Home Depot has another round of tool deals of the day, and as usual there are plenty of deals from Milwaukee Tool, Dewalt, Ridgid, and Ryobi, plus a couple of other brands.

Some of the Milwaukee tool deals are new and especially compelling.

For instance, the M12 Packout-compatible LED work light and USB charger is regularly $129-149. With the deal of the day special buy, you can get the light with a 2-battery and charger starter kit for $139.

There’s also the M12 cordless blower, regularly $99 for tool-only, for $139 with a 2-battery starter kit.

Some of the deals are not good buys. A single M18 3Ah battery for $105, for instance, is not good. Instead, I’d get the 2-pack with M18 XC 6Ah and CP 3Ah batteries for $179.

The deals of the day end at 3am ET 8/15/23 unless supplies sell out sooner.

If you’re thinking that it’s unusual for Home Depot to be having so many tool-related deals of the day, it’s not you – I’ve noticed the same as well, not that I’m complaining.

Too many tool deals of the day sales events are better than too few, something I hope that Lowe’s realizes at some point.

Olight has a new flash sale that’s running through 8/10/2023, and one of the highlights is the new Odiance worklight.

The Odiance is Olight’s first larger form factor cordless work light – or at least the first I have seen. They have other worklights, but not like this one.

The worklight features COB (chip-on-board) LED emitter tech, and can deliver up to 3000 lumens.

It features adjustable color temperature, an easy-carry form factor, IPX5 dust resistance, a remote control, and stepless dimming.

The Olight Odiance is recharged via USB-C in under 5.5 hours, and it can also charge other devices with USB-C and USB-A ports, up to 30W.

The adjustable color temperature seems neat (this is common in video lights, AC and rechargeable), as does the remote, light stand and tripod compatibility.

The design looks sound so far, but I was reluctant to give it a shot, given how I – like many of you – am reluctant about worklights with built-in batteries.

Olight sent over a sample for consideration anyway, and added in a coupon offer. I’ve started working with a review sample, and I’m intrigued by the convenient form factor – please let me know if you have any questions.

I bought a Farm Tuff plastic deck wagon a few years ago, and was recently looking at a metal-deck wagon from the same brand.

I ultimately went with a hand truck-style convertible cart, but kept this Farm Tuff in my Amazon shopping cart as a “save for later” item.

It has a 38” x 20” metal deck, and can hold up to 800 lbs.

The undercarriage is different compared to my plastic-deck cart, which is what I was looking for.

The price recently dropped to $152 from around $190 or so if I recall correctly.

I don’t have space for one, but I figured I’d share about this in case any readers were in the market for one.

It’s made in Canada, except for the wheels, I believe.

Update: Sorry, it looks like Amazon caught wind of the attention and jacked the price back up.

Leatherman’s hugely popular Wave+ multi-tool is on sale right now, with a $20 discount bringing the price down to $99.95 with free shipping.

$99.95 is still quite a bit of money for a multi-tool, but it’s appreciable better than the regular price of $119.95.

My older-style Wave was not my first multi-tool, it was my second, after I bought and enjoyed the use of a Gerber Suspension tool (the latest model is $29 at Amazon).

This is a great all-around multi-tool, with Leatherman describing it as “an international bestseller.” I don’t regret not splurging on my Wave first, as the less expensive Gerber helped me learn what I like and don’t in a multi-tool.

Today of course, I’d go straight to the Wave+ unless I had specific needs or preferences better met by other multi-tool designs. The Leatherman Skeletool, for example, is a minimalist tool I can more comfortably clip to my pocket.

It’s the black-barrel 0.5mm pencil that’s on sale, for $17.66 at the time of this posting. This is a steep discount compared to the pencil’s regular price of $29 to $31 at other reputable sellers.

I bought mine for a little more 5 years ago, and it is one of the finest mechanical pencils I have ever used.

In my experience, the rOtring 600 has a comfortably balanced metal barrel and a very satisfying and precise lead advancement mechanism.

Do you need one? Probably not. But maybe you want a fine precision tool at a discount.

