The Wave+ features 18 tools and functions, and in a relatively compact package that can be carried on your belt, in your pocket, or tool bag, or stored in a junk drawer, vehicle, or cabinet.

I’m most a fan of the Wave+ one-handed locking knife blade, flattened 1/4″ hex screwdriver bit holder (additional bits and standard adapters are available), combo-style pliers jaws, and the removable wire cutting blades.

Hmm, that’s most of the tool, isn’t it.

While I have yet to have to replace the wire cutting blades on any of my multi-tools, I like to know that I can. For the tools I can’t do this with, I shy away from certain tasks, just in case a too-hard wire or nail can permanently mar them.

I bought a pocket clip for my older Wave, but never used it. The Wave+ comes with a sheath, and the newest ones are – in my opinion – much better than the older ones.

$99.95 is still quite a bit of money for a multi-tool, but it’s appreciable better than the regular price of $119.95.

My older-style Wave was not my first multi-tool, it was my second, after I bought and enjoyed the use of a Gerber Suspension tool (the latest model is $29 at Amazon).

This is a great all-around multi-tool, with Leatherman describing it as “an international bestseller.” I don’t regret not splurging on my Wave first, as the less expensive Gerber helped me learn what I like and don’t in a multi-tool.

Today of course, I’d go straight to the Wave+ unless I had specific needs or preferences better met by other multi-tool designs. The Leatherman Skeletool, for example, is a minimalist tool I can more comfortably clip to my pocket.

Leatherman has announced their latest Garage Series product, the aptly named 40th Anniversary multi-tool.

Described as their most advanced multi-tool, the Leatherman 40th Anniversary Tool is built on their FREE technology platform and is built with a number of premium features.

As with the other Garage Series special edition tools that came before it, the new Leatherman 40th Anniversary multi-tool will only be available in limited quantities.

Leatherman’s Garage series is a sort of experimental platform, with limited edition tools that feature new materials or design innovations.

The brand says that this Batch #005 tool “pushes the boundaries of what is possible in a multi-tool with innovations that will no doubt be seen in future Leatherman products.”

To start off, the Leatherman 40th Anniversary multi-tool features a premium MagnaCut steel blade, which is an industry first for multi-tools.

MagnaCut has emerged as a premium and high-performing stainless steel alloy for EDC (everyday) folding knives.

Leatherman says:

Regarded as the best all-around steel for everyday carry knives, MagnaCut is first-class in terms of durability, edge retention, and corrosion resistance.

This isn’t just the same typical Leatherman knife blade but made from MagnaCut steel. It’s thicker than their usual blades, by around 20%, has a new thumb stud, and features a Cerakote finish.

All of the tools and features are one-hand operable, thanks to Leatherman’s FREE system pivot design.

I bought a Leatherman FREE multi-tool some time ago, and it’s indeed a fantastic multi-tool platform. In real-world use, it can be awkward to deploy some of the smaller tools with just one hand, but as effortless as can be with two.

Opening the handles deploys the pliers, which features a spring-action mechanism and replaceable wire cutting blades.

The removable pocket clip has also been given a Cerakote finish.

Even if you’re not a fan of Leatherman’s Garage series, or how the limited editions sell out very quickly, the 40th Anniversary tool paints a very exciting picture of Leatherman’s future.

I’m loving the look of the white Cerakote-finished handles and the contrast of the Cerakote-finished MagnaCut knife blade and belt clip.

The Leatherman FREE multi-tools are excellent, and I would expect no different from this one.

I bought two Leatherman Garage series tools so far – the Darkside and the Parts. The Darkside is okay, but I didn’t like the Parts and ultimately returned it to Leatherman for a refund.

If Leatherman’s 40th Anniversary multi-tool is as good as the FREE, it’ll surely be a top performer.

The latest Garage tool is undoubtedly going to cost a premium, like the four other special limited editions that came before it. We’ll find out the price when it launches next week.

Milwaukee came out with a new compact knife sharpener, model 48-22-1590.

