price range.

Although it’s in need of an update, I have some other recommendations here, and I would also recommend the Klein 11-in-1 (via Amazon).

These would all be in addition to – and not instead of – a 6pc or greater screwdriver set.

    What Do You Recommend?

I tried to exclude Husky at first, given the potential conflict of interest (I try my best to avoid making comparisons between sponsor and non-sponsor brands in any circumstances), but it’s my top sub-$20 choice with no reasonable second choices quickly coming to mind.

Irwin, another Stanley Black & Decker brand, used to have some great screwdrivers, but I can’t find them at decent prices today.

Gearwrench also makes great screwdrivers, but their pricing is beyond the scope of this post.

There’s also Felo Ergonic, if you can catch them on sale.

What would you recommend? I’m curious to see what readers’ thoughts are, but please keep the relative price range of $15 to $25 in mind.

Milwaukee Tool launched their M4 cordless screwdriver in 2012, nearly 10 years ago. This is still an active product that’s listed on Milwaukee website, and it’s in-stock at retailers and suppliers.

What’s interesting is that this remains the only tool on Milwaukee’s M4 platform.

When the M4 screwdriver first launched, I believed that M4 would be a system. But, that didn’t happen.

    I also wrote:

What do you think will come out with next? We’re thinking an LED worklight is most probable.

There weren’t any M4 worklights, but Milwaukee did launch RedLithium USB years later, with the new battery powering an entire line of LED worklights, flashlights, and personal lighting accessories.

There are some RedLithium USB tools and accessories as well, such as digital levels and green laser levels, but still no cordless screwdriver.

Ryobi now has a line of USB Lithium cordless power tools, including a screwdriver. But for whatever reason, Milwaukee isn’t there yet.

Frankly, I don’t blame them – there have been several 3.6V/4V Max cordless power tool systems, and things didn’t work out well.

Ryobi had a Tek4 line that was around for several years. Back in 2011, Sears launched a line of Craftsman V4 compact cordless power tools, and it didn’t even last 2 months. The tools launched in October and were on clearance by December.

Milwaukee launched the M4 cordless screwdriver for users who need to quickly perform the same tasks hundreds of times a day. This explains why I’ve seen it promoted in industrial supplier catalogs.

It’s a feature-rich tool too, with 44 in-lbs max torque, two speeds (200 and 600 RPM), and a 21-position adjustable torque clutch. The M4 charger is a standard benchtop-type unit, allowing for quick swapping and near-continued tool use.

I can see why the M4 might be preferred in certain work environments over a RedLithium USB model.

But still, the M4 must sell well to still be available 10 years later, right? Or maybe not, sometimes such assumptions are logical but unfounded.

Could a RedLithium USB screwdriver and battery charging dock replace the M4 model?

I posted about the prospect for a RedLithiu, USB cordless screwdriver nearly 4 years ago. We’re going to see new RedLithium USB products soon, as Milwaukee will be shifting over to USB-C in 2023. But what about more non-lighting tools?

There are reasons behind every tool omission.

Does anyone here use and Dewalt 8V Max cordless power tools? There are reasons why Dewalt hasn’t expanded their 8V Max lineup in 9 years.

And so, while I’m surprised and maybe a little disappointed that we haven’t seen a RedLithium USB cordless screwdriver yet, maybe it’s for the best.

Milwaukee first launched RedLithium USB 5 years ago, starting with personal lighting products. Personal lighting seems to remain their focus.

Given this length of time, either Milwaukee is working on a RedLithium USB cordless screwdriver and is simply waiting for opportune circumstances, or they’ve decided against it for whatever reasons.

It remains a possibility, with my question being when or why not?

If you want a 4V-class cordless screwdriver from Milwaukee, there’s still the M4.

Lowe’s has a new Kobalt cordless screwdriver, and if I had to guess, I’d say this is destined to be a featured promo for the winter holiday or Black Friday 2022 shopping season.

From what we can see so far, the new Kobalt 4V cordless screwdriver actually has some nice features.

To start off, it looks to have a compact size and measures 5-1/2″ long. Although online images can be deceiving, we can try to go by the 1/4″ screwdriver bit holder for scale.

This Kobalt looks much smaller than the Craftsman Gyro screwdriver. I purchased the Craftsman a while back, but very rarely use due it to its larger size – among other reasons.

Kobalt 4V Cordless Screwdriver Side and End Cap

The Kobalt cordless screwdriver has a built-in rechargeable battery, which I know some tool users really don’t like, but that’s typical for simple power tools like this one.

    It recharges via USB-C.

Lowe’s says the screwdriver comes with a type-C cable, but there’s no charger listed. They don’t specify if the included cable has USB-C connections on both ends, or USB-C and USB-A plugs to fit older-style charging adapters.

