Lowe’s stores have started to put most of their Ideal electrical hand tools on clearance, presumably to make room for Klein tools.

As we reported earlier this year, Klein Tools are coming to Lowe’s, following 14 years of exclusivity at Home Depot.

When the announcement was made, it was said that Lowe’s stores would start selling Klein products in the second half of 2023, which we are now in.

None of the Lowe’s stores near me had any Klein tools on the shelves or pegs. I also checked overhead but didn’t see any Klein-branded boxes.

Lowes Clearancing Ideal Pliers 2023

Lowe’s is labeling the tools as being a special value for a limited time, but that’s likely just a euphemism for the tools being on clearance.

I don’t see how there could be room for both Klein and Ideal electrical tools, but maybe there will be some intermingling. Time will tell.

As of the time of this posting, it looks like the deals are only available in-store, but this could change.

In other news, Home Depot is clearing out Klein tools but have not yet announced which tool brand or brands will take their place.

Home Depot stores appear to be dumping Klein Tools, and have put nearly all of their Klein electrical tools and accessories on clearance.

There are some great deals to be found, and some of the pegs at my local Home Depot have already been sold-through.

The discounts have only appeared at my local stores. Business is usual on Home Depot’s website, with no Klein tools or products clearanced-priced there yet.

Klein Tools Clearance at Home Depot 2023 - Test Meters

My local Home Depot store has discounted most but not all of their Klein tools yet.

Select hand tools and multimeters have not yet been given sale prices or clearance tags.

Klein Tools Clearance at Home Depot 2023 - Insulated Hand Tools

All kinds of Klein tools are included in the clear-out, such as screwdrivers, pliers, insulated hand tools, wire strippers, general purpose tools – such a combination square – and specialty electrical tools.

It’s uncertain if any Klein Tools will remain in Home Depot stores, or which brands’ tools will replace them.

We knew that this might be coming.

Lowe’s and Klein Tools announced a new partnership earlier this year, and said that Klein products will be sold at Lowe’s stores and online starting in the second half of 2023, which we’re now in.

This effectively marked the end of Klein’s exclusivity arrangement with Home Depot, which was announced 14 years ago.

Home Depot has not made any announcements about Klein Tool’s exit, but yellow clearance stickers and empty tool pegs speak volumes.

Helping a Reader Find a Better Automatic Wire Stripper https://toolguyd.com/helping-reader-find-better-automatic-wire-stripper/ https://toolguyd.com/helping-reader-find-better-automatic-wire-stripper/#comments Thu, 13 Jul 2023 12:00:00 +0000 https://toolguyd.com/?p=107383 Phoenix Contact Wirefox 4 Automatic Wire StripperThis was a tough but interesting search.]]> Phoenix Contact Wirefox 4 Automatic Wire Stripper

A reader asked for help finding a new automatic wire stripper. That sounds easy, right? Not quite.

Here’s the tricky part – While I’m familiar with many brands and styles of automatic wire strippers, I can’t say I’ve ever swapped parts on one.

Here’s what they wrote:

Hi, I have a Phoenix Contact Wirefox 6sc automatic wire stripper. After years of faithful service, it broke and I’m looking at a replacement. The PC tools aren’t the easiest to get here in the US and was looking for something easier to source and get blades for. What would you suggest?

Phoenix Contact Wirefox 6SC Automatic Wire Stripper

Here’s the Phoenix Contact Wirefox 6SC. Note the two-part handle grips, the removable cutter module, and the shape of the wire cutting loop below the lower jaw. This will be important later.

The reader said “After years of faithful service, it broke,” which is good, but they want a model that has more easily available replacement blades.

Knipex Automatic Wire Stripper 1262180

My first thought was to look at Knipex. I have these automatic wire strippers, and they’re quite good for many types of wire.

Knipex Automatic Wire Stripper 1252195

They have another style that’s a bit pricier.

Jokari Automatic Wire Strippers

I also looked at Jokari, which I believe to be the OEM for some of Knipex’s wire strippers.

Certain Knipex and Jokari automatic wire strippers have replacement parts, but they don’t seem to be widely available.

At this point I should point out that the Phoenix Contact 6SC wire stripper is not a casual use tool. In other words, off-the-shelf wire strippers from the home center, such as by Irwin or Klein Tools, probably won’t work well for the user that wrote in.

Phoenix Contact specializes in industrial wiring components and accessories. When installing these products, such as in control panels and such, you need high repeatability and accuracy.

And, as I learned from this request, some users need replaceable parts to extend the longevity of their tools.

That makes sense. If a control panel requires hundreds of connections, a good wire stripper is necessary and will see heavy use of time.

McMaster Carr Automatic Wire Stripper

What about this model from McMaster Carr? It retails for around $76 and replacement blades are available for a little over $23. But… it seems only one style of replacement blade cartridge is available, and it doesn’t quite match the style of the Wirefox 6SC.

Weidmuller Stripax Wire Stripper

I’ve heard good things about Weidmuller Stripax wire strippers, but am not yet familiar with the brand, and aren’t sure how widely available replacement parts would be.

Automation Direct Wire Stripper

What about this one from Automation Direct? It retails for $63, and there are a couple of different styles of replacement blade assemblies you can buy.

The direct replacement, for 34-8 AWG, is $24.50, and a similar blade as the Wirefox 6SC is $31.

