Ryobi launched their line of USB Lithium cordless power tools in accessories in January 2022, and has expanded the line a couple of times since then.

Ryobi USB Lithium tools are powered by a 4V max rechargeable Li-ion battery that features built-in USB-C charging. A 3-port charging station is also available.

The tools are compact and relatively affordable. Perhaps more important than that, they are convenient.

Ryobi recently added two more tools to the lineup – a high-CRI LED worklight, and a “desktop vacuum.”

With these two additions, that brings the total number of tools and solutions to 18 products, by my count, not including the different batteries or charging station.

I find it especially interesting that there’s not much competition in this space, and no signs of any competing brand throwing much resistance into Ryobi’s path.

Ryobi-USB-Lithium-Tools

The lineup launched with just 4 tools and 1 size of battery.

Ryobi USB Lithium Cordless Power Tools Mid-2023

Just a few months ago, there were 9 tools, 2 batteries, and the 3-port charger.

Now, they’re at 18 tools, 3 batteries, and the charger.

What kinds of USB Lithium tools do you want to see Ryobi come out with next?

Here’s the list of everything that has been launched or announced to date:

Best Cordless Power Tool Brands (2023) https://toolguyd.com/best-cordless-power-tool-brand/ https://toolguyd.com/best-cordless-power-tool-brand/#comments Thu, 20 Jul 2023 00:12:00 +0000 https://toolguyd.com/?p=107594 Dewalt vs Milwaukee Cordless ScrewdriversWhich is the best cordless power tool brand? Let's talk about them all.]]>
Dewalt vs Milwaukee Cordless Screwdrivers

Which is the BEST cordless power tool brand? Dewalt? Milwaukee? Ryobi? This seems like a simple question, but the answer isn’t.

I last attempted to tackle this question in early 2021, and there have been enough developments and changes in the 2-1/2 years since then to justify an update.

Here is the question that started it all:

If you had to stick to one brand for most of your tools which would it be? Taking into consideration tool reliability, power, ergonomics, batteries and number of cordless tools.

Just one brand?! Dewalt. Wait, no – Milwaukee. Metabo HPT?

Most cordless power tool brands have their distinct innovations and selling points, and tool brands continuously and fiercely compete for a spot in your tool box.

Whether the question is about the best cordless power tool brand overall, or even which one brand I would stick with, the answer depends on the user.

Are you an electrician? Plumber? Carpenter? Deck builder? DIYer? Every user’s needs are different, and there’s really no singular best brand overall.

The real question to answer is this one – which is the best cordless tool brand for you?

Instead of simply answering the title question, I will offer my opinions on each particular tool brand to help you make your own determinations.

As always, readers’ opinions are extremely valuable. What would you say to anyone looking to buy into a cordless power tool system?

The brands below are listed in alphabetical order.

Bosch

Bosch AmpShare 18V Battery

Benefits: Good performance and reliability.

Downsides: Historically, Bosch has not kept up with competitors in the USA, and some innovations are released here later than in Europe or not at all.

What I Said in 2021: Bosch makes some spectacular tools. Looking at the greater picture, their 12V and 18V platforms aren’t as compelling as competing platforms. While I was impressed with some of their past releases, there are fewer reasons to buy into either of Bosch’s cordless power tool systems today.

What’s Changed? Bosch recently launched AmpShare, where their 18V battery will soon power a range of tools from numerous partnered brands. They have been releasing new tools at a faster pace, and also seem to have abandoned the somewhat silly names given to certain tools, such as “the Freak.”

Bosch still has holes in their cordless lineup, but they’ve been filling some of the more glaring ones. I anticipate that AmpShare will greatly help with this.

Craftsman

Craftsman V20 4pc Cordless Power Tool Combo Kit

Benefits: Affordable price points for DIYers.

Downsides: Limited selection.

What I Said in 2021: Craftsman has been slow to expand their V20/20V Max cordless power tool lineup, but there are some interesting entries, such as a cordless air compressor.

What’s Changed? Craftsman has steadily been expanding their line of V20 cordless power tools, but still not at anywhere close to the pace of their top competitor. Their Brushless RP tools offer higher performance.

Dewalt

Dewalt Power Detect Cordless Power Tools

Benefits: Excellent tools, expansive selection, comfortable ergonomics, great reliability. Dewalt has been continually expanding their 20V Max cordless power tool lineup, as well as their FlexVolt lineup, and they have also been actively expanding their 12V Max Xtreme Subcompact line.

Downsides: Sorting through some of their core options can be a little confusing. For instance, you can now choose between 20V Max brushless, 20V Max Power Detect, FlexVolt 60V Max, and 20V Max FlexVolt advantage saws.

What I Said in 2021: Dewalt continues to have a lot of “firsts.” They’re no longer playing catch-up and are once again pushing boundaries.

Quite simply put, you cannot go wrong with Dewalt cordless power tools. Dewalt’s cordless platforms continue to have a lot of strengths, and few weaknesses.

If I had to choose a “Best Cordless Power Tool Brand Overall” winner, Dewalt would face off against Milwaukee in a battle too close to easily call.

What’s Changed? Dewalt has entered the automotive tool market with new ratchets, and recently launched new rivet tools. They’ve been filling noticeable holes. Dewalt’s PowerStack batteries provide numerous benefits over older technologies.

Notable Products: Power Detect and FlexVolt Advantage lines bridge the gap between 20V Max and FlexVolt 60V Max platforms. Even so, FlexVolt still provides a power benefit that most other 18V/20V Max systems struggle to match.

Festool

Festool 18V Cordless Power Tools

Benefits: Unique tools, such as hybrid corded-cordless sanders, good quality, brand reputation.

Downsides: Very limited product selection, very high pricing.

What I Said in 2021: If you want a Festool power tool, and you want it to be cordless, you have some options. Festool made a push in 2020 to consolidate some of their cordless power tools into combo kits aimed at contractors and remodelers.

Festool’s cordless platforms are limited, presumably because they are more of a finish and fine work brand. The brand is not focused on the broader needs of users involved in construction or the trades.

Additionally, Festool’s high pricing can make the tools inaccessible to many individual users.

What’s Changed? Festool has made some questionable design choices, such as launching a cordless dust collector vacuum that can only be used with smaller low capacity batteries. There’s also a new cordless reciprocating saw, which fills a hole in their cordless lineup, but doesn’t seem to be in the spirit of the brand’s core competency – fine finishing tools.

Flex

Flex 24V Max 6-Tool Cordless Power Tool Combo Kit

Benefits: Competitive performance (at least), next-gen Stacked Lithium batteries, numerous innovations and tools with distinct user benefits.

Downsides: As a relatively new brand, Flex is going to be playing catch-up for a few years, in terms of product selection and market share. Their 24V battery is going to be slightly larger than 18V batteries, but not without positive traits (such as in power delivery).

Overall: Flex has expanded their line of 24V Max brushless cordless power tools at a rapid pace. The brand recently launched new compact core tools, and a strong selection of specialty tools, such as a cordless router, sander, and band saws.

Flex aspires to be a major player in the professional cordless power tool industry, and so far it seems they’re doing everything right to get there.

Hart

Walmart Hart Tools Black Friday 2020 Tool Deals Hero

What I Said in 2021: Hart is a Walmart-exclusive brand that offers entry-priced cordless power tools that are similar to Ryobi’s most basic offerings. If you’re shopping for the lowest cost cordless power tools on the market, I’d go with Hart (or any of these other brands) over the no-name stuff on Amazon and other online marketplaces.