It’s a simple tool accessory with a very user-friendly-seeming design.

There are two v-shaped pull-through sharpening slots, one with coarse carbide blades, and the other with fine ceramic blades, and also a fixed diamond rod for specialty blade sharpening.

A large finger loop helps provide for a secure grip, and there’s also a lanyard loop for tethering.

Milwaukee also built the sharpener with a magnet for an additional and convenient storage option.

The sharpener can be carried in a pocket, or attached to gear via a lanyard or tether.

Milwaukee says that the sharpener is covered by a limited lifetime warranty.

The sharpener measures 3.625″ long x 1.5″ wide x 0.5″ thick, and weighs around 1 oz.

It’s for products like this that I wish I had a window into the design process and decisions.

A compact knife sharpener? Milwaukee Tool?

I wouldn’t have guessed that something like this would be on their roadmap, but at the same time the sharpener looks like a compelling buy.

There are plenty of pocket sharpeners out there, but this one’s different.

None of the other popular models I’m familiar with have finger loops. Or a magnetic for pointing purposes. Some have lanyard holes, but they’re itty bitty.

It’s almost as if someone on Milwaukee’s product team is a backpacker and wanted some useful on-the-go features, and then someone else who’s avid in the workshop, yard, or garden expressed interest in added storage options.

Benchmade recently launched their popular Mini Bugout folding pocket knife in new colors.

In addition to the usual black and blue handles, the Benchmade Mini Bugout is now available with red, purple, and light blue handle scales.

Specifically, the new colors are Mesa Red, Alpine Glow, and Sea Foam.

The Benchmade Bugout is a popular EDC knife that’s prized for its… well, I’m actually not sure why it’s so extremely bestselling. I have a Bugout, and it is a good knife, but I like the Mini Bugout better. I’d really prefer something in the middle.

The Mini Bugout has a 2.82″ blade length, 6.49″ open length, and 3.7″ closed length. It weighs 1.5 oz.

The CPM S30V stainless steel blade material is a premium powdered steel alloy, the handle is grippy and comfortable, and the Axis lock is as good as the Benchmade mini Griptilians I’ve owned for years.

It’s a very average knife. I’d prefer it with a thumb hole like my mini-Grip, but the thumb studs on both Bugout sizes are alright.

Maybe that’s why it’s so popular with others – the Bugout is a somewhat utilitarian design. Personally I think I’d prefer a little more flair for what it costs, which is something I don’t believe I’ve ever said about a folding knife before.

If you’ve been looking to buy a Bugout, more color options are always good.

SOG is one of just a few tool brands that offer unique multi-tool designs. I bought a SOG PowerLock more than 10 years ago, and while it’s never my go-to, it has some compelling attributes.

The biggest selling point of SOG multi-tools are their pliers, which open quickly and easily, and deliver compound leverage.

According to SOG, the compound leverage pliers design “makes cutting and tightening twice as easy.”

The standard SOG PowerLock multi-tool has common tools and features, such as combination jaws, wire cutting blades, a combination knife blade, scissors, wood-cutting saw, bottle and can openers, and several screwdriver sizes.

It also has a 1/4″ driver that pairs with a square-to-hex socket adapter for use with 1/4″ hex screwdrivers and accessories. Mine came with such a socket, and the sheath had a dedicated spot for storing it.

SOG PowerLock multi-tools, even those described as being suited for daily professional use, also have an EOD crimper for military users.

I tend to prefer other brands’ multi-tools over SOG’s, such as Leatherman, Victorinox, and Gerber – in that order – but the PowerLock pliers have kept me from passing mine along to anyone else.

The pliers open quickly, via a geared mechanism. But, tread carefully, as you can smash your knuckles when opening the pliers with a wrist-flick motion.

I all but swore off SOG tools nearly 13 years ago, right after I received my purchase and asked them a question about the tool’s country of origin labeling. SOG customer service never responded to my two email inquiries, and I felt that their phone agent wasn’t any more helpful.

But, the pliers continue to offer distinct benefits.