Hold on…

Phoenix Contact vs Automation Direct Wire Strippers

Are these the same tool?

The McMaster and Automation Direct tools are both listed as being made in Sweden.

Xcelite Wire Stripper

Here’s an Xcelite version, which is available at Amazon.

Pressmaster Embla SBC Wire Stripper

Digging deeper, I came across the Pressmaster Embla SBC. There’s also the VBC, which has V-blades as standard.

Pressmaster looks to be the OEM, which would mean they manufacturer tools for Phoenix Contact, Automation Direct, and probably others.

The Embla looks to be available with 3 styles of replacement knives.

Assuming all of the tools are the same but with different labeling, that would suggest that the reader can keep his Wirefox tool and simply load it with compatible replacement knife blades wherever they can find them.

The V-blade cassette has part number 4320-0615, and looks identical to the ones sold by Automation Direct and Phoenix for their respective tools.

Here’s where I hit a snag. Phoenix Contact’s images are swapped for a lot of products.

Phoenix Contact SC Replacement Blade

I can easily find straight and V-blade cartridges for the Pressmaster Embla. However, the Wirefox 6SC looks to have a different blade set, suited for “cables and conductors (especially for cables protected against short circuits and ground leakages) 1.5-6mm².”

I can’t find alternate sources for this SC 1.5-6mm² blade set.

Here are all of the replacement blades for the Pressmaster Embla:

  • 4320-0614 – Straight Blades, 0.02-10mm² (34-8 AWG)
  • 4320-0615 – V-Blades, 0.1-4mm² (28-12 AWG)
  • 4320-0669 – Semicircular Blades, 4-16mm² (10-5 AWG)

It seems that maybe the SC are special shielded cable jaws. I can’t find these anywhere else, and unless it’s simply well-hidden, that could suggest that they’re specially-made for Phoenix Contact, which would explain their high price and limited availability.

Phoenix Contact Wire Stripper Replacement V-Blades

Hmm. This is a closeup of the V-blades with 0.1-4mm² wire stripping capacity.

Phoenox Contact Wire Stripper SC and V-Blades

Assuming these product images are accurate, is there truly a difference?

Or is it rated for “cables protected against short circuits and ground leakages” up to 6mm² (~10 AWG) or PTFE-insulated wires up to 4mm² (12 AWG)?

So either the SC blades are blade specially for Phoenix Contact, and the likely OEM doesn’t sell it anywhere else I could find, or they’re labeled so as to match suitability to a specialized wire type.

The images could inaccurately give the impression the two products are identical aside from their markings, but that seems less probable.

The Pressmaster Embla fits the readers’ requirement of an automatic wire stripper that’s easier to source with also-easily-sourced replacement blades. The SC blade part, however, is the only part I’m not 100% convinced on.

That all said, is there a different model wire stripper you might recommend?

It – in any of its forms – looks decent. I have found that some models work well for thinner wires, other for thicker, and that different insulation types can really throw performance and repeatability way off. I’ll pick one up for review, and maybe one or two others based on readers’ suggestions.

I Bought an Epson Handheld Label Maker https://toolguyd.com/epson-handheld-label-maker/ https://toolguyd.com/epson-handheld-label-maker/#comments Tue, 23 May 2023 14:57:33 +0000 https://toolguyd.com/?p=105689 Epson Label Maker Showing Marked CablesWhat's your take on handheld label printers?]]> Epson Label Maker Showing Marked Cables

I have a label printer – a USB-connected device that prints out large labels for tool boxes, organizers, and other such things. I bought my Brother QL-700 10 years ago, and it has served me reasonably well since then. But, my needs have changed.

At the time, I didn’t like the limitations of handheld label printers, or the smaller labeling capabilities of the models I was looking at.

But now, I need a versatile handheld printer.

Epson Industrial Label Makers

After sorting through a couple of different options by Dymo, I found Epson’s PX series of handheld Labelworks label printers.

The Epson handheld label makers look to check off a lot of boxes for me, and offer added features and capabilities that further sold me on the brand’s models.

I was originally looking for a heatshrink printer, and this can do it. From their marketing materials, Epson has a wider range of sizes and colors than other brands.

It can also print to a range of label sizes. I have organizers with hundreds of removable bins. In some of those, only a slip of paper inside gives indication as to the contents. Being able to add 1/4″ labels seems convenient.

And, it can also print to self-laminating strips, where there’s black-on-white text and a clear wrapper that allows for easy cable identification. This avoids the need for pricier large-size heatshrink labels that can go over bulky pre-terminated end connectors.

I’m sold on the idea. I placed my order today, but wanted to see what you guys think about this type of product.

Epson also offers Bluetooth-connected and semi-stationary models, but I started to see the benefits in having a handheld unit.

There are two industrial models with built-in keyboards, and they both look to have similar graphics and symbols libraries. There’s the LW-PX700, and the LW-PX900. The main difference, from what I can tell, is that the PX900 can print to higher DPI and can work with a wider range of labels – up to 1.5″ as opposed to 1″ for the PX700.

Each model has two options – just the label maker with an AC adapter and starter label cartridge, or a “full kit” that adds in a rechargeable battery and carrying case.