What’s Changed? Hart doesn’t share product news, but it looks like they added a couple of new tools since I last checked. Hart still looks to be an entry-level cordless brand aimed at beginners or Walmart shoppers buying on impulse.

Hercules (Harbor Freight)

New Harbor Freight Hercules Cordless Power Tools Coming Soon Starting Q42019

Benefits: Better cordless tools for Harbor Freight shoppers.

Downsides: Limited selection, young brand reputation, still Harbor Freight.

What I Said in 2021: Harbor Freight launched the Hercules cordless power tool platforms with name-brand competitors in sight. I purchased earlier samples, and while respectable, the tools lacked the fit and finish I would expect from true professional-grade cordless power tool brands.

Harbor Freight and their Hercules line have potential, but it seems they are still striving to make cheaper tools. With new brushless tools on the way, it’s possible they are trying to walk down a different path, at least as far as the Hercules lines are concerned.

Harbor Freight has the potential to disrupt the core cordless power tools market, but they still have to prove they can deliver quality.

What’s Changed? Harbor Freight has been steadily expanding their Hercules lineup of “professional” tools. The quality seems to have improved – from pretty good to almost great – and the tools now boast a 5 year limited warranty.

Harbor Freight has been bouncing between different marketing strategies, and with the latest changes they’ve been following examples set by major industry players.

The tools are not quite on even ground with those from the tool brands Harbor Freight claims Hercules compares to, but they are inching closer.

Hilti

Hilti-Nuron-Cordless-Power-Tool-Platform

Benefits: Strong reputation, gimmick-free solutions.

Downsides: Limited retail availability, limited tool selection, high prices.

What I Said in 2021: Hilti tends to target commercial users, rather than individuals. They have a strong focus on masonry tools, but also some exceptionally capable tools for working with wood, metal, and other common construction and fabrication materials.

What’s Changed? Hilti launched Nuron, a new line of 22V cordless power tools. While not as comprehensive as competing professional tool brands’ lineups, Hilti quickly converted over dozens of tools from the outgoing tool system. There are still a lot of holes that need to be filled.

Hilti still needs to do a better job at appealing to individual tool users.

Kobalt

Kobalt 24V Next-Generation 4-Tool Cordless Combo Kit

Benefits: Brushless motors, inexpensive pricing on spare/replacement batteries.

Downsides: Limited selection.

What I Said in 2021: Lowe’s Kobalt 24V max cordless power tool platform focuses on brushless-motor tools, and with reasonable and competitive pricing.

There’s not much compromise when it comes to performance, and the newer XTR tools take things to another level with respect to power and features.

What’s Changed? Kobalt launched all-new core cordless power tools. They seemed to have all but dropped the XTR performance line of tools, except during holiday shopping seasons when the combos make a quick reappearance.

Lowe’s never seems to have a clear direction in mind for their exclusive tool brand.

Makita

Makita Outdoor Adventure Cordless Power Tools 2022

Benefits: Broad 18V cordless power tool system.

Downsides: Makita has been slow to adapt to industry trends, and certain product categories are difficult to sort out with an excessive number of options. The 18V line hasn’t kept up with competing tool systems, and the new XGT line is very limited and expensive. Their revamped 12V Max cordless system has been stagnant.

What I Said in 2021: Some of Makita’s 18V LXT cordless tools are competitive, but the system has hit its limits. The new Makita XGT 40V Max platform is due to launch in the USA at some point, but the new system is not backwards compatible with their 18V cordless system.

What’s Changed? Makita has finally brought a couple of tools from the XGT line to the LXT line, but many premium features remain XGT exclusives, such as cordless drill anti-kickback tech.

Makita launched Outdoor Adventure in the USA, a new line of existing 18V tools but in an olive green color.

They have two main cordless systems – 18V LXT and 36V/40V Max XGT, and aren’t throwing their full weight behind either one.

Makita USA recently cut jobs company-wide, following their third price increase in just over a year.

Metabo

Metabo 12V Cordless Drill with Quick Chuck

Benefits: Great quality, performance, and reliability, and a strong reputation. Metabo offers more specialty tools that cater to fabrication and metalworking industries.

Downsides: Limited selection, less market availability and visibility compared to other pro-grade brands,

What I Said in 2021: Metabo has a lot of great cordless power tools, and has been expanding steadily. Its 18V cordless platform is more expansive in Europe, but an increasing number of tools have launched in the USA as well.

Metabo has embarked on a mission towards enabling a truly cordless jobsite, and each year they move closer and closer to that goal.

What’s Changed? Metabo used to do their part in driving the industry forward, but lately it seems like they’ve been falling behind. Where’s the cordless table saw, dust collection systems, air compressor, or other tools needed for the “cordless jobsite” they talked so much about over the years?

Metabo HPT (Formerly Hitachi Power Tools)

Metabo HPT Sub-Compact Cordless Drill and Impact Driver

Benefits: Metabo HPT offers many excellent-quality 18V and MultiVolt cordless power tools, and occasionally innovates with unique offerings.

Downsides: Limited selection, Hitachi to Metabo HPT name-change has resulted in quite a bit of confusion. There’s added confusion between Metabo HPT and Metabo, as there is zero compatibility between the two brands’ cordless platforms.

What I Said in 2021: As a system, Metabo HPT offers a much smaller selection of cordless power tools than other brands. They have quite a few competitive and compelling tools, making the brand a potentially good choice if their strengths align with particular user needs and wants.

What’s Changed? Metabo HPT has been releasing new tools at a steady pace. Their MultiVolt cordless platform is excellent, and remains a very competitive choice. The brand needs greater market visibility; select tools are available at Lowe’s, but the retailer has done little to promote the brand or drive consumer awareness.

Notable Products: Metabo HPT’s 18V Triple Hammer impact driver remains a personal favorite.

Milwaukee

Milwaukee M18 Cordless Power Tool Combo Kit and Packout Rolling Tool Box Promo 2018

Benefits: Great quality, reliability, and performance. Fantastic M18 (18V/20V-class) cordless power tool system and unmatched M12 (12V-class) tool selection. Milwaukee Tool is a very active innovator.

Downsides: M12 tools have a stem-style battery that inserts into the hand grip, resulting in a chunkier grip than some other brands can accomplish with slide-style batteries.

What I Said in 2021: Milwaukee seeks to be a “solutions provider,” and they charge into new markets with a disruptive ferocity. Their philosophy for the M12 cordless system has been to provide user-friendly alternatives to hand tools, and their expanding M18 system offers all the core tools pros and demanding users might need, plus many trade-specific options.

Milwaukee Tool cordless power tools can carry premium pricing, but they regularly offer very aggressive promotions in the form of free tool or battery bonus bundles.

While not the market-leader in every category, Milwaukee is an easy recommendation. Quite simply put, you can’t go wrong with Milwaukee cordless power tools.

If I absolutely had to choose a “Best Cordless Power Tool Brand Overall” winner, Milwaukee would face off against Dewalt in a battle too close to easily call.

What’s Changed? Milwaukee has continued to innovate and push forward in recent years. I expect to see the brand shake up the entire industry once they launch – and heavily advertise – next-gen power tool batteries built with pouch-style Li-ion cells.

The MX Fuel line of cordless equipment redefined what can be powered with a cordless battery, and still holds untapped potential.

Notable Products: Milwaukee’s M12 Fuel and M18 Fuel brushless power tools are often considered the gold standard.

