Craftsman has announced a new line of V-Series metal storage products that are “built for the Pro” and made in the USA with global materials.

Like the Craftsman V-Series tools that launched in 2021, the new storage products are built for more demanding users.

The new Craftsman V-Series storage products will launch in 3 sizes, starting with a 63-inch mobile workstation and followed by chests and roller cabinets in 41-inch and 52-inch widths.

Note: Craftsman is a ToolGuyd sponsor.

Craftsman Design Philosophy

Kelly Domino, Group Product Manager at Stanley Black & Decker, said:

We were very intentional when designing CRAFTSMAN V-Series Tool Storage to ensure we built a high-quality box that delivered everything the Pro needs to make their job easy. From ample storage space to security to integrated power to suspension loaded casters and more, we’ve got them covered.

Craftsman V-Series Storage Features

Craftsman V-Series Mobile Workstation 63-inch Size

The first of the new line of Craftsman V-Series tool storage products, a 63-inch mobile workstation, CMSTVS6311BK, is described as being suitable for a master mechanic.

It features (11) full-extension soft-close ball bearing drawers – (9) that can each support up to 150 lbs, and (2) that can support up to 200 lbs.

Craftsman V-Series Mobile Workstation with Open Top Drawer Filled with Tools

The top full-width drawer has double slides for up to 200 lbs of load capacity.

Craftsman V-Series Mobile Workstation with Deep Bottom Drawer

The deep bottom drawer has double ball bearing slides for higher load capacity, and can fit bulky tools or equipment. As depicted in the product imagery, it’s a good fit for power tools.

Craftsman V-Series Mobile Workstation Wood Top

The top worksurface is made from 2/3″ butcher block.

Craftsman V-Series Mobile Workstation Spring-Loaded Casters

The workstation has (4) 6-inch x 2-inch casters, each with a spring suspension. This is a feature not normally found on consumer tool storage products.

Casters with spring suspensions typically provide for more cushioned rolling over a workshop floor. In my experience, they also provide better support on uneven floors, where casters without suspensions might not all make full contact.

The workstation can support up to 3,000 lbs.

Craftsman V-Series Mobile Workstation Side with Handle and Power Strip

The workstation has a built-in power strip, with (6) AC outlets and (2) USB charging ports.

Craftsman V-Series Mobile Workstation Tubular Lock with Keys

A keyed tubular locking system helps to keep your tools secure.

Craftsman V-Series Mobile Workstation Drawer Liners

The workstation comes with a set of pre-cut embossed drawer liners.

The 63-inch workstation is available now, and the 41-inch and 52-inch V-series metal storage products will be launching in Fall 2023.

MSRP: $1,799 for the 63-inch workstation, $2,398 for the 41-inch cabinet and chest combo, and $2,798 for the 52-inch cabinet and chest combo.

Digging Deeper

Craftsman’s V-Series metal storage products feature increased depth compared to their S2000 series line, to 21″. Additionally, it offers higher load capacity, with 150-200 lb drawer slides compared to 100 lb for the S2000 series.

The V-Series storage products are built with I-frame construction and 16/18 gauge steel for the top, bottom, and sides depending on the part and strength required. Steel as thick as 14 gauge is used in the construction.

They also ship fully assembled, which will be appreciated by anyone who has had to install casters to a large roller cabinet or mobile workstation before.

Craftsman highlights that the new V-Series storage products have industrial quality casters and drawer slides, and the increased size and capacity to suit Pro end user needs.

Craftsman Made in USA Tool Sets are Finally Available! https://toolguyd.com/craftsman-made-in-usa-tool-sets-lowes-2023/ https://toolguyd.com/craftsman-made-in-usa-tool-sets-lowes-2023/#comments Sat, 22 Jul 2023 20:14:04 +0000 https://toolguyd.com/?p=107675 Craftsman Made in USA Mechanics Tool Set at LowesThe 88pc and 59pc tool sets are now available.]]> Craftsman Made in USA Mechanics Tool Set at Lowes

New Craftsman made in USA mechanics tool sets, advertised as being forged in Texas, are finally available at Lowe’s.

The Craftsman 88pc tool set, CMMT45018, has appeared at Lowe’s stores nationwide and are also available online.

Readers have also reported finding the new USA-made sets at Exchange stores.

Craftsman Made in USA Mechanics Tool Set at Lowes CMMT45018 on Floor

At Lowe’s stores, the Craftsman tool sets might be in different locations. My closest store put the 88pc tool set out on the floor – literally – near the usual Craftsman mechanics tool sets.

Another Lowe’s store had a promotional display near the entrance, as shown at the top of the post. I learned of one store that placed their Craftsman tool set promotional display in the lumber aisle.

Craftsman CMMT45018 Mechanics Tool Set Contents in Case

The 88pc set comes with 1/4″ and 3/8″ ratchets with 90T gearing and quick release feature, shallow and deep sockets (6pt), a couple of drive accessories, a screwdriver handle, screwdriver bits, and hex keys.

Craftsman CMMT45018 Mechanics Tool Set Contents

According to the packaging, the ratchet, sockets, and wrenches are made in the USA from global materials, and the other tools are made in Taiwan.

Price: $69.98

You might have an easier time ordering online; I had to do a lot of legwork to find the 88pc set in person.

I purchased a test sample, and while not perfect (e.g. the 3/8″ ratchet has a chrome defect), the tool quality seems to be good for the price.