Pricing

  • LW-PX700 – $129
  • LW-PX700PCD Kit – $205
  • LW-PX900 – $319
  • LW-PX900PCD Kit – $399

At the time of this posting, Amazon has a $50 coupon on the “lite” kit version, bringing that price down to $269.

One of the things that helped me almost immediately dismiss other brands is Epson’s attention to customer education.

What are the differences between PX700 and PX900 models? There’s a video for that:

What exactly is self-laminating tape?

Epson PX Self-Laminating Tape

They show this clearly in a product brochure page on the Epson website.

There are other features I found appealing, such as the ability to self-rewind labels to help eliminate blank margin space.

It looks like the newer PX700 can save up to 5 image files to the device, but the PX900 can’t do that.

I went with the PX900 for its higher DPI printing and larger size printing capabilities. If ToolGuyd wasn’t footing the bill, the PX700 is much more attractively priced.

A label printer isn’t necessary – I’ve been using masking tape, taped-over paper, and small slips of paper for years. But for me, this looks like a problem-solver and a way to eliminate common frustrations.

If all goes well, I’ll be using it maybe 40% for parts bins, bags, and drawers, 40% for project wiring and cables, and 20% for misc workshop and supply labeling needs.

Dymo Industrial Label Printers

Prior to learning about the Epson printers, I had been considering the Dymo Rhino 4200 (~$67-$80) and 5200 (~$133-$155) models.

For personal use, the Dymo 4200 seems like it would have been a good fit. It has a QWERTY keyboard, unlike the 5200, and is reasonably priced at just under $67 at the time of this posting. The Rhino 4200 is limited to 3/4″ max label width.

A lot of little things pushed me from the Dymo to the Epson, such as the Epson’s automatic cutter, greater heat shrink tubing color options, printing speed, and PC software option. Once I thought about how much manual labeling I do, and how labeling will be required for an upcoming project, the added expense seemed justified.

Leviton’s “Future of Wiring” Outlets and Switches have Wago-like Levers https://toolguyd.com/leviton-decora-edge-electrical-outlets-switches/ https://toolguyd.com/leviton-decora-edge-electrical-outlets-switches/#comments Thu, 20 Apr 2023 00:36:09 +0000 https://toolguyd.com/?p=104527 Leviton Decora Edge Switches and Outlets Features HeroNew Leviton devices have Wago-like levers.]]> Leviton Decora Edge Switches and Outlets Features Hero

Home Depot has started advertising new Leviton Decora Edge electrical outlets and switches, which feature a Wago-like lever-locking mechanism for installing wires.

Leviton claims that, with Decora Edge, wiring electrical devices can be as simple as Push. Click. Done., and that this is “the future of wiring.”

There are no screw terminals, and no need to loop wires.

Leviton Decora Edge Outlets and Switches Hero

Leviton Decora Edge is said to be faster, easier, and safer.

At launch, it seems there are 3 types of devices – tamper-resistant 15A outlets, a rocker switch, and a 3-way rocker switch.

Leviton Decora Edge Outlets and Switches Color Coded Levers

The levers are color-coded – black for hot, white for neutral, green for ground, and red for the traveler terminal of 3-way switches.

Leviton Decora Edge Outlets and Switches Push and Click Wiring Steps

If you have ever used Wago Lever-Nuts, you’ll be familiar with the installation process.

Leviton Decora Edge Outlets and Switches Testing Point

There are testing points in the rear, for use with multimeter probes and circuit testers.

Leviton Decora Edge Switches and Outlets Internal Spring Connection

Here’s a peek at the internal connection point. The lever makes an audible click when properly seated.

Leviton Decora Edge Switch in Electrical Box over Drywall Hole

Leviton says that the size of the Decora Edge has a longer and wider strap, which aids installation in “oddly cut” drywall.

Leviton Decora Edge Switches Connected Together

Multiple devices self-align for simplified installation, thanks to an integrated tongue and groove system.

Leviton Decora Edge Outlets and Switches Features

Leviton says that their Decora Edge devices are designed to fit Midway wall plates, and also have breakaway tabs to fit standard wall plates.

The devices are also self-grounding.

A “standard strip gauge for all devices” adds to the convenience.

Leviton Decora Edge Outlets with Lever Locks

The outlets and switches are compatible with solid and stranded 14 and 12 AWG copper wire.

Here’s pricing as of the time of this posting:

  • TR Duplex Outlet – $3.48 each (E5325-0SW), $24.99 for 10-pack (E5325-0MW)
  • Single Pole Switch – $3.28 each (E5601-0SW), $24.99 for 10-pack (E5601-0MW)
  • 3-Way Switch – $4.98 each (E5603-0SW), $37.98 each (E5603-0MW)

At this time, it doesn’t look like there are any color options other than white.

The new Decora Edge electrical devices look to be exclusively available at Home Depot, with no indication if or when they will be available elsewhere.

Additional Info

In Home Depot’s listings, a “Leviton Product Expert” says that these are residential-grade products (as opposed to spec grade), and that the outlet has a tab that can be broken off to separate the top and bottom outlets for separate feed applications.

Is this a Problem-Solver or Gimmick?

Most of the electricians I’ve spoken with or heard from passionately dislike the Quickwire and “backstab” installation methods found on Leviton and other brands’ electrical devices.