Porter Cable

Porter Cable PCC601LB Cordless Drill Kit

Benefits: None.

Downsides: Limited selection, limited availability.

What I Said in 2021: Porter Cable was effectively pushed out of Lowe’s when Craftsman (also a Stanley Black & Decker brand) came along, and out of Walmart after TTI launched their exclusive Hart tool brand there.

Porter Cable announced a new partnership with Tractor Supply in late-2021. No new tools or developments have been announced since then.

The brand doesn’t appear to be investing any time, effort, or resources into their cordless platform.

What’s Changed? Nothing.

Ridgid

Ridgid New Cordless Power Tools Spring 2023 Hero

Benefits: Ridgid has a strong selection of core 18V cordless power tools, and some unique and innovative tools sprinkled in. The brand offers a good balance between performance and price.

The Limited Lifetime Service Agreement covers parts, service, and batteries – with some restrictions.

Downsides: Smaller selection of 18V tools compared to other brands, 12V system has been abandoned (although you can still buy replacement batteries or chargers).

What I Said in 2021: Ridgid is a good brand and they have continued to expand and enhance their 18V cordless power tool system over the years. Some of their tools offer innovations not found in other cordless systems, giving some users reason to choose Ridgid as their primary or secondary brand.

What’s Changed? Ridgid has continued to launch new 18V cordless power tools. They haven’t been as innovative as in recent years, but are still going strong. Ridgid’s 18V line continues to be exclusive to Home Depot.

Ryobi

Ryobi 18V One HP Compact Brushless Cordless Power Tool Series

Benefits: Ryobi’s 18V One+ platform is huge, and satisfies a broad range of user needs, from beginner DIYer to value-minded pros.

Downsides: Ryobi’s commitment to DIYer users (a great thing) also means they haven’t updated their battery system to a slide-style form factor yet. Lower-priced tools have compromised features or performance.

What I Said in 2021: Ryobi is a very customer-centric brand that is well-liked and well-regarded among their many loyal DIYer users. Some pros will use certain Ryobi tools as well, especially for specialty tasks where a tool might not see frequent use.

What’s Changed? Ryobi has expanded their line of compact brushless 18V One+ HP tools, and added new home, hobby, and lifestyle tools, including from a new USB Lithium line of 4V-class tools and accessories.

Ryobi tools remains exclusive to Home Depot.

Skil

Skil PWRCore 12 Brushless Drill

Benefits: Skil’s new cordless power tool platforms offer very high bang for the buck – competitive performance and above-average features for what you pay.

Downsides: Limited selection.

What I Said in 2021: Under new ownership, Skil has refreshed their branding and launched all-new cordless power tool lineups. They’re definitely worth a chance for DIYers looking to get modern features at affordable pricing.

What’s Changed? Skil has launched more tools and updated their core 12V and 20V class offerings. They have also expanded their cordless outdoor power tool offerings. With respect to core offerings – drills, drivers, and saws – Skil tools in many cases outperform competing products while also being more affordable.

Skil is definitely worth paying attention to.

I tend to get a lot of questions about beginner cordless power tool starter kits, and the conversations usually start out the same.

“I need some cordless power tools, what should I buy?” Okay, what tools do you need? “I don’t know.”

This Ryobi 12-tool combo kit looks like it could be a good answer to that question.

Ryobi 18V 12-Tool Cordless Power Tool Combo Kit Contents

This combo kit, PCL2200K3N, comes with a lot.

Here’s the full list of what you get:

  • Drill/driver
  • Impact driver
  • Impact wrench (1/2″)
  • 18 gauge brad nailer
  • Jig saw
  • Oscillating multi-tool
  • Reciprocating saw
  • Angle grinder (4-1/2″)
  • Circular saw (5-1/2″)
  • Sander
  • Miter saw (7-1/4″)
  • LED flashlight
  • 1.5Ah battery
  • 4.0Ah batteries (2)
  • Charger
  • Tool bags

I wouldn’t recommend all of these tools individually. For a circular saw, for example, I prefer 6-1/2″ or 7-1/4″ blade sizes, although Ryobi says their 5-1/2″ saw can still cut through 2x construction lumber in a single pass.

As a kit, I’d say this 12-tool combo offers much of what new homeowners, DIYers, or aspiring woodworkers might need or want.

Are there better tools? Absolutely. For the same money? Not that I can find.

Price: $599

An alternative is to buy a smaller combo kit with more premium tools.

Milwaukee M18 7-Tool Cordless Power Tool Combo Kit 2695-27S

This Milwaukee M18 7-tool cordless power tool combo kit, 2695-27S, is also a special buy right now for $499 at Home Depot.

It comes with a drill, impact driver, 6-1/2″ circular saw, compact reciprocating saw, oscillating multi-tool, angle grinder, flashlight, 2x 3.0Ah batteries, charger, and tool bag.

Milwaukee M18 8-Tool Cordless Power Tool Combo Kit 2691-28XC

There’s also this M18 8-tool cordless combo kit for $599 at Home Depot, the same as for the Ryobi 12-tool kit.

It’s very similar to the 7-tool combo kit, but with 3x 4.0Ah batteries (instead of 2x 3.0Ah), an additional tool – a 1/2″ impact wrench – and second tool bag. $100 buys you quite a bit more.

I personally prefer the “buy what I can now and expand later” approach.

But what if a beginner also wants a cordless miter saw? Milwaukee’s least expensive model, an excellent 7-1/4″ slider, is $449 by itself.

The Ryobi combo kit offers a good assortment for “I’m not sure what I’ll need” types of users.

Dewalt DCK700D1P1 20V Max 7pc Cordless Power Tool Combo Kit

Personally, I’d lean more towards this Dewalt 20V Max cordless power tool combo kit, DCK700D1P1, which is $499 at Home Depot right now. It features all-brushless tools (except for the flashlight), a compact 2.0Ah battery, and a higher capacity 5.0Ah battery.

This combo comes with a drill/driver, impact driver, 6-1/2″ circular saw, compact reciprocating saw, oscillating multi-tool, sander, and LED flashlight.

It has a mix of 20V Max Atomic and XR cordless power tools, and should handle light to medium duty tasks with comfortable ease.

Dewalt DCK648D2 20V Max 6pc Cordless Power Tool Combo Kit

Amazon has a Dewalt 20V Max 6-tool combo kit for just under $650 right now (Lowe’s has it for $749). It has upgraded XR tools – the drill, impact driver, reciprocating saw, and oscillating multi-tool – but dials back the batteries to 2x 2.0Ah compact batteries. It also skips the sander that’s included with the 7-tool combo.

The two compact batteries might be a limitation here. Home Depot has a couple of Dewalt battery promos right now – a 2-pack of 5.0Ah batteries for $149, and a bundle of 2.0Ah, 4.0Ah, and 6.0Ah batteries for $149.

The XR has better tools, but the Atomic kit comes with decent tools and a better combination of batteries.

But again, what if a beginner needs a miter saw? Jig saw? Angle grinder? Brad nailer?

The Ryobi is a safer bet for beginners or DIYers who don’t know what they might need other than “a bunch of cordless tools for projects.”

Ryobi is launching a new 40V cordless power tool battery belt, OP40HBA, allowing users to pack greater electrical energy capacity off the tool.

Basically, this means longer runtime, and the weight is carried by your body.

The two battery ports can work with all Ryobi 40V batteries.