Unless something has changed that I didn’t hear about, the rOtring 600 is made in Japan.

“I want a great mechanical pencil but that’s too much money.”

I’ve got two recommendations for you – the Staedtler 925 series (~$11-12 at Amazon), and the Pentel GraphGear 1000 (~$8-12 at Amazon).

The Staedtler feels like a finer writing instruments, but the GraphGear 1000 is a more durable and even workshop-friendly mechanical pencil, thanks to its retractable lead tube.

I prefer 0.5mm mechanical pencils for most tasks, and use 0.7mm sizes for rougher markings and such.

Lowe’s stores have started to put most of their Ideal electrical hand tools on clearance, presumably to make room for Klein tools.

As we reported earlier this year, Klein Tools are coming to Lowe’s, following 14 years of exclusivity at Home Depot.

When the announcement was made, it was said that Lowe’s stores would start selling Klein products in the second half of 2023, which we are now in.

None of the Lowe’s stores near me had any Klein tools on the shelves or pegs. I also checked overhead but didn’t see any Klein-branded boxes.

Lowe’s is labeling the tools as being a special value for a limited time, but that’s likely just a euphemism for the tools being on clearance.

I don’t see how there could be room for both Klein and Ideal electrical tools, but maybe there will be some intermingling. Time will tell.

As of the time of this posting, it looks like the deals are only available in-store, but this could change.

In other news, Home Depot is clearing out Klein tools but have not yet announced which tool brand or brands will take their place.

Home Depot stores appear to be dumping Klein Tools, and have put nearly all of their Klein electrical tools and accessories on clearance.

There are some great deals to be found, and some of the pegs at my local Home Depot have already been sold-through.

The discounts have only appeared at my local stores. Business is usual on Home Depot’s website, with no Klein tools or products clearanced-priced there yet.

My local Home Depot store has discounted most but not all of their Klein tools yet.

Select hand tools and multimeters have not yet been given sale prices or clearance tags.

All kinds of Klein tools are included in the clear-out, such as screwdrivers, pliers, insulated hand tools, wire strippers, general purpose tools – such a combination square – and specialty electrical tools.

It’s uncertain if any Klein Tools will remain in Home Depot stores, or which brands’ tools will replace them.

We knew that this might be coming.

Lowe’s and Klein Tools announced a new partnership earlier this year, and said that Klein products will be sold at Lowe’s stores and online starting in the second half of 2023, which we’re now in.

This effectively marked the end of Klein’s exclusivity arrangement with Home Depot, which was announced 14 years ago.

Home Depot has not made any announcements about Klein Tool’s exit, but yellow clearance stickers and empty tool pegs speak volumes.

It’s time for another round of example of funky retail price math, this time featuring the new Makita 18V cordless hammer drill.

I recently posted about the drill’s seemingly inflated torque claims, but here we’re just talking about tool pricing.

The new Makita XPH16T 18V cordless hammer drill kit seems a bit pricey at $359.

This kit comes with the drill/driver, 2x 5Ah batteries, and a tool bag.

The screenshot is from Tool Nut. Acme Tools has the same price, and I saw the same at other authorized dealers.

The new hammer drill is also bundled in a 2pc cordless combo kit. This XT296ST kit comes with the same XPH16 hammer drill, an XDT14 impact driver, 2x 5Ah batteries, charger, and tool bag.

The XDT14 launched at least 5 years ago – I referenced it in a 2018 post – and I found mentions of it in emails dating back to 2016.

It’s a bit strange for a brand new hammer drill to be paired with an older impact driver like this one.

The price for this 2pc combo kit is $339. Again, the same price is found at multiple authorized Makita tool dealers.

The drill kit is $359. Add in an impact driver and… the price goes down by $20?

At these retail prices, they’re basically paying you $20 to take the impact driver. Even if you don’t need it, $339 is lower than $359.

I’m not saying that this is a good price – $339 still seem high for what you’re getting.