Even when a switch or receptacle features push-in connection points, they usually – if not always – also have traditional screw terminals. This gives electricians and installers some choices on how to wire things up. These outlets and switches feature the lever locking installation method exclusively.

I would presume that these devices are reusable, or at least easily removed, which should eliminate the frustrations and hassles of working with devices previously installed using Quickwire or backstab-type methods.

With no exposed metal parts, wrapping an outlet or switch with electrical tape, which some electricians practice, is no longer necessary.

Here’s the big question – are these indeed going to be faster, easier, and safer?

Is it secure? The devices are UL-listed, and so I’m sure Leviton and UL made sure of this.

Can these switches and outlets be used as replacement devices? How easily will the lever terminals accept wires that have been bent back to straight after being looped under a screw?

If you can’t get a good connection with a previously bent wire, does that mean the installer has to cut and re-strip the wire or install a pigtail?

Leviton Safer and Jobsite Claims

Leviton says that the new outlets and switches are “DIY friendly,” and that they will also save pros time on the job.

According to Leviton, this is “the future of wiring.” What do you think?

Engineer Inc, which specializes in hand tools for electronics and general purpose use, makes very decent miniature and precision pliers.

This one, PS-01 long nose pliers, are 5.5″ long and have ESD-safe anti-static handles.

In my opinion, the PS-01 mid-length long nose pliers are a good introduction to Engineer Inc pliers. If you like it, there are many more styles to choose from, such as precision cutters, non-serrated needle nose pliers, and others in between.

The jaws are fine enough to grip small and delicate electronic components enough, but also strong enough for a broader range of tasks.

It has wire cutting blades, for use on copper wire up to 2mm in diameter, and loops at the ends of the handles for a tether.

I own many styles of Engineer Inc mini pliers, and like them a lot. The jaws are well-formed and precise, the handles are comfortable, and overall their pliers perform quite well. I have had zero regrets.

Milwaukee Tool has been producing new pliers and screwdrivers in the USA, after opening their new hand tool factory in West Bend, Wisconsin several months ago.

A lot of people have been asking about when the new tools will be available. The new pliers and screwdrivers are not yet available at retailers, but should be soon.

At the start of 2023, I asked Milwaukee Tool for an update and received the following:

We received an overwhelming amount of excitement from the announcement of our new cutting pliers and screwdrivers. Our teams are working hard to deliver the most innovative and highest quality lineman’s, diagonal and long nose pliers, and screwdrivers from our new state-of-the-art production facility in West Bend, Wisconsin.

We are looking forward to getting these new hand tool solutions into the hands of our users in the middle of 2023.

Mid-2023 was the only official ETA I had been given so far.

If this estimate continues to hold true, I expect to see the first wave of new USA-made Milwaukee hand tools as early as May or June. July also counts as mid-year in my book.

Milwaukee Tool Made in USA Screwdriver Handle

Milwaukee’s new USA-made screwdrivers feature machined tips that are laser-etched for increased grip, high-strength boron-infused steel shafts for increased hardness, cushion grip handles, and clear size markings.

Milwaukee says that their new drivers deliver a “precise fit” for reduced stripping, and “ultimate durability.”

Select screwdrivers will also feature knurled shafts for precision control, and others will feature a hex-ready bolster.

Milwaukee Tool Made in USA Demo Screwdrivers

There are also 3 demo drivers, with metal hammer-ready strike caps.

All of the new USA-made pliers and screwdrivers will be backed by Milwaukee Tool’s “complete Lifetime Guarantee.”

Pricing details are not yet available.

Why are They Taking so Long?!

When we toured the new Milwaukee hand tool factory in August, 2022, production was up and running.

My understanding is that the initial rollout will require many tools, and it’s taking time to build up the necessary volume.

Milwaukee has many independent, online, and retailer tool dealers, with Home Depot the largest. According to Home Depot’s 2021 annual report, they have a little more than 2,000 stores in the USA.

Assuming Home Depot will carry Milwaukee’s new USA-made hand tools, even if not in main aisle promotional displays, the initial offering will involve many thousands of tools.

I have been in the factory, seen the manufacturing cells, and held early production samples in my hand.

The new USA-made Milwaukee hand tools are on the way.

Lowe’s and Klein Tools Announce New Partnership! https://toolguyd.com/lowes-klein-tools-partnership-2023/ https://toolguyd.com/lowes-klein-tools-partnership-2023/#comments Thu, 09 Feb 2023 17:11:19 +0000 https://toolguyd.com/?p=101797 Lowes Klein Tools Partnership 2023Wow, I did not see this coming!!]]> Lowes Klein Tools Partnership 2023

Lowe’s and Klein Tools have announced a new partnership that will “bring a significant presence for the iconic tool brand to the electrical and tool departments at Lowe’s.”

The new partnership will allow Lowe’s to “offer the widest selection of Klein Tools products anywhere in the home improvement retail channel.”

Klein Tools products will launch at Lowe’s stores and their website starting in the second half of 2023.

There will be “premium store placements across multiple product categories.”

The initial rollout will include hand tools and electrical test and measurement tools. This will be followed by a “multi-year rollout of new product innovations.”

Lowe’s executive vice president of merchandising, Bill Boltz, commented:

The addition of Klein will help drive excitement and traffic among Pro customers looking for market-tested innovation from a brand they trust.