Ryobi 40V Battery Belt OP40HBA

Additional features include a battery selector on the tool adapter, an LED indicator for showing the charge capacity status of the battery in use, adjustable shoulder strap, and a foldable design for compact storage. The shoulder straps are removable, in case you want to wear just the hip belt.

The Ryobi 40V belt power supply weighs 5 lbs (presumably without batteries).

Ryobi 40V Battery Belt OP40HBA with Cordless Leaf Blower Closeup

The power supply should work with all Ryobi 40V handheld cordless power tools.

Price: $199
ETA: June 2023

Discussion

The way I see it, there are two benefits for something like this. First, it keeps some weight off the tool, which might help reduce fatigue.

Second, maybe it’ll save you a long walk back to the charger or wherever you keep your fully charged batteries, although I’m not sure how much of a difference it will make.

The premise is that it gives you longer runtime with less interruptions.

Obviously there are some tools this probably shouldn’t be used with; it seems optimized for handheld tools, such as a cordless leaf blower. It seems like it will be very awkward to attach this to something like a cordless shop vacuum.

Ryobi USB Lithium Cordless Power Tools Mid-2023

Ryobi first announced their USB Lithium cordless power tool line in early 2022, and started expanding upon it last summer.

This new foam cutter is one of several new Ryobi hobby tools for mid-2023, with the others being a soldering pen and power scrubber kit.

The foam cutter looks highly versatile, and there’s the potential for further expandability. Maybe a hot rope cutting blade will be introduced next? Or at least, that’s what I’m hoping for.

I’m really liking what Ryobi is doing with their USB Lithium cordless tool and accessory line.

What types of compact or hobby tools do you want to see Ryobi come out with next?

Over at Home Depot, they have a bunch of “Ryobi Days” cordless power tool promotions happening right now, and this deal strikes me as being an especially good buy.

For just $99, you get a 2-pack of Ryobi 18V 4Ah batteries, plus a starter kit, AND a free tool or accessory gift with purchase.

Last winter, the same battery 2-pack was a $79 special buy for the 2022 Black Friday and holiday shopping season.

Here, for $20 more, you get a charger and a free tool.

There are 23 tools and accessories to choose from, with retail pricing of up to $189.

Ryobi Verse 18V Cordless Speaker PCL615 Attached to Workbench

For a bit more context, Ryobi recently launched their new Verse cordless speaker, which networks together to spread your music across different rooms or larger spaces. The Verse just launched in May, and is $99 for a 2-pack.

With this deal, you get the 2x batteries and charger, and can opt for a free 2-pack of these speakers.

OR, if you’re a Ryobi 18V cordless power tool user with a bench full of tools already, have you been meaning to buy more batteries? That’s one of the freebie options – a 2-pack of the same 4Ah batteries. So that would be 4x batteries plus a charger for $99.

There are 23 free gift products to choose from, including different sanders, saws, a router, cordless outdoor power tools, and more.

Deal Price: $99

There’s no indication as to when Home Depot’s “Ryobi Days” will end.

Ryobi has launched another updated 18V cordless power tool, a 10″ variable speed random orbit buffer, model PCL465.

The new Ryobi cordless buffer is designed for polishing and buffing larger surfaces, such as cars, trucks, boats, and from some of the product images, things like surfboards.

It comes with an applicator bonnet and buffing pad.

Ryobi Cordless Buffer Used to Polish Car PCL465

The cordless buffer has a variable speed dial and can achieve speeds between 2,000 and 3,600 OPM (orbits per minute).

Ryobi says you can start the buffer slower for more controlled spreading of polishing compound or wax, and then raise the speed for a clean and smooth finish.

The buffer has a multi-grip handle, as well as a vertical D-handle for comfort and control.

  • 10″ pad size
  • 2,000 – 3,600 OPM
  • Random orbit pattern
  • Up to 2-1/2 hours runtime on a single charge
  • Multi-grip handle
Ryobi Cordless Buffer PCL465K1 Kit

The new buffer will be available in tool-only (PCL465B) and kit (PCL465K1) options. The kit comes with a 4Ah battery and charger.

Price: $50 for the tool, $119 for the kit

Both are available now, exclusively at Home Depot.

Discussion

Ryobi Cordless Buffers PCL465 vs PCL435
Ryobi PCL465 vs PCL435 18V Cordless Buffers

Ryobi already has a 10″ orbital buffer in their 18V cordless power tool lineup, the P435.

Compared to the older model, the new one has the inclusion of a vertical D-handle, as well as greater coverage of the multi-grip handle.

Basically, compared to the older model, the new one has new hand-grip options at the front and rear.

The new model is presently $50 on Home Depot’s website, matching the price of the older model. There is a now-unavailable listing for a kit of the old model buffer, with 2 buffer bonnets, a single 2Ah battery, and charger, for $138. The new model’s 4Ah battery kit is lower priced at $119, not to mention better configured.

Interestingly, the older model delivered speeds up to 2,500 RPM, and runtime of up to 1-1/2 hours with a 4Ah battery. The newer model can deliver speeds of up to 3,600 RPM.

I would presume the new model’s “up to 2-1/2″ hours of runtime” spec references the 4Ah battery size included in the kit.

The polisher presumably has a brushed motor, and not brushless, which is expected at these price points. But if it delivers the as-described runtime and doesn’t bog down during use, brushless vs brushed isn’t a big deal.

Overall, it looks like Ryobi thoughtfully updated and upgraded their 18V cordless buffer, and without having to raise the price.

It appears that Ryobi is coming out with more new hand tools, or at least that’s what can be seen in images of their new Link system tool bags.

Ryobi launched new hand tools in late 2022, of the kind you wouldn’t expect for a brand known almost exclusively for cordless power tools and accessories.

The first wave of Ryobi hand tools included hand saws, screwdrivers, small mechanics tool sets, and new layout tools.

I asked Ryobi for more information at the time, and this is all they were able to say:

RYOBI is continuing to expand into the Hand Tool market with incremental categories like fastening, cutting, mechanics, storage, and more. With our commitment to the end user, RYOBI will bring over 30 innovative hand tool products to The Home Depot that will continue to empower all of our users to accomplish their projects big and small. Never get caught empty-handed with RYOBI Hand Tools.

That didn’t really tell us anything.

To be frank, I didn’t take the opening statement at face value. If they planned to “expand into the hand tool market with incremental categories,” surely there would be a bigger announcement. Right?

But as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Ryobi Tool Bag with New Hand Tools

I recently posted about new Ryobi Link storage products, which includes two tool bags whose product photos were staged with never-before-seen Ryobi hand tools.

Ryobi Pliers and Adjustable Wrenches Closeup

These look like new Ryobi hand tools to me, and real ones that were photographed, as opposed to being digital renderings.

In addition to existing tools, such as Ryobi’s screwdrivers, tape measure, and level in some of the photos, we can see new adjustable wrenches, diagonal cutters, flush cutters, Lineman’s style pliers, and Knipex Cobra-style adjustable water pump pliers.

Brands will sometimes have tool props specially made for product photography purposes. Is that what we’re seeing here?

Ryobi Link Hand Tools and Pliers Handles Closeup

Or are these early production samples from Home Depot’s next Ryobi hand tools expansion? These look to be photos of factory-produced tools to me.

Ryobi’s sibling company – Hart Tools – has many hand tools that are exclusively available at Walmart. The first wave of Ryobi hand tools at Home Depot were not quite copies of Hart tools, but the resemblances were obvious.