The Kobalt cordless screwdriver also has a ring-style LED light at the front, and simple direction selection buttons on the side.

According to the on-tool label as seen in product images, the screwdriver operates at 280 RPM, and its battery has a 1.5Ah charge capacity.

Kobalt and Lowe’s have not yet provided torque specs, but 3.6V and 4V Max cordless screwdrivers typically deliver up to around 40 in-lbs of max torque.

It will come bundled with a bit extension, (20) 1/4″ hex-shank insert screwdriver bits (1″ length), and a charging cable (but presumably no charger).

    Details are subject to change.

    Price: $25

    Discussion

Frankly, this looks like something I’d be inclined to use, and the $25 price seems reasonable for what you get.

My only criticism is that every good cordless screwdriver needs a flashy name. This is the Kobalt 68686, which doesn’t sound very exciting, although I like that it’s a palindrome.

    Can’t Wait?

Skil Cordless Screwdriver with Circuit Sensor Technology

The Skil 4V Circuit Sensor cordless screwdriver is also $25.

Tekton has a new portable screwdriver bit set, model DBH93101, which comes with their high torque bit handle, 36 insert bits, and a convenient carrying case.

At first glance, this looks like a decent set, and its $29 price seems reasonable.

Tekton Potable Bit Screwdriver Set 37pc Components

The set comes with Tekton’s high torque screwdriver handle, which has a tri-lobe geometry. Tekton says the handle enables users to generate high torque, and there’s a rounded section at the front and back ends for faster spinning.

In my experience, these Tekton screwdriver handles look a bit funky but are quite comfortable to use.

The screwdriver handle fits 1/4″ hex-shank insert bits, and is magnetic. Tekton says the magnetic bit receiver is friction-fit within the receiver and can’t fall out.

I’ve had glued-in magnet inserts fall out of screwdriver handles and bit holders before, and so Tekton explicitly saying theirs is friction-fit is a good selling point.

Tekton Potable Bit Screwdriver Set 37pc Closed Case

The case features a durable 3-layer exterior material, molded foam recesses for the screwdriver and bit holders, and zippered closure.

    The case measures 9.6″ long x 3.3″ wide x 2.0″ tall.

Tekton Potable Bit Screwdriver Set Rubberized Bit Holder

The set comes with rubberized bit rails, which are flexible and secure, but also allow for one-handed bit removal.

The bit storage holders also have their own size markings.

Tekton Potable Bit Screwdriver Set Corrosion Resistance

Tekton says that the S2 steel bits, with zinc-phosphate coating, are corrosion-resistant.

I typically only have rust problems with the cheapest screwdriver bits, but it’s easy to take such a feature for granted.

Tekton Potable Bit Screwdriver Set Larger Bit Size Marking

Tekton shows off their screwdriver bits’ large and clear size markings. These markings are stamped onto every bit, as opposed to being etched.

Tekton Potable Bit Screwdriver Set Extended Length

Lastly, the included bits are 30mm long, rather than the standard 25mm, which Tekton says improves access to recessed fasteners.

    Included Screwdriver Bits:

    • Phillips: #1, #2, #3
    • Slotted: 3/16, 1/4, 5/16 inch
    • Square: S1, S2, S3
    • SAE Hex: 5/64, 3/32, 7/64, 1/8, 9/64, 5/32, 3/16, 7/32, 1/4 inch
    • Metric Hex: 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5, 5, 5.5, 6 mm
    • Star: T7, T8, T9, T10, T15, T20, T25, T27, T30
Tekton Potable Bit Screwdriver Set Handle

The handle is resistant to extreme temperatures, gas, fuels, oils, grease, cleaners, and solvents. Tekton says the overmolded grip won’t degrade or become sticky over time.

Country of Origin: The handle is molded in the USA, and the bits, rails, and driver blade are made in Taiwan.

    Model: DBH93101
    Price: $29

    Discussion

At the least, this looks to be a very portable-looking bit screwdriver set.

And, going through the details, there are a lot of small features that build up its appeal.

There’s not one singular factor that gives me a “this is the kit for me” kind of vibe, but everything together? – I’m sold.

I asked Tekton for a test sample, and will report back after I give the tools a whirl. I’m most curious about the extended length insert screwdriver bits, and if they make a difference.

There are a lot of times when bits are just a little too short, and screwdriver handle shanks just a little too wide for bit drivers to work.

I’m also curious about the rubberized bit rails, although I’m wondering if it would be better if they did not have size markings. I suppose that, if one ever swaps out screwdriver bits, they can always cover up the markings with tape or a Sharpie.

While a little higher priced than more basic screwdriver bit sets, this Tekton 37pc set looks to be more thoughtfully designed. It also has a lot of what I need, and little that I don’t.