Gerber and Leatherman have developed good one-hand-opening multi-tools as well, but nothing quite mirrors SOG’s compound leverage design and benefits.

The rest of my PowerLock tool is decent too, with easy-accessible tools. In addition to all of the non-pliers tools and functions requiring the pliers to be flipped open first, they’re also all secured behind a hinged cover.

A pro in some regards, and con in others, the PowerLock pliers are longer than other multi-tools. It also has a larger sheath, which fits the 1/4″ square to hex socket adapter at the bottom. Its size isn’t a concern when carried or stored in a pouch, bag, or tool box.

The latest models have a different nylon belt pouch, and it’s unclear as to whether SOG stills gives you the square to hex socket adapter. This is an inexpensive accessory you can always purchase separately.

Would I recommend the SOG PowerLock multi-tool?

Personally, I prefer more compact tools for EDC (everyday carry) and travel.

SOG advertises the PowerLock as having an “electrician wire cutter.” The wire cutting blades don’t have user-replaceable inserts, which I consider a must-have for modern tools aimed at professional use.

Aside from the pliers, the rest of the SOG multi-tool is average. However, the tools and functions feel strong, reliable, and as mentioned are easy to fold out and access. While not as good as the action on Leatherman’s Free series multi-tools, the SOG cost less than half the price.

The price is a strong selling point. You can get a basic but reliable Gerber for less, but there’s no similarly-featured Leatherman or Victorinox multi-tool at anywhere close to the PowerLock’s under-$40 price point.

The SOG PowerLock seemed worth revisiting for those 3 reasons – it’s decent enough I haven’t given mine away yet, it remains affordably priced, and its pliers are as of yet unmatched in their ease of opening and compound leverage.

All that said, I would recommend it, but not unconditionally. This is one of the most highly-functional multi-tools for the money.

The next step up would be the Leatherman Rebar multi-tool, which I reviewed here. At the time of this posting, the Rebar is $80 at Amazon, which is more than 35% higher-priced.

The Milspin Rhino Bar is a USA-made mini EDC pry bar tool that retails for $15.

It’s described as being a hardened stainless steel prying tool, keychain screwdriver, box cutter, and minimalist tool.

Milspin says the Rhino Bar is a versatile tool can be used for opening cans or bottles, removing nails or staples, scraping paint or glue, and tightening or loosening screws. They also say it can be used to break glass in an emergency.

The Rhino Bar is machined from a single piece of stainless steel, although Milspin doesn’t specify the alloy type, other than to say it’s “hardened stainless steel.”

The Rhino Bar is a keychain-sized EDC tool, measuring 3″ long, 0.35″ wide, and 0.35″ thick. It weighs 1.3 oz. There’s a slot at the end for a loop of paracord or a keyring.

Price: $15

I come across a lot of one-piece mini pry bars, multi-tools, and misc. EDC doodads. The appeal with this one is that it’s compact, simple, made in USA, and affordable.

Is it useful? Maybe. $15 is a lot less to risk than what it costs to get a fancier tool made from titanium.

The Rhino Bar isn’t unique; there are others like this one on Amazon and elsewhere, but Milspin’s version is made in the USA.

Field Notes are the perfect pocketable memo-style notebook for anyone that needs to jot something down on-the-go.

Leatherman kicked off “Wave Week,” with a close look at their “best-selling multi-tool ever.” After clicking through their newsletter, I realized that they had increased the price of the Wave+ multi-tool.

The Leatherman Wave+ is indeed a fantastic multi-tool, delivering high quality, useful functionality, and a very positive user experience.

It has been updated in recent years, such as with user-replaceable wire cutting blades, and as with other Leatherman tools it comes with a 25-year warranty.

The older-style Wave sold for around $60 for a long time. The updated Wave+ multi-tool launched at $99.95 back in 2018, and its price was bumped up to $109.95 around one year ago, at the start of 2022.

The Wave+ is now $119.95, reflecting an increase of $10.

It looks like many retailers have updated their pricing, although some are still offering it for $109.95. At the time of this posting, REI looks to have the best price at $109.95 with free shipping.