At the time of this posting, Milwaukee’s M18 Fuel hammer drill and impact driver combo kit is $379 at Home Depot, plus you get a bonus battery. Both tools greatly outclass the ones in this Makita combo kit. Earlier this week, the Milwaukee combo kit was $349 for the two tools, 2x 5Ah batteries, charger, tool case, and a bonus battery.

$339 seems like a lot for a kit with a compact hammer drill and several year old impact driver.

Is the drill-only kit priced at $359 to make this combo kit seem like a great price at $339?

Actually, that makes sense. I wanted to try the Makita XGT cordless impact driver, and the way things worked out, I saved a lot of money by getting the combo kit with the hammer drill rather than just the impact driver in a kit, plus I got an extra bonus battery too. That was a few months ago, before the last price increase.

Maybe these kits will be discounted in a couple of months for the winter holiday shopping season, but it’s too soon to tell.

Home Depot is having another round of tool deals of the day for today, July 31, 2023.

The latest batch of promos features corded and cordless power tools from Dewalt, Milwaukee, Ridgid, Ryobi, and one from Dremel, and a selection of hand tools and accessories.

Here are some of the deals I found to be especially noteworthy:

As usual, you need to price things out carefully to analyze the bundle deals.

The M18 Fuel deep-cutting band saw, for example, comes with the bare-tool, model 2729-20, and bonus High Output XC 6Ah battery, 48-11-1865. Shopping around, other sellers also have a “buy the bare tool get a free battery” promo.

The bare tool is $379 at other retailers, also with a free bonus battery. But with Home Depot’s deal of the day price of $309, you save $60 on top of that for a limited time.

Not everything is a good deal. I’d skip the Dewalt 20V Max Atomic drill kit, a $119 deal of the day special buy, and consider the newer model kit, with 1x 2Ah battery instead of 2x 1.3Ah, for $99. The newer model kit is a seasonal special buy, and in my opinion a much better deal.

The deals of the day end at 3am ET 8/1/23, unless supplies sell out sooner.

Over at Amazon, they have this Milwaukee Packout and 100pc Shockwave bit set bundle, and they’re beating Home Depot on its price.

As I’ve posted about in the past, this set is “regularly” $100, but sells for $50 much of the year as part of different seasonal promotions or sales.

Every now and then there’s an added deal of the day or similar, where Home Depot will drop the price to $45 very temporarily.

Finding Milwaukee Tool products on Amazon isn’t surprising.

From what I have seen, it seems that a lot of 3rd party sellers buy up inventory from Home Depot or other authorized dealers, and put them on Amazon at a markup.

That’s retail arbitrage, and a lot of resellers on Amazon do this with a range of products.

But here, it lists Amazon.com as the seller and shipper, which makes no sense, as Amazon is not an authorized dealer.

So where are they getting their inventory from?

This has happened a couple of times over the years, such as a couple of years ago when Amazon was selling Harbor Freight Hercules tools.

If the items weren’t available for purchase, I’d chalk it up to a search engine optimization type of tactic. But you can buy the Milwaukee bit set and Packout tool case combo, and for less than Home Depot is selling it for at the moment.

Update: It looks like the set is back to its regular pricing. Check back; we don’t know when, but the set has always gone back to its promotional price of ~$50, it’s just a matter of time.

This is strange – I wonder what’s going on here. How are they selling this directly if they’re not an authorized dealer?

Milwaukee M12 Fuel Oscillating Multi-Tool Kit – $159

The M12 Fuel OMT kit is currently a special buy at Home Depot for $179, and so this deal saves you another $20. This tool offers a great balance between size (and weight) and performance. It has a tool-free blade change and brushless motor. This kit is bundled with a compact HO (high output) 2.5Ah battery, charger, and case.

Dewalt ToughSystem 2.0 XL Tool Box – $59

This is a fantastic price for the largest ToughSystem 2.0 tool box. It’s a great for anyone looking to add to their modular tool storage setup, and also anyone looking for just a large capacity tool box. It has a 110 lb load capacity, IP65 waterproof rating, metal latches, and removable inner tray.

Crescent 150pc Tool Set – $75

I’m not a fan of entry-level tool sets like this, but it could be a good bargain if you are.