Here, the Ryobi pliers, cutters, and adjustable wrenches look very different from Hart’s. I couldn’t identify a likely OEM either; the Ryobi pliers and adjustable wrenches appear to be distinct.

Will these Ryobi pliers, cutters, and adjustable wrenches make it to Home Depot’s shelves? Or will they be online-only offerings, similar to Ryobi’s screwdrivers, hand saws, knives, and others? It will be interesting to see what happens.

Ryobi has announced yet another series of product expansions for their Link system of garage and mobile tool storage products.

Less than a year ago, Home Depot stores put the first wave of Ryobi Link system products on clearance. Was that the end of the new product line? I received a call from Ryobi management early on a Saturday assuring me that they had big plans for the Link system.

Ryobi announced their 2023 product expansion plans several months ago, including new tool boxes with drawers, organizers, a rolling cart, and a vertical tip-out parts organizer. Those products have not yet launched yet – they’re expected in “early 2023,” but here we are with the next series of announcements.

To sum it up, the Ryobi Link system is getting a new steel wall cabinet, wall-mounted shelves, a cooler, and tool bags, which are all expected to launch in Summer 2023.

It seems that Ryobi is very serious about this product line.

Ryobi Link Wall Mounted Cabinet (STM405)

Ryobi Link Wall Cabinet Mounted

I am surprised to see that there will be a new wall-mounted steel cabinet. It’s made from 21 gauge steel for the body, and has a weight limit of 200 lbs when directly mounted to wood studs. When mounted to Ryobi Link wall rails, the max load is 120 lbs

The cabinet features an adjustable shelf, integrated power cord access, magnetic door closure, and secure locking point for an optional padlock or similar.

Here’s a look inside the cabinet, showing how it mounts to Ryobi Link wall rails.

Assembly is required.

Specs: 26″ x 24″ x 13″

Price: $169

Ryobi Link Modular Shelving Bracket (STM460)

Ryobi Link Wall Shelves

At the heart of the new shelving system is a new Link rail-compatible bracket.

The shelving brackets can support 25 pounds each, and allow for continuous shelving runs, which we’ll get to in a moment.

Ryobi Link Shelf Bracket with Material Retaining Tab

The brackets have a material retention tab, which can be used to keep things in place.

Ryobi Link Shelf Bracket with Material Retaining Tab Holding Pipes

For instance, it allows for PVC, dowels, and rods to be stored without rolling off.

Ryobi Link Shelf Bracket Holding Lumber

Ryobi also shows brackets holding short lengths of lumber.

Price: $11.97 each

Ryobi Link 21-inch Solid Shelf (STM461)

Ryobi Link Solid Shelf in Use

The shelving system is modular. Add a pair of shelving brackets and this 21″ solid shelf, and you have a flat storage solution that can support up to 50 pounds.

As mentioned, the shelves can be connected side by side in a seamlessly modular manner. One shelf requires two brackets, and two shelves require three. This is appears to be why the shelf brackets are sold individually rather than in pairs.

Ryobi Link Solid Shelf

Ryobi says the solid shelf features a drip tray to catch any spills or messes. The shelf is raised above the Link system cleats, allowing the space underneath to accommodate hooks or other accessories.

Dimensions: 21.5″ x 12″ x 1.2″

Price: $19.97

Ryobi Link 21-inch Wire Shelf (STM462)

Ryobi Link Wire Shelf in Use

A wire shelf is also available, each with a 50 pound weight capacity.

The wire form provides added ventilation, and like the solid shelf it allows for hook access underneath.

Ryobi Link Wire Shelf

The wire shelves can also be positioned side by side in a seamless manner with the use of the same shelving brackets.

Dimensions: 21″ x 12″ x 1″

Price: $14.97

Ryobi Link 17-inch Soft Sided Cooler (STM604)

Ryobi Link Soft Cooler

The new Ryobi cooler features 24 can capacity and 24 hour ice retention. There are 3 exterior pockets, an insulated lid pocket, padded shoulder strap, and sweat-proof design.

It can be stacked on top of Ryobi Link tool boxes and mobile storage products.

Price: $59.97

Ryobi Link 17-inch Tool Bag (STM601)

Ryobi Link 17-inch Tool Bag Filled

In addition to the cooler, Ryobi will be launching two new Link system tool bags that all connect to the tops of Link mobile storage products, such as their tool boxes.

The 17″ tool bag features a 60 pound load rating and has 39 pockets for efficient organization. Its pockets are made from a 1680D material.

Ryobi Link 17-inch Tool Bag

There’s a hard side pocket for greater protection, an adjustable divider, integrated level straps, and tape measure clip.

Ryobi Link 17-inch Tool Bag Wide Mouth Opening

The U-shaped zippered opening allows for maximized storage capacity and user convenience.

From the product images, the internal divider has a looped handle and can be removed, allowing users to “grab and go” just a couple of tools if needed.

Price: $74.97

Ryobi Link 17-inch Tool Tote Bag (STM602)

Ryobi Link 17-inch Tool Tote Filled and on Tool Box

The tool tote is similar to the tool bag, but with an open top compartment.

As with the tool bag and cooler, the tool tote bag is 17″ deep and can be connected to the tops of Ryobi Link tool boxes and other mobile storage products. Two can be connected side by side, just don’t stuff the side pockets too much.

Ryobi Link 17-inch Tool Tote

The Ryobi Link tool tote bag has a 60 pound weight capacity, 42 pockets, a hard side pocket with added protection, level straps, tape measure clip, and large pivoting handle. A padded shoulder strap is included.

Price: $74.97

Ridgid just launched new 18V cordless pruning shears at Home Depot, as part of their first wave of cordless outdoor power tools.

The Ridgid cordless pruner – with jaws that resemble a smiling dinosaur – can cut branches up to 1-1/4″ thick.

Ridgid R01301 18V Cordless Pruner Cutting Branches

It features steel blades, a brushless motor, LED light, and is said to have a less than 1 second cutting cycle.

Ridgid R01301 18V Cordless Pruner

You can buy the Ridgid pruner as a bare tool ($189) or kit with 2Ah battery and charger ($229).

Ryobi 18V P2505 Cordless Pruner

Ryobi apparently quietly launched a new 18V Brushless HP cordless pruner a few months ago. It’s similar to the Ridgid, but with a 1″ cutting capacity. It also features an LED light.

The Ryobi P2505 is priced at $179 for the tool-only, and $209 with 2Ah battery and charger.

Ryobi P2504 Cordless Pruner

The Ryobi 18V cordless pruner was advertised as having a 1.5X faster cutting speed, which led me to discover the P2504 cordless pruner it’s compared to.

This model has a 3/4″ cutting capacity and more value-oriented design.

It’s priced at $149 for the tool-only, and $159 for the kit with 2Ah battery and charger.

Other Cordless Pruners

Craftsman Cordless Pruner

The Ridgid and Ryobi pricing struck me as a bit high, so I checked out competing brands.

The Craftsman V20 cordless pruner, CMCPR320C1, is $129 for the kit with 1.5Ah battery and charger. It has a 1-1/4″ cutting capacity and can make up to 900 cuts per charge.

It also has a 1 second cutting time.

Dewalt 20V Max Cordless Pruner DCPR320B

Dewalt’s 20V Max cordless pruning shears (DCPR320B) have a 1.5″ cut capacity, LED light, and its blades are finished with a non-stick coating.

The Dewalt is $129 for the tool-only.