If the Wave+ multi-tool was on your 2023 shopping list, you might want to pick it up soon.

Leatherman has been steadily increasing their prices.

Certain models, such as the Micra keychain tool, are only available at Leatherman’s direct store now. I asked them whether this was due to cost considerations, as direct sales reduce the number of parties whose profits margins contribute towards end-user pricing, but they never followed up with an answer.

In 2021, Leatherman launched the Curl multi-tool, which looks a lot like their older Wave model. I consider it to be a “Wave+ Lite.” The Curl launched at $80 and is currently $90. Looking at online price trackers, the Curl increased in price close to the start of 2022.

Leatherman has released other lower-priced tools in recent years, such as the Bond multi-tool, which increased in price from $50 to $60 in mid-2022.

Nobody is happy about price increases. Personally, I’d rather see a price increase than drop in quality.

Leatherman Raptor Rescue

Designed to meet the needs and demands of rescuers and emergency personnel, the Leatherman Raptor Rescue can be used for all sorts of everyday cutting tasks.

Leatherman says it can be used as “emergency response shears, industrial shears, fabric shears, kitchen shears, and garden shears.”

The scissors fold up and can be stowed in the included utility holster.

Leatherman Gift Guide – 5 Tools to Give or Get

I’m sold on the Leatherman Micra, a keychain-sized multi-tool, and will be ordering one as a gift to myself this season. The only question is about which color option I should select, and whether I’ll get it customized too.

I love my Skeletool – it’s compact, minimalist, and has held up very well over the years. It has been the perfect EDC for times when all I need is a knife, pliers, and screwdriver.

Here’s a tough question – if I had to buy a new one, would I go for colored scales, customization, or both? If you don’t care for options, the plain-finish model is a classic.

I love my Wave, and the Wave+ is even better, with replaceable cutter blades.

If you want a slightly more compact and affordable tool, the Curl joined the lineup last year.

Is the Raptor Rescue overbuilt for my needs? Absolutely, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s a superb folding and portable cutting shear with bonus tools and functions built on.

If I ever lose my older black-handled version, I’d replace it in a heartbeat. I’m not sure I would personalize it, but I would absolutely choose one of the many bright new colors available.

Colors aren’t just about aesthetics; I have found that brighter colors can help me more quickly find a multi-tool (or flashlight) on a cluttered work surface.

I finally bought myself a Leatherman Free P4 multi-tool earlier this year, and my other multi-tools are jealous that I’m choosing it more and more over them.

This is a 21-function tool, and its magnetic opening and closing mechanisms.

Leatherman says this is their most advanced multipurpose tool ever made. It might not look like it at the surface, but after a few minutes in your hand, you’ll agree.

We’ve talked about tool brands’ Advent calendars before, but this one is different. This Boker Plus Advent calendar allows you to build a knife, piece by piece.

Should You Buy it?

This is Leatherman’s final batch of Juice multi-tools. Should you buy one?

Yes, and no.

Did you look for the Juice recently, find it out of stock everywhere, and kick yourself for not buying one sooner? Maybe you should buy one now.

Did you know about the Juice and decide it wasn’t a good fit for your needs, or maybe a less than ideal value for the money? Perhaps pass on it.

If you’re learning about the Juice for the first time, you might be feeling a sense of urgency, since this could be a “now or never” opportunity.

The Juice is a great tool. I bought a scissors-focused model 11 years ago, and still carry it on occasion. It’s a compact pocket-friendly tool that offers a lot of functionality while taking up little real estate in your pocket, bag, or kit.

Leatherman Juice CS4 vs XE6

The CS4 is a compact tool, but the XE4 gives you a couple of extra tools at no added cost.

From what I can tell, compared to the CS4, the Juice XE4 has:

• Second knife blade (serrated)
• Wood/metal file (one side)
• Diamond-coated file (opposite side)

Basically, you get one extra outside-accessible tool on each side of the XE6 compared to the CS4, which should only increase its thickness by a small amount.