According to press materials, the new partnership and product offerings keeps Lowe’s “true to their commitment to be a true business partner for Pros.”

Klein Tools’ President and COO, Thomas Klein Jr, adds:

This partnership with Lowe’s enables us to serve Pros with our wide array of products, including innovative new products designed to make work on the job easier, safer and more efficient.

The new partnership effectively ends Home Depot and Klein Tools’ exclusivity arrangement of more than 13-1/2 years. Home Depot has been the “sole home improvement retailer” for Klein tools since mid-2009.

Discussion

Wow, I did not see this coming!

Lowe’s and Klein announced that they are “teaming up” to bring the “widest selection of Klein Tools anywhere in the home improvement retail channel.” In other words, this means a greater selection of Klein Tools products at Lowe’s than what you can find at Home Depot. That sounds good to me!

As Home Depot lost their exclusivity, does this mean they’ll now shop around for other brands, similar to what they did with EGO? It will be interesting to see what Home Depot’s response will be – if any. From what I have seen, no other brand offers as comprehensive a selection of electrical hand tools and accessories as Klein.

Another interesting takeaway is that there will be “premium store placement across multiple product categories.” This also seems like great news for Klein and tool users alike.

Do You Use a Battery Tester? https://toolguyd.com/battery-tester/ https://toolguyd.com/battery-tester/#comments Tue, 03 Jan 2023 13:00:00 +0000 https://toolguyd.com/?p=100115 La Crosse Battery TesterIt has been decades since I've used a battery tester. What about you?]]> La Crosse Battery Tester

If I need a battery tester, I might consider this one from La Crosse. But, I don’t need a battery tester, or at least I don’t think I do.

A few weeks ago, my cousin mentioned wanting to get a battery tester for her parents, because they always have loose batteries around, and she could never tell which are good and which aren’t. Her mom was there, and disagreed, saying they don’t need a tester.

I have batteries in various places, and all but a couple are fresh and have never been used. There are times when I remove partially-depleted batteries from a device, but for the most part I don’t keep anything other than fresh batteries around.

The tester shown above can test AAA, AA, C, D, and 9V batteries. It basically checks their voltage and then moves the needle to red, yellow, or green, depending on the voltage, which is an indicator of a disposable battery’s charge status.

Testers like this are often calibrated for alkaline batteries, which have a nominal voltage of 1.5V per cell. Rechargeable NiMH batteries have a nominal voltage of 1.2V per cell.

I use Storacell battery holders ($4 and up at Amazon) when on-the-go. Fresh batteries are stored button-side up, and depleted batteries go back in button-side down until I can charge or dispose of them.

I remember using my father’s battery tester, and my grandfather had one in his kitchen utility cart.

I only recall testing maybe one sets of batteries in the past 20 years or so, and that was with a standard digital multimeter. I don’t own a battery tester; I have never bought one, and don’t plan to.

But, that’s just me.

I can see potential uses for one, such as in determining if there are issues with a device or if the batteries just need replacing. But even in those cases, a fresh set of batteries will either get things going, or they won’t, in case of a device failure.

Do you use a battery tester? Do you feel you need one?

Home Depot looks to have an exclusive new Klein Tools 7pc electrical tool set special buy, M2O41541KIT, and it looks to be a particularly good buy.

The “special buy” set comes with everything shown here and is priced at just under $100.

This looks to be like a good starter kit for apprentices, homeowners, or even general purpose use.

Klein 7pc Electrical Tool Set M2O41541KIT Components without GFCI Tester

Home Depot has a similar 6pc tool kit, 94126, which lack the GFCI tester. That kit is also priced at $99.97.

They don’t specify the exact tools you get, but it looks like the 7pc set includes the following:

Klein-Tools-RT250-Receptacle-Tester

From what I can tell, the RT250 digital GCI tester is the only difference between the 6pc and 7pc Klein tool set special buys.

By my best estimate – assuming I correctly identified all of the included tools, you get ~$151 to ~$165 in tools for just under $100.

What makes this deal even better is that they’re all great tools – not to mention the cornerstone of any electrical tool kit. There’s nothing I would substitute here, which is a rare thing to say in the context of “special buy” tool sets at Home Depot or elsewhere.

As far as I can tell, this is the same as the “6pc Apprentice Electrician Tool Set,” but with the GFCI added in without any increase in price.

Price: $99.97

Klein 6pc Electrical Tool Set 92906

For further context, consider the Klein 6pc tool set, 92906.

This set, also priced at just under $100, features less expensive wire strippers and lacks the GFCI tester.

This 6pc set is still a good bargain, but hopefully makes it clearer why I feel the 7pc bundle set deal is especially noteworthy.

With all of these and similar electrical tool sets, the more components you cannot use, the less value you get from the bundle savings. This is why I like to price out the individual tools – sometimes they’re still great buys, even if a tool or two are destined for a spares drawer or similar.

I kick-started my own Klein Tools set with a bundle set. If I recall correctly, I started with a multi-bit screwdriver, yellow-handled basic wire stripper, and lineman’s pliers.

Lastly, it’s also worth mentioning that Home Depot’s Holiday 2022 Klein Tools deal is still available, where they have a 3pc multi-bit screwdriver and bit ratchet bundle priced at $24.88.

For the past couple of years, Klein Tools has been offering special bundle deals at Home Depot for the holidays.