Milwaukee M12 Brushless Pruning Shears

Milwaukee also has compact M12 cordless pruning shears coming out this year (spring 2023). Its pricing has not yet been announced. I had the opportunity to test one at a media event demo station, and really enjoyed its features and ergonomics.

Size Comparison

New Ryobi 18V Cordless Wet Dry Vacuums for 2023

Here’s a “family photo” of all three vacuums to show their comparative sizes.

To reiterate, the 1-gallon and 3-gallon vacuums are both compatible with Ryobi LINK storage rails. The 3-gallon has cleats on the bottom for connecting on top of LINK tool boxes.

I have had good experiences with some of Ryobi’s 18V cordless vacuums, and less than ideal experiences with others. One thing that can be said is that Ryobi has different models for practically every type of application or user.

Are Pros Using Ryobi Tool Boxes Yet? https://toolguyd.com/ryobi-tool-boxes-pro-jobsite-question/ https://toolguyd.com/ryobi-tool-boxes-pro-jobsite-question/#comments Mon, 06 Feb 2023 18:03:52 +0000 https://toolguyd.com/?p=101617 Ryobi Link Tool Box Combo Covered in Dirt at JobsiteHave you used or seen Ryobi Link tool boxes at the jobsite yet?]]> Ryobi Link Tool Box Combo Covered in Dirt at Jobsite

As you might be aware, Ryobi LINK is the brand’s Home Depot-exclusive modular tool box and workshop storage system.

The Ryobi Link system launched in late-2021, expanded with new accessories in mid-2022, and then additional tool box and accessories were announced in late 2022.

Many pros, contractors, and tradespeople use Ryobi cordless power tools and accessories, as the brand offers numerous versatile solutions that fit certain gaps in users’ tool needs.

But are any pros out there using Link system tool boxes yet?

In a recent social media post (embedded below), Ryobi says:

Roll into the jobsite with RYOBI LINK Mobile Storage.

Ryobi Link Tool Box Combo Rolling Through Muddy Jobsite

Their video shows a worker rolling a Link tool box combo through the dirt and into an unfinished residential jobsite.

Ryobi Link Tool Box Combo at Jobsite

This has me wondering if any pros are using Link tool boxes in such a manner yet.

Some of you are likely to say something along the lines of “hahaha, no way, never.” Okay, but why? Aesthetics? Pricing? Brand image?

Objectively speaking, their pricing is a bit high, both in comparison to competing brands’ and for what I would expect from Ryobi.

However, the specs and functionality seem reasonably competitive.

To be frank, I see Ryobi Link as a consumer and DIYer storage and organizational system. But that doesn’t mean it’s not used by pros. If pros are using Ryobi tool boxes, I’m curious to hear about their experiences.

How have the tool boxes held up, and why did you choose Ryobi Link over other brands’ modular tool box and storage systems?

Personally, I don’t expect to see pros rolling up to jobsites with Link system tool boxes, but that could potentially change. What would it take, aside from lower prices? Van and truck mounting accessories? Solutions missing from other brands’ tool box systems?

Here’s Ryobi’s “roll into the jobsite” post:

Ryobi has a New 40V Cordless Pressure Washer https://toolguyd.com/ryobi-40v-cordless-pressure-washer-ry40306btlvnm/ https://toolguyd.com/ryobi-40v-cordless-pressure-washer-ry40306btlvnm/#comments Mon, 16 Jan 2023 17:15:03 +0000 https://toolguyd.com/?p=100666 Ryobi Cordless Pressure Washer 40V RY40306BTLVNM Drawing Water from Home Depot BucketRyobi is launching a new cordless pressure washer.]]> Ryobi Cordless Pressure Washer 40V RY40306BTLVNM Drawing Water from Home Depot Bucket

Ryobi is launching a new 40V HP cordless pressure washer, RY40306BTLVNM, which will deliver up to 2000 PSI and 1.2 GPM, and matching the performance of like-sized corded electric models.

The new Ryobi cordless pressure washer features a brushless motor and is part of their “Whisper Series” of tools. It operates at 57 dB and is said to be “81% quieter than a gas pressure washer.”

Ryobi Cordless Pressure Washer 40V RY40306BTLVNM

Ryobi has cordless power cleaners, such as their 18V HP EZClean models, but as far as I have seen this is their first full-size pressure washer. There are big differences in size, pressure, and water flow.

Update: Ryobi launched a similar-looking 1500 PSI model in 2022.

For instance, Ryobi’s 18V HP EZClean cordless power cleaner delivers up to 600 PSI and 0.7 GPM, while the new 40V model can spray up to 2000 PSI and 1.2 GPM. In other words, the new pressure washer moves much more water at much higher pressure than cordless power cleaners.

As mentioned, based on specs, the new Ryobi cordless pressure washer looks to perform on-par with like-sized electric models, but without having to deal with AC outlets and extension cords.

Ryobi Cordless Pressure Washer 40V RY40306BTLVNM Accessories

The pressure washer comes with a trigger handle, spray wand, 25′ non-marring high pressure hose, 10′ siphon hose, 3 nozzles (15°, soap, turbo), and a self-priming adapter.

Ryobi Cordless Pressure Washer 40V Hero

It can draw water from either a connected water hose, or the siphon hose, which can be dropped into a bucket of clean water or any other fresh water source.

Key Features & Specs

  • Delivers up to 2000 PSI and 1.2 GPM
  • Garden hose connection
  • Siphon hose for use with bucket or other fresh water source
  • 3 adjustable pressure settings (1000 to 2000 PSI)
  • (2) active battery ports
  • Telescoping handle
  • Large wheels for mobility
  • Spray wand with 1/4″ quick-connect nozzle coupler
  • On-board accessory storage
  • 6″ wheels
  • Weighs 21.5 lbs (tool-only), ~33 lbs with batteries
  • 5-year tool warranty

Runtime expectations with 2x 6Ah batteries: 45 minutes on low mode, 27 minutes on medium, 20 on high.

Price: $449 (tool-only)
ETA: Spring 2023

The pressure washer will be available exclusively at Home Depot.

Update: The new 2000 PSI pressure washer will be sold alongside an existing similar-looking 40V 1500 PSI model, which as of the time of this posting retails at $629 for a kit with 2x 6Ah batteries and a charger,

Discussion

Ryobi press materials mention “(2) active battery ports.” Does this mean that it can automatically switch between batteries when one is depleted, or does it require two 40V batteries to operate?

If it requires two batteries to operate, that would greatly raise the entry price for newcomers to Ryobi’s 40V cordless power tool system.

The pressure washer has a $449 starting price, and if you need two batteries and a charger, that’s another $449 for the 2x 6Ah starter kit. If you get a 4Ah single battery starter kit ($229) and second 4Ah or 5Ah battery ($189), that’s still $418.

However, existing Ryobi 40V cordless outdoor power tool users might find the tool-only price to be more accessible.

Still, it’s great to see Ryobi expanding their 40V line, especially in a direction most other cordless power tool brands haven’t stepped towards or even looked at yet.

Follow-up

Ryobi replied: Only 1 battery is required for operation. 2 active battery ports simply means the customer can use either port if they only have 1 battery available. All sizes of 40V batteries fit into this tool.

That makes sense, and with runtime claims of 20 minutes on high and 45 on low with 2x 6Ah batteries, I can understand why there are 2 battery ports.

Additionally, Ryobi says that this model will be sold alongside the existing model. In other words, they will offer both 1500 PSI and 2000 PSI pressure washer models in the 40V cordless platform.