For whatever reason, Leatherman only provides full specs for the XE6 and not the CS4:

Lastly, yes, it’s a bit frustrating that both outgoing models have corkscrews that some users might never need or want. I would suggest complaining loudly enough until Leatherman hears you, but it’s a moot point since this seems to be the end for the Juice line.

Leatherman sent a newsletter today, saying that their final batch of Juice multi-tools is set to “drop” on October 18th, 2022.

They add: “once they’re sold, they’re gone for good.”

Well, that’s sad. But on the bright side, at least they’re giving everyone a heads-up. I thought the Juice series was already officially discontinued, seeing as how you can’t buy it anywhere.

I missed out on quite a few Leatherman multi-tools, such as certain keychain models and other styles of Juice tools. If the Juice was still on my wishlist, I would indeed mark my calendar for a chance to get one.

It’s unclear whether the Juice “drop” will be on the main site, or Leatherman’s clearance section, but I would assume the latter.

From the newsletter image, it looks like it’s the Leatherman Juice CS4 that’s on the way out – or back for one last go since it currently isn’t available at Leatherman’s website or their usual retail partners.

The current version of the Juice CS4 launched in 2014 in several colors. It features anodized aluminum handles and 15 tools and functions:

• Regular pliers
• Spring-action scissors
• Wire cutters
• Hard-wire cutters
• 420HC knife (2.6″ blade)

Leatherman launched a new tool maintenance kit, which looks perfect for keeping your multi-tool and other EDC gear in perfect working order.

Here’s what the new Leatherman tool cleaning and maintenance kit comes with:

You might be saying “but I can get all that for a little less.” Great! What do you think about what Leatherman included in theirs?

This kit is for multi-tool users who don’t want to have to figure out what they might need, or where to source it from.

It’s a convenient starting point, in my opinion, with a mix of reusable, disposable, and consumable tools and supplies.

The blade sharpener, though – you can score the Work Sharp-branded model for quite a bit less at sporting good suppliers.

I hope that Leatherman eventually sells the components separately; I like the look of the case, but I have most of the included cleaning and maintenance tools and supplies already.

This is a logical direction for Leatherman to head into, especially given how popular their tools are with outdoors enthusiasts, hunters, and others who can benefit from regularly maintaining their gear.

Over at Olight, their latest LED flashlight, the Baton 3 Pro, is on sale as part of an introductory flash sale.

The Olight Baton 3 Pro delivers up to 1500 lumens and features a built-in 18650 rechargeable battery.

It measures just 3.99″ long, making it a good size for handheld use, pocket carry, or convenient placement in a tool bag or drawer.

The Baton 3 Pro comes with a magnetic tailcap charging cable (you’ll need a USB-A charging adapter), pouch, and compact steel bracket for magnetic docking that installs with 3M double-sided tape.

Compared to its predecessor, the S2R Baton II, the new Baton 3 Pro is brighter, has an improved side switch button, a longer two-way pocket clip, and a hidden proximity sensor.

The effect of the proximity sensor is slight, so much so that it took me a few minutes of testing to notice it. This is a safety measure to avoid the flashlight overheating in your pocket due to inadvertent activation. There’s also a built-in lockout function which requires a >2 second press.

There are two versions (cool white and neutral white) and 3 colors – black, desert tan, olive green.

The neutral white already sold out. I have a cool white for testing, and ordered two more to gives as gifts.

I prefer neutral white flashlights and broad emitters for close-up use. For a flashlight like this, which can be dimmed down for close-up use but excel at medium to longer distances, I prefer cool white. The CRI is 70.

I have a test-sample in-hand (thank you, Olight!) – please let me know what questions you might have.

In my opinion, look at the bundle deals first – there are a couple where you can get an i3E, imini Red, or Gober black – small lights – for just $1 more. (I went for the i3E, an excellent mini keychain-sized AAA light.)

If the Baton 3 Pro doesn’t perfectly suit your needs, check back next month – Olight holds regular flash sales that feature different products each time.