Rolair 1 HP Ultra-Quiet 2.5 Gallon Air Compressor – $289

It features an oil-less pump and can deliver up to 2.4 CFM at 90 PSI. The noise level is said to be 60 dB. I had a good experience with Rolair when I reviewed this model’s predecessor. They;ve changed a couple of things since then, such as the position and angle of the pressure gauges.

New Craftsman made in USA mechanics tool sets, advertised as being forged in Texas, are finally available at Lowe’s.

The Craftsman 88pc tool set, CMMT45018, has appeared at Lowe’s stores nationwide and are also available online.

Readers have also reported finding the new USA-made sets at Exchange stores.

At Lowe’s stores, the Craftsman tool sets might be in different locations. My closest store put the 88pc tool set out on the floor – literally – near the usual Craftsman mechanics tool sets.

Another Lowe’s store had a promotional display near the entrance, as shown at the top of the post. I learned of one store that placed their Craftsman tool set promotional display in the lumber aisle.

The 88pc set comes with 1/4″ and 3/8″ ratchets with 90T gearing and quick release feature, shallow and deep sockets (6pt), a couple of drive accessories, a screwdriver handle, screwdriver bits, and hex keys.

According to the packaging, the ratchet, sockets, and wrenches are made in the USA from global materials, and the other tools are made in Taiwan.

Price: $69.98

You might have an easier time ordering online; I had to do a lot of legwork to find the 88pc set in person.

I purchased a test sample, and while not perfect (e.g. the 3/8″ ratchet has a chrome defect), the tool quality seems to be good for the price.

Craftsman also has a smaller 59pc set, CMMT45016, with 3/8″ ratchet, sockets, screwdriver handle, and bits.

Price: $49.98

Lowe’s website reports that my closest store has 7 of the 59pc set available for delivery or free pickup within 3 hours, but I was unable to purchase a set in person.

The Lowe’s associates first told me the sets couldn’t be sold until Q3. When I asked when that would be, they said a quarter is every 3 months. Doesn’t Q3 start in July?

Then, they said that “oh, it’ll take 20 minutes to get it down because it’s on a pallet.” And then, “if we take it down and there’s a store inspection we’ll get in a lot of trouble.”

They told me to “come back in August.”

Both sets can be purchased via Lowe’s website, and so it’s not clear why they wouldn’t sell me the tool set at the store itself. This has never happened to me at Home Depot.

Hopefully you won’t run into the same obstacles.

The two mechanics tool sets – 88pc and 59pc – are both “limited time buys,” in the most literal sense possible. These tools are not being produced anymore, and so once they sell out, they won’t be restocked.

Retailers have begun posting “beat the price increase” notifications for SawStop table saws and accessories.

The SawStop price increases are said to go into effect on August 1st, 2023.

It has not yet been published which SawStop table saws or accessories will be increasing in price, or by how much.

One SawStop dealer shared a sampling of the price increase for example purposes, showing that two cabinet saw models will increase by around 2%, a dust collection accessory will increase by around 4.6%, and the SawStop brake cartridges (standard and dado) will increase by $4 each, reflecting increases of 4.2% and 3.5%, respectively.

Increases on SawStop table saws, attachments, and accessories could add up. If you were planning to make a big purchase, you might want to think about placing your order before the increases go into effect.

There’s no word as to whether the freight fees for portable and cabinet saws are also going up.

With the increases going into effect August 1st, the cut-off for ordering at current pricing will be July 31, 2023.

Bucket Boss Tool Belt with Suspenders

I haven’t seen much activity from the Bucket Boss tool storage accessory brand in a few years, and so this blue leather tool belt – and two others (in red and green) – definitely got my attention.

It features 19 pockets, with a leather belt and mixed construction tool pouches made with 1680D 2-ply poly fabric.

The suspenders have a “LoadBear” stretch suspension.

Apparently these aren’t new to the brand, but new to me.

Amazon is matching the price of the blue and green tool belts, and has much better pricing on the red version.