This year’s Klein special buy is a 3pc multi-bit screwdriver and mini ratchet set.

Klein Tools 2022 Holiday Bundle Tool Deal Contents

The bundle comes with Klein’s 1/4″ drive electrician’s mini ratchet, with 72T gearing, low-profile head, and looped handle, a 4-in-1 multi-bit electronics screwdriver, and an 8-in-1 adjustable length multi-bit stubby screwdriver.

Note: Lord Byron mentions in comments that you don’t get the 5pc bit set that typically comes with the mini ratchet; Home Depot’s product image (included above) seems to be in error.

Is this a good buy? Let’s break down what you get.

Klein 2022 Holiday Tool Deal at Home Depot

The Klein Tools bundle set is $24.88 at Home Depot, in-store and online with free shipping.

Klein’s estimation of a $39.91 value actually looks to be an understatement – the lowest I can find all three tools for is a combined $41.

Is this a good buy for you? Well, can you use any 2 of the 3 components? Then yes, you’re getting your money’s worth and more.

Should you buy it? That’s a tough one. I’m giving myself to the end of the week to convince myself why I don’t need this in my tool kit. I really like Klein’s electronic screwdrivers, but the stubby adjustable length driver and mini bit ratchet are new to me.

Even though Klein is focused on electrical tools, this looks to be a decent general purpose screwdriver tool kit.

Price: $24.88

Fluke has a new outlet tester, ST120+, and it’s priced at a reasonable $20.

The Fluke ST120+ tester is an electrical troubleshooting tool that can detect common receptacle wiring issues, such as when there’s an open ground, or the hot and neutral are reversed.

Fluke ST120 Plus Outlet Tester

It also has a GFCI test function.

As with other receptacle testers, the Fluke ST120+ has a 3 LED indicator lights, and a code legend printed on the front.

There’s one more feature – a toggleable audible alert that beeps when power is detected. Fluke says the tester will still beep when plugged into a miswired outlet. This should come in handy for identifying which circuit breaker shuts power to the outlet.

Note: This does NOT have non-contact voltage detection.

Fluke ST120 Plus Outlet Tester at Lowes

Lowe’s started carrying the Fluke tester last year, but it only recently appeared at other retailers. Lowe’s website still shows an “exclusive” label above its price, which explains why we haven’t seen it anywhere else until now.

$20 seems reasonable for what you get, especially given Fluke’s excellent reputation. The ST120+ is larger than most other outlet and GFCI testers I have seen and used, but still compact.

Price: $20

Klein Outlet Tester in Use

Shown here is an older Klein outlet tester, with the plug at one end and indicator lights at the other. This is a standard design and represents what most receptacle testers look like, although some will be missing the GFCI test button.

Fluke ST120 Plus Outlet Tester Angled View

The Fluke design, with the plug at the back and lights on the front face, is new to me, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work just as well. It also has a gentle curve behind the lights, which could help with readability from above.

If you want to spend less, there’s also the ST120, which has all of the same features except for the beeping function. The ST120 is priced at $15.

If you want to spend even less, you can find a Gardner Bender outlet tester with GFCI trigger function for under $10 at Amazon.

KC Tool is holding a “seasonal sale” right now on insulated tools, featuring a selection from Knipex, Wera, Witte, Stahwille, and Heyco.

The sale features 5 different insulated tool sets that cover a range of product categories.

A reader wrote in – thank you Robert!! – with a heads-up about the promo:

KC Tool has a 35% sale on Wera Zyklop Insulated Ratchet Set. Not a common need, but if someone needs indeed that, because of the high normal cost that’s quite a savings.

KC has some other insulated tools on sale, but that ratchet set caught my eye because I had never consider a need for insulated sockets, and the eye-watering normal price.

Here’s a list of all 5 sale items:

  • Knipex 3pc Insulated Pliers Set – $114.34 (See Note Below)
  • Wera Zyklop 3/8″ Insulated Ratchet & Socket Set – $479.99 (See Note Below)
  • Witte Pro 7pc Precision Screwdriver Set – $39.99
  • Stahlwille 6pc VDE Wrench Set
  • Heyco 7pc Screwdriver Set

If you were looking to pick up some new insulated tools, you might want to check out this sale.

Check out their deal of the day while you’re at it.

Price Check

Amazon has the Wera ratchet and socket set for quite a bit less ($375 at the time of this posting), and the same with the Knipex pliers set ($87.44 at the time of this posting) if you’re willing to order from their global store.

Amazon has higher pricing on the Witte precision screwdriver set ($56.83 at the time of this posting). I couldn’t find reliable competitive pricing for the Stahwille or Heyco sets.

Other stores might have these sets for less – it always pays to compare prices.

KC Tool has a fantastic deal right now on the Knipex forged wire stripper, model 13-72-8.

The Knipex forged wire stripper can strip solid (10-18 AWG) and stranded wire (12-20 AWG).

It also has a shear cutting blade that offers 50% higher cutting capacity, and 25% reduced cutting effort, compared to standard wire strippers.

Knipex says their strippers can cut copper and aluminum cables up to 15mm (1/2″) diameter.

It can cut 6-32 and 8-32 threaded rod and machine screws, up to class 4.6.

And, it also has multifunctional gripping surfaces for holding and twisting wires, or bending flat and round materials.