Lionsteel, a European knifemaker, recently announced the EGGIE, a multi-tool that can be carried in your pocket or on a keyring.

The Lionsteel Eggie multi-tool, a collaboration between the knifemaker and “Audacious Concept Design,” is made out of titanium and is fitted with 6 tools and screwdriver bits, plus a magnetic bit holder at the center.

Lionsteel Eggie EDC Screwdriver Bit Storage

The top cover unscrews to reveal the built-in bit storage slots.

    Lionsteel Eggie Knife Blade

Unsurprisingly, given Lionsteel’s core competencies, the tool comes with a small knife blade.

Lionsteel Eggie Multi-Tool in Blue with Bits

The bit loadout includes the knife blade, a slotted screwdriver bit, four sizes of Torx driver bits, and a tungsten carbide tip.

The slotted screwdriver bit is double-ended, sharing its opposite end with a Torx bit tip. So, in total there are two tools (knife, carbide-tipped point), and five screwdriver bit styles and sizes, plus the fixed bit holder.

Lionsteel says that the bits are made from stainless steel.

The included bits look to have a proprietary design, but hopefully the hex bit holder can accommodate industry-standard screwdriver bits and accessories. Lionsteel has not been clear on this.

    Lionsteel Eggie Multi-Tool Color Options

There will be 3 color options – blue, grey, and bronze – presumably all anodized titanium. Each comes with a small titanium carabiner and what looks to be a keyring swivel.

    Lionsteel Eggie Specs

    • 1.93″ (49 mm) length
    • 0.96″ (24.4 mm) diameter
    • Weighs 2.42 oz (69 g)
    • Materials: titanium (holder/handle), A-420 steel (bits/inserts)

Pricing and availability information is not available yet.

    Discussion

Torx screwdriver bit tips are common when talking about knifemaker pocket tools and multi-tools, but what about the slotted screwdriver? I assume the carbide tip is intended for emergency glass-breaking applications, and the knife blade is self-explanatory.

The egg-shaped handle looks to be compact, and with a nearly 1-inch diameter, it’s about the same size as many finger-grip screwdrivers.

This looks to be an interesting multi-tool. I’m not completely sold on the aesthetics, but I’m also not turned away by it.

I would expect for Lionsteel to make this in Italy, where they are headquartered.

Seeing as the main part of the tool and carabiner clip are made from anodized titanium, and the bits are all custom-designed and machined from stainless steel, expect a premium price.

At the time of this posting, this Gearwrench 13pc AutoBite pliers and Bolt Biter tool set (81002) is on sale for $69.20 at Amazon.

Update 4/12/22: 9:30am The price has now dropped to $49.99 at Amazon and Acme Tools.

Update 4/12/22 11:10am: The price is now back to $69.20 at Amazon, and Acme Tools sold out again.

I ordered a set at the end of October for $90. I ordered another set last month to send to a reader as a giveaway bonus, and I thought $80 was a great deal. Now, at just under $70, it’s a fantastic bargain.

    Here’s what you get:

From what I found, the tools would cost ~$142 if purchased separately.

I purchased a set for myself for several reasons. 1) I really like Gearwrench’s 90T cushion-grip ratchets and wanted another, 2) I really like the AutoBite style of pliers and wanted more sizes, 3) I wanted to try the extraction screwdrivers, 4) Gearwrench was a sponsor and I wanted to explore some of their newer products.

In my experience, the Bolt Biter sockets are decent, but that was more of a bonus “good to have” part of this assortment. I tend to more often encounter rounded and stripped screws, machine screws, and socket cap screws than I do hex-head bolts and the like.

Back in late October, when the set dipped down from its $99 holiday season price, I thought that the $90 price I saw was good for what I wanted out of the set.

I had not posted about this set earlier, as I could not find the right words. This seems intended to be a fastener extraction tool set, but I see it more as misc. “try me” assortment that introduces users to a varied selection of Gearwrench tools.

I’m unlikely to make heavy use of the extraction sockets, but the other tools have already found a home in my kit.

Now at its $69.20 price, this assortment is an even better buy.

Should you buy it? Figure out which tools you might want, check out the street pricing on those components (I included links above for price comparisons), and judge its value.

So far, I’ve got zero regrets.

If I had to guess, I’d say that Amazon slashed the price to help move remnant holiday season inventory, but there’s no way to know for certain.

    Vessel-Made Craftsman Ball Grip Screwdriver

One of my first introductions to Vessel tools came 7 years ago, when they collaborated with Sears to launch Craftsman-branded ball grip screwdrivers. I have purchased a couple of additional Vessel ball grip screwdrivers since then, with each experience adding to my positive opinion of the brand.