Milwaukee Hardline EDC Knife 2-Pack

Milwaukee’s Hardline folding knives are decent. They’re reasonably well-made, and their D2 blades are well suited for work.

The 48-22-1994 has a 3-inch plain edge drop point blade, and the 48-22-1998 has a 3-inch partially serrated Tanto-style blade.

Of the two, I prefer the plain edge blade – they’re easier to sharpen – but the Tanto style could be an all-around workhorse.

I don’t recall seeing the Hardline knives on sale for a while.

Would I choose differently for the same money? Yes – the Civivi Elementum might be a well-matched alternative. But I feel that the Hardline series can be a good intro into EDC knives.

Craftsman’s V-Series ratcheting wrenches dropped in price a couple of days before Prime Day, and they’re still on sale.

I bought a set of the metric wrenches (shown above) and SAE sizes (shown below).

One of the best parts about these sets is the compact holder. The wrenches fit in neatly, and the case halves fold together to create a very packable and grabbable size.

I really like the I-beam-style grip, and the angle of the open head. It’s comfortable, and from earlier experiences, the head angle can engage a fastener in tight spaces.

The design is not new to me; I love my Facom wrenches of a very similar design. (Facom is a pro-grade tool brand that’s more widely known overseas and is also owned by Stanley Black & Decker.)

My experience with Facom tools is part of why I am a big fan of the V-Series. With the Craftsman V-Series, Stanley Black & Decker has greatly improved the availability of their European hand tool designs, and at more affordable prices. Plus I don’t have to go through the hassle of ordering them from international sellers.

I have already used Craftsman V-Series wrenches, but I saw this new sponsorship as an opportunity to get a set of the ratcheting wrenches that I could call my own.

I bought several Proto I-beam-style ratcheting spline wrenches a few years ago – just the sizes I use most often, and then a couple more. I like them a lot, but couldn’t justify a metric set, or a second SAE set I can “grab and go.”

Unfortunately, only the ratcheting wrenches are on sale, and the non-ratcheting combination wrenches are not.

Are these the best ratcheting wrenches on the market today? Probably not. I am a big fan of the design, and the portable sets fill a long-noticed hole in my tool kit.

SAE Sizes: 5/16″ 3/8″ 7/16″ 1/2″ 9/16″ 5/8″ 11/16″ 3/4″

Metric Sizes: 8 10 11 12 13 14 17 19mm

Price: $67.98 for the SAE set, $68.98 for the metric set

Both sets are backordered at the moment, and there’s no indication as to how long they’ll stay at the current deal pricing. Amazon’s “save 20%” claims are accurate – the sets were indeed $84.98 each at the end of June.

For those of you that bought a set on Prime Day, what do you think about these wrenches?

Because of the SBD/Craftsman sponsorship, I’m biting my tongue here a bit and masking my extreme enthusiasm for this style of wrench. I haven’t reviewed these ratcheting wrenches yet, but I did review the Facom 440 series non-ratcheting combination wrenches, here.

I love the size, shape, feel, and storage case of these premium Craftsman wrenches. I bought a set for myself two weeks ago and rebought them at the lower price (thank goodness for Amazon’s free returns on most products).

Hultafors Chisel Knife

While not quite as appealing, in my opinion, as the Mora (see it here), this one’s half the price. It’s half knife, half chisel, with overly positive user reviews.

From what I’ve seen, the average person has two kinds of flashlights – the one built into their cell phones, and old and junky cheapies that never work right when they need them to.

I picked up the Dualie for my household, and then made sure to send more to family members.

It has a spot light, a side-aiming flood light, and intrinsically safe industrial body.

3M P100 Bayonet-Mount Respirator Filters

I’m a bit surprised that this is high on the top-25 list, but perhaps shouldn’t be. Amazon has quite a few Prime Day deals on PPE gear and accessories.

If you’ve got to buy some consumables, such as respirator cartridges, why not stock up when they’re discounted.

Personally, I’m also looking at the new style of 3M face masks with clip-in cartridges but might make the opportunity to get a few of these bayonet-style cartridges as well.