Knipex 13-72-8 Forged Wire Stripper Cutting Cable

Lastly, the strippers have what Knipex describes as location ridges, for precise positioning and faster wire stripping.

The pliers are forged from high-grade special tool steel with multi-stage hardening.

Sale Price: $39.99
Made in Germany

KC Tool has free shipping on $75+ orders.

Also check out KC Tool’s tool deal of the day.

Should You Buy These Pliers?

Forged wire strippers are a relatively new product category, and there can be a bit of sticker shock for those not familiar with them.

These are $40 on sale. Amazon has them for $54, and other retailers have them for $58 and up.

Note: This isn’t a publicly-advertised promotion, with the sale price only known once you add the pliers to your KC Tool online shopping cart. As such, I don’t know when the promo is set to end.

The way I see it, these are pliers with wire stripping capabilities. That’s where the forged construction provides benefits – you get much even more multi-functional use compared to traditional wire strippers.

And, these are much better than typical “multi-functional” or “all-in-one” electrical tools.

This particular Knipex forged stripper is very good at cutting wires as well, more so than other wire strippers I own, at least when it comes to larger multi-conductor cables.

I bought the same Knipex wire stripper from KC Tool last Black Friday/Cyber Monday at a similar price ($39), and I would absolutely buy them again.

If you want to give these electrical pliers/wire strippers a try, they’re at a great price right now. If you’re unsure, I would bet they’ll be on sale again in a few months for Black Friday or Cyber Monday 2022, but there are risks. If they will be on sale again in a few months, what will the price be, and will there be immediate availability?

Your Thoughts on Klein Hybrid Pliers Multi-Tools? https://toolguyd.com/klein-hybrid-pliers-multi-tools/ https://toolguyd.com/klein-hybrid-pliers-multi-tools/#comments Fri, 22 Apr 2022 23:40:35 +0000 https://toolguyd.com/?p=89432 Klein-Hybrid-Pliers-and-Wire-Stripper-Multi-ToolWhat do you think about these multi-purpose Klein electrical pliers?]]> Klein Hybrid Pliers and Wire Stripper and Multi-Tool

Shortly after Klein came out with hybrid-style pliers a couple of years ago, a media kit arrived on my doorstep, bundled with their hybrid-style pliers, and a similarly styled multi-tool.

I have been a little conflicted about the tools, as neither tools really align with my electrical tool needs or preferences. I kept putting things off my testing and review, because of my ambiguous feelings about the tools, and here we are, four years later.

Klein pliers are wire strippers are excellent. I own quite a few Klein tools, and greatly value their functionality and quality.

Klein-Hybrid-Pliers-and-Wire-Stripper

The Klein hybrid tool, J215-8CR, features a wide and aggressively toothed gripping tip, wire stripping holes (10-14 AWG solid, 12-16 AWG stranded), wire cutter, machine screw shears, and non-insulated crimping jaws.

This is from Klein’s Journeyman tool collection, featuring a high-leverage design and dual-material handle grips.

Klein-Hybrid-Pliers-Jaws

Klein describes this as a multi-purpose tool that saves users time and lessens their tool count.

This is intended as an all-in-one solution for wiring professionals.

Klein had previously launched heavy duty wire strippers, and these were similar in functionality. I wanted to understand the nuances, but never quite got to the bottom of it.

I bought a Klein heavy duty wire stripper ($35 at Amazon) that has a wide gripping zone, more wire stripping holes, a large wire cutter, machine screw shears, a crimper (with a different anvil shape), and “Klein Kurve” handle.

Klein says that the Journeyman tool can cut screws, nails, and most hardened wire. Perhaps this is the differentiating factor, aside from the different handle style.

I typically avoid cutting nails and hardened wire with electrical cutters or combination tools, mostly because I can never remember which are suited for it. Cutting hardened wire with cutters designed strictly for copper and soft wire is not advised, as you’ll usually damage the tool by denting, chipping, or dulling the cutting edges.

The difficulty is that I’m sure this is a great tool, but it’s one I personally don’t have organic use for. And when I do have a wiring project come up, I tend to gravitate towards personal favorites, which includes Klein’s heavy duty strippers.

I kept thinking I’ll get to it, but here we are four years later. There are reasons why I did not pass these along to a local electrician for testing and feedback, but I won’t get into that right now.

I also received Klein’s electrician’s hybrid pliers multi-tool, model 44216.

The multi-tool comes with a similar hybrid pliers head, with gripping jaws, wire stripping holes, and a wire cutter.

Klein-Hybrid-Pliers-and-Wire-Stripper-Multi-Tool-Knife-and-Screwdrivers

And, it also features a 3-inch drop point knife blade, Phillips no. 2 screwdriver, and a slotted screwdriver. There are also slide-out tweezers (shown in the topmost photo) for metal splinter removal.

The tweezers can be hard to remove, and as far as I am aware, they’re not replaceable.

The multi-tool has some good things going for it, such as the full-size Phillips screwdriver, but I never reached for it either; I left both tools in the media kit box, right near my wiring supplies.

At the time of this posting, the multi-tool is no longer available.

I would say that I’m not a fan of wire strippers centered around residential wire gauges, as I tend to work with thinner wire gauges much more frequently, and thicker wires on occasion. But, I own a Klein NM cable stripper ($27 at Amazon) and it quickly became a permanent part of my kit.