    Engineer Inc Bit Pit
    Engineer-Brand Bit Carrier

Engineer, another Japanese tool brand, introduced me to the concept of keychain bit carriers.

These bit carriers, available from a variety of Japanese tool brands, provide a convenient way to store power-style screwdriver bits while also keeping them easily accessible.

    Vessel-Ball-Grip-Bit-Holder-Red

Combining the two concepts, here’s the Vessel Ball Grip “carrying bit holder.”

I bought a couple of these from Amazon Japan, and it is now also available in the USA.

These Vessel Ball Grip bit holders are very different from the ones I have purchased and used from other brands. While other brands’ bit carrier keychains can only be used as bit holders, the Vessel Ball Grip can also be used as a screwdriver handle.

In other words, this is also a keychain-sized stubby screwdriver handle that works with standard 1/4″ hex power-style screwdriver bits.

So, you can use this as a stubby bit screwdriver handle, as a storage accessory, or both.

    Vessel-Ball-Grip-Bit-Holder-Example-Uses

The idea of bit carriers has grown on me over the years, but being able to use them as screwdriver handles delivers next-level functionality.

This is a great product for general use, and also for minimalist EDC tool kits when you want a compact and customizable screwdriver.

I bought Vessel’s Japanese-version Ball Grip bit carriers, and they seem to work equally as well with US and EU power-style bits as they do with Japanese power-style bits, which have slightly longer shanks.

Press the spring-action plunger, the part the keyring passes through, to disengage the lock and remove screwdriver bits.

As the Japanese-style version works perfectly (in my experience) with US, EU, and Japan brands and styles of bits, it’s likely the English-language packaging card is the only difference between US and international model numbers.

    Price: $10
    Model: QB-22RU (USA), QB-22R (Japan)

Keep in mind that this is intended for use with 1/4″ hex power-style bits. I have found that it will also work with my 4″ insert-style bits, but I don’t have a wide variety of brands to test it with. Do NOT use this with short insert bits, they’ll get stuck.

The red version is available in the USA. If ordering from Amazon Japan (more on that here), there are a couple of other color choices.

I recently came across a new Husky screwdriver at Home Depot, and it immediately called to mind similar “Double Drive” screwdrivers that continue to be sold at Lowe’s under Kobalt branding.

Home Depot describes the new Husky tool as a continuous drive ratcheting screwdriver on its packaging, and as a ratcheting Double Speed screwdriver online.

The description isn’t important, but I am mentioning this in case you go looking for the screwdriver online at a later time (I also have a link at the end of this post). As the descriptions are different, this screwdriver won’t show up in a web search for “Husky continuous drive screwdriver.” But I digress.

Husky Double Drive Screwdriver Home Depot Display Closeup

The main thing about this screwdriver is that, as it says on the packaging, it can drive your fasteners 2X faster than with traditional ratcheting screwdrivers.

With a ratcheting screwdriver, the reverse motion can be considered as wasted energy. You turn a fastener with one turn of a ratcheting screwdriver, and reset its gearing position by rotating the handle in the opposite direction.

But with this Husky screwdriver, a reverse motion will also serve to drive a fastener in the desired direction. Thanks to this process, you can turn a fastener in the desired direction no matter which direction you rotate your handle. Toggle the direction switch and you can get dual-action torque transmission in the opposite direction instead.

What’s the catch? You need two hands to activate this special 2X speed mode. You use one hand to turn the screwdriver handle, and the other to hold the special gear collar in a fixed position. You’ll find the collar towards the front of the handle.

    Husky Double Drive Screwdriver

Husky looks to offer a lot with their version of the Double Drive screwdriver, such as built-in bit storage and two shaft sizes.

Unfortunately, the handle can only accommodate one of the bit cartridges, although that’s better than not offering bit storage. The handle looks and feels surprisingly compact, which is why I think it’s a plus to offer bit storage at all, rather than a minus that it cannot accommodate all three.

The driver comes with (15) 1/4″ hex screwdriver bits.

I have had mixed feelings for this style of screwdriver over the years, but it has its merits. And, based on the last couple of similarly-designed screwdrivers I tested, the driver should still be useful even if you can only hold it with one hand.

When operated with one hand and without holding onto the gear collar, similar screwdrivers behaved in a way comparable to that of traditional ratcheting screwdrivers.

My local Home Depot stores are reporting anywhere from 3 to 92 units in stock.

At the time of this posting, online ordering is disabled unless you opt for “scheduled delivery,” which involves courier-style delivery straight from your local store for a free ($8.99 for my area).

If you’re interested in the screwdriver’s 2X driving speed functionality, its $10 price tag seems reasonable. If your Home Depot still has these in stock, you can the Husky screwdriver display at the holiday tool deals and gifts center.

    Price: $9.88