I visited my closest Home Depot store last week, on 12/31/22, and was surprised to see how many Ryobi tools were still piled up in the gift center.

I always find it interesting to see which tools are left unsold after every holiday shopping season.

There were stacks of Ryobi cordless power tools still in stock. According to their online inventory, my 5 closest stores each have between 25 and 34 of the Ryobi 18V HP+ cordless drill and impact driver combo kit still in stock. They have 143 kits between those 5 stores.

With many promos still ongoing thru the end of January, the holiday shopping season technically isn’t over yet.

Home Depot Unsold Ryobi Miter Saws and Stands from Holiday 2022

There are plenty of miter saws, too.

My closest Home Depot store has 35 of the Ryobi 15A 10″ sliding miter saw still in stock. It’s still eligible for a free stand promo thru January 30th, 2023.

The 5 closest stores have a combined 135 miter saws in stock.

Home Depot Unsold Ryobi Hobby Tools and Accessories from Holiday 2022

My Home Depot has a lot of unsold Ryobi hobby tools, mainly rotary tools and accessory sets.

Home Depot Unsold Ryobi Hobby Tools from Holiday 2022

They seem to have sold some of the USB battery-powered tools, but the shelves are far from empty.

Looking at a couple more tools online, with inventory numbers as reported via HomeDepot.com at the time of this posting:

Ryobi Compact Table Saw – 4,318 available for delivery
Ryobi 10″ Sliding Miter Saw – 6,291 available for delivery
Ryobi 18V 4-Tool Combo Kit – 5,399 available for delivery
Ryobi 18V Impact Wrench Kit – 6,131 available for delivery
Ryobi 18V 4-Tool Cordless Hobby Tool Kit – 2,564 available for delivery

Some of these promos are good tools at great deals. The hobby tool kit, for instance, comes with a cordless rotary tool, sander, router, glue gun, charger, and 2 batteries, and you get another 2 batteries as a free gift, all for $159.

Other brands still have many unsold tools too. My closest Home Depot store has a whopping 182 Dewalt 20V Max Atomic drill and impact driver combo kits still in stock. My second-closest store has 34, and another nearby has 146 kits. Home Depot’s website is reporting 2,010 available for delivery.

While I wasn’t tempted to buy any Ryobi tools at their holiday promos, I will most certainly keep an eye out for any steep markdowns or clearance prices. Hopefully the Ryobi rotary tool accessories will be discounted at the least.

It seems that Home Depot chose Ryobi over Dremel for their hobby tool promos this year. (I also didn’t see any Dremel rotary tool Black Friday or holiday promos at Lowe’s.) I wonder; even with everything that’s left over, did Ryobi sell better than Dremel would have?

What happens now? Will there be additional markdowns throughout the month? Will these tools go on clearance?

What are things like at your Home Depot stores?

Home Depot added another tool box system to their holiday deals center this year – Ryobi Link – where they’ve also been featuring Ridgid Pro Gear tool box deals.

Ryobi Link Tool Box Combos at Home Depot for Black Friday 2022

At Home Depot stores, they recently had Black Friday and holiday gift center promo displays advertising the Ryobi Link 3pc tool box combo for $149.

The displays also list prices for the individual components.

Home Depot’s early Black Friday 2022 sales flyer also advertised the Ryobi 3pc tool box combo in a similar manner.

In all promotional materials, the Ryobi Link 3pc tool box combo is specifically advertised as a special buy for $149.

Ridgid Pro Gear 2 Tool Box Components at Home Depot for Black Friday 2022

The new Ridgid Pro 2.0 tool boxes are on sale, but Home Depot is only adverting them a la carte, which is a break from the trend.

The promotional signage shows a Ridgid 3pc combo, but only with prices for each individual tool box component.

Interestingly, the tool boxes are stacked together, as if they were intended to be sold as complete 3pc combos.

Why does the Ryobi signage have component pricing as well as a 3pc combo price, while the Ridgid signage only has component pricing?

Home Depot’s early Black Friday 2022 sales ad also shows the 3pc combo, but only with individual prices for the separate components.

Home Depot 2021 Black Friday Display of Ridgid Pro Tool Boxes

Looking at a photo I took of last year’s sales floor display, Home Depot advertised the Ridgid tool boxes individually, as well as a 3pc combo.

Home Depot 2021 Black Friday sales flyer featuring Ridgid Pro tool box combo

In their Black Friday sales flyer last year, Home Depot advertised the Ridgid 3pc Pro tool box combo for $119.

I should point out that this year’s promo features the new Ridgid 2.0 Pro gear tool boxes.

Home Depot’s 2020 sales flyer also advertised the Ridgid 3pc tool box combo setup.

Ridgid’s tool box combo was also advertised as a 3pc combo in 2019.

I’m sure you get the point by now – Home Depot broke from tradition and didn’t advertise the 3pc combo pricing this year.

Home Depot launched the Ridgid tool box system in late 2014, and has advertised Ridgid 3pc tool box combos in their Black Friday sales ads every year, going back all the way to 2015.

In other words, Home Depot has always advertised Ridgid 3pc tool box combo pricing for 7 years in a row, and then decided to only advertise component prices in this year’s Black Friday and holiday gift center promotional materials.

Why do things differently this year?

Ridgid 3pc Pro Gear Tool Box Combo at Home Depot Holiday 2022

Looking at Home Depot’s online store, they actually do have bundle pricing where you can get the Ridgid 3pc tool box combo for $139, which is 91 cents less than buying the components separately at their current “special buy” pricing.

So, Home Depot does have a bundle offer where you can get the Ridgid Pro 2.0 tool box combo for $139, but this wasn’t advertised in the Black Friday sales flyer, and I have not seen it at stores either.

The way Home Depot is advertising the two systems, you can get the Ryobi Link 3pc combo for $149, or the Ridgid Pro Gear 2.0 combo for $29.97 + $39.98 + $69.97.

Interesting…

I should also point out that the Ryobi Link combo gives you a rolling tool box, medium tool box, and open tote, while the Ridgid combo gives you a rolling tool box, medium tool box, and small tool box.

Ridgid’s crate retails for $29.97, while their new small tool box (currently a $29.97 special buy) has a regular retail price of $39.97.

Ryobi’s Link crate retails for $39.97 regularly while their small tool box is regularly $49.97.

Objectively speaking, open tote boxes are often less expensive than small tool boxes, and with all things considered equal, I’d say the Ridgid 3pc combo with a top tool box offers more value than the Ryobi 3pc combo with a top crate, and at a lower price.

Ryobi Link Tool Box Display at Home Depot in December 2022

As an aside, I visited my local Home Depot stores recently last week, and they still had an abundance of Ryobi Link tool boxes in their holiday deals and gift center. Actually, they had an abundance of many different tool deals and special buys. Are shoppers waiting for mid-season price-drops or clearance pricing?

Which 3pc tool box combo would you buy, the Ryobi at $149, or the Ridgid at $139?

I bought the Ridgid tool boxes individually at their regular pricing (mainly for review purposes), as soon as I learned of the new 2.0 Pro Gear products, and have been impressed so far.

Even without having great things to say about Ridgid tool boxes (original and 2.0), I think most people would lean towards Ridgid – as I certainly would.

Ryobi Link vs Ridgid Pro Gear Black Friday 2022 Home Depot Displays

Perhaps that’s why the Ryobi Link tool box combo is advertised as being $149, while the Ridgid 3pc combo is indirectly depicted as being $29.97 + $39.98 + $69.97.