I don’t remember what I had against this style of tool to avoid it for so long, but I also know I still wouldn’t reach for either of them today. I suppose these tools are simply incompatible with my personal preferences and the types of wiring tasks I come across.

But if I use Klein heavy duty wire strippers, which aren’t so different in function, shouldn’t I find just as much utility with the Journeyman tool?

So here’s what I want to know – what appeals to you about these tools? I cannot shake the feeling that I’m wrong about the style being redundant.

The multi-tool never gained traction, which is presumably why it was discontinued.

But the Journeyman pliers? Maybe its main point is to provide a lineman’s pliers-type form factor with wire stripper functionality. Or maybe they’re heavy duty wire strippers with a lineman’s pliers-style form factor.

If you’ve tried these, what do you think about them? If you’d like to try them, chime in by 11:59pm ET 4/25/22.

The Journeyman pliers are made in the USA.

Let’s Compare 2 Klein Electrical Tester Kits https://toolguyd.com/klein-electrical-tester-kits-69355-69149p-comparison/ https://toolguyd.com/klein-electrical-tester-kits-69355-69149p-comparison/#comments Tue, 22 Mar 2022 00:37:28 +0000 https://toolguyd.com/?p=88697 Klein Testing Tool Kit 69355A reader asked how Klein's $50 tester kit compares to a $40 kit. Let's find out.]]> Klein Tools has come out with a new premium electrical test kit, and they also have a slightly less expensive bundle that costs $10 less.

The differences weren’t immediately apparent to me, and so I took a closer look at what you get with each kit.

We’ll be focusing on Klein Tools’ 69355 kit, which currently retails for $50, and their 69149P kit, which currently retails for $40. Both kits come with a digital multimeter, outlet tester, and AC voltage detector.

Klein Premium Electrical Test Kit – 69355

Klein Testing Tool Kit 69355

I included this new Klein 3pc electrical testing tool set in my tool deals roundup page, as I though it was a particularly good value for what you get.

Here’s what you get in the Klein Tools 69355 test kit:

  • Digital multimeter, MM320
  • Receptacle tester w/ GFCI test, RT250
  • Non-contact voltage tester, NCVT3P

Sum of the Parts at Retail: ~$80
Price: $50

Klein Tools Electrical Test Kit – 69149P

Klein Tools Electrical Test Kit 69149P

A reader brought up this other Klein 3pc electrical test kit, which is less expensive by $10.

Here’s what you get in the 69149P test kit:

  • Digital multimeter, MM300
  • Receptacle tester w/ GFCI test, RT105
  • Non-contact voltage tester, NCVT1P

Price: $40

Multimeters: MM320 vs MM300

This isn’t the easiest comparison, as the Klein MM320 seems to only appear in bundle kits, while the MM30 is sold by itself and as part of kits.

The two meters appear similar, but there are enough distinctions where they could be made by different OEMs.

Looking at the user manuals, the differences are extremely slight.

The MM320 seems to have slightly better accuracy in several measurement types and ranges, compared to the MM300.

The MM320 has auto power-off (APO), the MM300 does not.

These are both basic manual-ranging digital multimeters. From what I can tell, the MM300 is basic, and the MM320 is slightly better.

Receptacle Testers: RT250 vs. RT105

Klein-Tools-RT250-Receptacle-Tester

The Klein RT250 outlet tester, shown above, has GFCI test functionality, indicator LEDs, and an LCD display.

The RT105 only seems to be sold as part of electrical test kits. It looks to be a basic receptacle tester and does not have GFCI testing capabilities. It does have LED indicators and an on-tool diagnostic chart.

The RT250 has added functionality – the ability to test and reset GFCI outlets – as well as an LCD display. The RT250 is powered by 2x AAA batteries.

Compared to standard GFCI outlet testers, the RT250 also measures and displays the GFCI trip time and voltage. It has a 3-minute auto power-off.

Voltage Detectors: NCVT3P vs. NCVT1P

Klein Tools Voltage Tester NCVT3P

Both testers can detect voltages up to 1000V AC.

The NCVT3P tester has 2 detection ranges – 70 to 1000V AC and 12 to 1000V AC, while the NCVT1P detects from 50 to 1000V AC. Both have a CAT IV safety rating.

The NCVT3P also has a built-in LED Flashlight function.

There’s a $10 different in retail price – the NCVT1P typically sells for $20, and the NCVT3P for $30.

Which Should You Buy?

Klein describes the 3pc 69355 electrical tester kit as a premium kit. And, aside from the manual-ranging multimeter, you do Klein’s more premium voltage detector and a more-advanced-than-average outlet tester.

Unless you have specific reasons for preferring the other kit, the premium combo appears to be worth the extra $10.

I could not calculate a rough estimate for the sum of the components in the less expensive kit. The tools included in the $50 premium kit, if purchased separately, would be priced at $80 combined.

Between the two kits, the $50 gives you a marginally better multimeter, an outlet tester with GFCI tester (and LCD) – compared to one without this functionality in the $40 kit – and also a more premium voltage detector with built-in flashlight.

If you’re looking at both kits, I’d say that the premium 69355 kit is worth the extra $10.

Several retailers have the premium kit for $50, Amazon has it priced at $50.