This could of course just be a coincidence, with no correlation between how the two brands’ tool box deals are advertised. What do you think?

Home Depot and Lowe’s have many competing tool box deals right now. Here, we’re going to focus on the medium-price-point deals from Ryobi, Ridgid, and Kobalt.

Ryobi Link Tool Box Combos at Home Depot for Black Friday 2022

To start off, Home Depot has the Ryobi Link 3pc tool box combo stack for $149. It comes with a rolling tool box, a large tool box, and an open tote.

I looked it over briefly, and it seemed… alright.

Ryobi Link Tool Boxes at Home Depot for Black Friday 2022

You can buy the Ryobi Link system components separately, or as a 3pc tool box combo.

Ridgid Pro Gear 2 Tool Box Components at Home Depot for Black Friday 2022

Home Depot also has the new Ridgid Pro Gear 2.0 tool box system.

I bought a couple of the next-gen Ridgid tool boxes in order to test them by Black Friday. I don’t have a review up yet, but I’ve seen enough to be able to say this is my favorite tool box deal of the season.

You get the rolling tool box for $70, the large tool box for $40, or the smaller tool box for $30. You can buy all 3 for just $140, compared to the $180 I spent in August and September when I tracked down all 3 pieces at separate stores.

Basically, if you get all 3 pieces, it’s like you’re buying the rolling tool box and large middle tool box and getting the small tool box for free. But with this year’s promo, everything is discounted by a bit, which is nice.

I LOVE the Ridgid Gen 2 rolling tool box, where the rolling hand cart part is completely detachable!

What’s completely surprising is that you can get the Ridgid Pro Gear 2.0 tool box combo for $139.91, while the Ryobi system is $149.

I feel that the Ridgid tool box combo is much better than what the Ryobi Link special offers – and it’s less expensive too!

If you want a more comparable tool box combo from Ryobi link, it’s $209.91 at the time of this posting, which is more than the Ridgid Pro Gear combo at full price!

You can buy all of the Ridgid components via Home Depot’s website, even with free shipping! The Ryobi Link system looks to be an online-only special.

I would buy the Ridgid Gen 2 tool boxes. The first generation were a great value, and the newest Pro Gear tool boxes offer additional features, while also being backwards compatible.

Ridgid Pro Gear 2 Compact Organizer Tool Box

My local store put out a display of the new Ridgid 2.0 compact organizer this week.

It’s a bit pricey, but felt solid and versatile. I picked up a pair for review.

My only niggle is that the handle is optimized for connection to other Ridgid modular tool box products, and so it’s not as comfortable to carry as standalone organizers which have full-size handles.

At the time of this posting, the Ridgid Gen 2 compact organizer is $25, and only available in stores.

Kobalt CaseStack Tool Box Combos at Lowes for Black Friday 2022

I finally found the Kobalt CaseStack tool boxes at my local Lowe’s store!

Kobalt CaseStack Tool Box Stack at Lowes for Black Friday 2022

I pulled a Kobalt CaseStack out of the bay to check out its features. While everything seems pretty standard, there was nothing special.

Ryobi’s Link system can be mounted to their special hex-cleat wall panels. Ridgid’s new tool boxes come with wall-mountable hooks.

The Kobalt CaseStack tool boxes seemed okay, but I wasn’t very impressed for the money. Why choose Lowe’s Kobalt tool box system over other brands?

This is combo is $199 at the moment, and will be $159 for Black Friday 2022 as per Lowe’s latest sales ad.

Kobalt CaseStack Tool Box Broken Wheel

I only pulled one Kobalt tool box stack out for inspection, nd found a broken wheel.

I would say that this doesn’t leave me with much confidence for the brand’s quality, but it can happen to any brand. Maybe the box fell off the truck? Maybe the entire stack fell off racking?

Which Would I Buy?

Ridgid Pro Gear 2.0.

Why should anyone spend more for Ryobi Link? Why should anyone spend more for Kobalt CaseStack? The Ridgid tool boxes feel as sturdy as their predecessors.

I won’t be hanging the Ridgid system on my wall, but I suppose it’s good to have that option. The rolling tool box is the star of the show for me, since you can remove its dolly for easier transport or storage.

If you’re in the market for a new value-priced modular tool box system, try to check them out at your local store. Connect a couple of tool boxes together, roll it around the aisle, and test how easy it is to latch or disconnect tool boxes from each other.

The Ridgid Pro Gear 2.0 system is NOT my favorite – I’m more a fan of Milwaukee Packout and even Dewalt ToughSystem 2.0, but it’s a great system at a good value.

Surprisingly, the Ridgid set up is also the Least expensive of all three, at just under $140 for the 3pc combo, vs. $149 for Ryobi Link, or $159 for the Kobalt CaseStack system (starting on Thanksgiving).

I was scouting out the Black Friday 2022 tool deals at Home Depot when I came across a new Ryobi hobby hand tool kit deal.

Price at $25, this kit comes with a couple of hobby tools, none of which I would expect to see from Ryobi of all brands.

Ryobi has been trying to make a push into the hobby tool market recently, but this was still completely unexpected.

Ryobi Rotary Tool Accessory Deals at Home Depot for Black Friday 2022

Ryobi had a large and rather impressive showing of cordless and AC-powered hobby tools, including rotary tool accessories.

Curiously, I didn’t see any Dremel rotary tools or hobby tools included in either Home Depot or Lowe’s gift centers this year, at least not yet.

Ryobi Rotary Tool Deals at Home Depot for Black Friday 2022

There were corded rotary tools on the end of the hobby tool deals floor display.

I actually missed the hobby hand tools kit during my first couple of visits to different Home Depot stores’ holiday season deal and gift centers these past 3 weeks.

But, I’m glad I caught it during my last visit.

Ryobi Hobby Tool Kit

The Ryobi hobby hand tools kit, model RHTK101, comes with a hobby knife, tweezers, 6pc screwdriver set, and a pouch to store it all in.

Ryobi Hobby Knife Blade Cutting Against Ruler

The hobby knife definitely looks very different compared to the hobby knives I’m used to, from brands such as X-Acto and Excel.

Ryobi Hobby Knife Blade Change

It has a very different blade change mechanism, too, which Ryobi says is 50% faster.

Ryobi Mini Screwdriver End Cap

The precision screwdrivers have rotating end caps, for better control, and clear size and style identification.

Ryobi Tweerzers Curved Tip

You also get curved-tipped tweezers, of course with Ryobi’s signature lime-green color.

Ryobi Tweerzers Curved Tip with Removable Silicone Tips

The tweezers come with removable silicone tips.

Ryobi Zippered Tool Bag

Lastly, the kit also comes with a zippered tool pouch.

They’re selling the zippered pouch separately, which is why the product image shows it wet with a “durable water resistant material” claim. Or, maybe some people like to toss their hobby tools into a zippered bag and leave it out in the rain.

The hobby knife and screwdriver set are also available separately.

Price: $25

Also Available Separately:

Ryobi Hobby Knife – $9.97
Ryobi 6pc Screwdriver Set – $6.97
Ryobi 12″ Zippered Tool Bag – $6.97

I suppose I shouldn’t have been too surprised, as new Ryobi hand tools appeared on Home Depot’s website earlier this year, but these are the first I’ve seen in person.

If you’re looking for a new hobby knife, also check out the USA-made Excel soft-grip hobby knife, which usually sells for less than $9 at Amazon.