Craftsman CMMT45016 Mechanics Tool Set Contents

Craftsman also has a smaller 59pc set, CMMT45016, with 3/8″ ratchet, sockets, screwdriver handle, and bits.

Price: $49.98

Craftsman 59pc Made in Texas USA Mechanics Tool Set at Lowes on Shelf

Lowe’s website reports that my closest store has 7 of the 59pc set available for delivery or free pickup within 3 hours, but I was unable to purchase a set in person.

The Lowe’s associates first told me the sets couldn’t be sold until Q3. When I asked when that would be, they said a quarter is every 3 months. Doesn’t Q3 start in July?

Then, they said that “oh, it’ll take 20 minutes to get it down because it’s on a pallet.” And then, “if we take it down and there’s a store inspection we’ll get in a lot of trouble.”

They told me to “come back in August.”

Both sets can be purchased via Lowe’s website, and so it’s not clear why they wouldn’t sell me the tool set at the store itself. This has never happened to me at Home Depot.

Hopefully you won’t run into the same obstacles.

The two mechanics tool sets – 88pc and 59pc – are both “limited time buys,” in the most literal sense possible. These tools are not being produced anymore, and so once they sell out, they won’t be restocked.

Dozens of these USA-made Craftsman tool sets have already popped up on Ebay, with prices as high as $250.

Best Cordless Power Tool Brands (2023) https://toolguyd.com/best-cordless-power-tool-brand/ https://toolguyd.com/best-cordless-power-tool-brand/#comments Thu, 20 Jul 2023 00:12:00 +0000 https://toolguyd.com/?p=107594 Dewalt vs Milwaukee Cordless ScrewdriversWhich is the best cordless power tool brand? Let's talk about them all.]]>
Dewalt vs Milwaukee Cordless Screwdrivers

Which is the BEST cordless power tool brand? Dewalt? Milwaukee? Ryobi? This seems like a simple question, but the answer isn’t.

I last attempted to tackle this question in early 2021, and there have been enough developments and changes in the 2-1/2 years since then to justify an update.

Here is the question that started it all:

If you had to stick to one brand for most of your tools which would it be? Taking into consideration tool reliability, power, ergonomics, batteries and number of cordless tools.

Just one brand?! Dewalt. Wait, no – Milwaukee. Metabo HPT?

Most cordless power tool brands have their distinct innovations and selling points, and tool brands continuously and fiercely compete for a spot in your tool box.

Whether the question is about the best cordless power tool brand overall, or even which one brand I would stick with, the answer depends on the user.

Are you an electrician? Plumber? Carpenter? Deck builder? DIYer? Every user’s needs are different, and there’s really no singular best brand overall.

The real question to answer is this one – which is the best cordless tool brand for you?

Instead of simply answering the title question, I will offer my opinions on each particular tool brand to help you make your own determinations.

As always, readers’ opinions are extremely valuable. What would you say to anyone looking to buy into a cordless power tool system?

The brands below are listed in alphabetical order.

Bosch

Bosch AmpShare 18V Battery

Benefits: Good performance and reliability.

Downsides: Historically, Bosch has not kept up with competitors in the USA, and some innovations are released here later than in Europe or not at all.

What I Said in 2021: Bosch makes some spectacular tools. Looking at the greater picture, their 12V and 18V platforms aren’t as compelling as competing platforms. While I was impressed with some of their past releases, there are fewer reasons to buy into either of Bosch’s cordless power tool systems today.

What’s Changed? Bosch recently launched AmpShare, where their 18V battery will soon power a range of tools from numerous partnered brands. They have been releasing new tools at a faster pace, and also seem to have abandoned the somewhat silly names given to certain tools, such as “the Freak.”

Bosch still has holes in their cordless lineup, but they’ve been filling some of the more glaring ones. I anticipate that AmpShare will greatly help with this.

Craftsman

Craftsman V20 4pc Cordless Power Tool Combo Kit

Benefits: Affordable price points for DIYers.

Downsides: Limited selection.

What I Said in 2021: Craftsman has been slow to expand their V20/20V Max cordless power tool lineup, but there are some interesting entries, such as a cordless air compressor.

What’s Changed? Craftsman has steadily been expanding their line of V20 cordless power tools, but still not at anywhere close to the pace of their top competitor. Their Brushless RP tools offer higher performance.

Dewalt

Dewalt Power Detect Cordless Power Tools

Benefits: Excellent tools, expansive selection, comfortable ergonomics, great reliability. Dewalt has been continually expanding their 20V Max cordless power tool lineup, as well as their FlexVolt lineup, and they have also been actively expanding their 12V Max Xtreme Subcompact line.

Downsides: Sorting through some of their core options can be a little confusing. For instance, you can now choose between 20V Max brushless, 20V Max Power Detect, FlexVolt 60V Max, and 20V Max FlexVolt advantage saws.

What I Said in 2021: Dewalt continues to have a lot of “firsts.” They’re no longer playing catch-up and are once again pushing boundaries.

Quite simply put, you cannot go wrong with Dewalt cordless power tools. Dewalt’s cordless platforms continue to have a lot of strengths, and few weaknesses.

If I had to choose a “Best Cordless Power Tool Brand Overall” winner, Dewalt would face off against Milwaukee in a battle too close to easily call.

What’s Changed? Dewalt has entered the automotive tool market with new ratchets, and recently launched new rivet tools. They’ve been filling noticeable holes. Dewalt’s PowerStack batteries provide numerous benefits over older technologies.

Notable Products: Power Detect and FlexVolt Advantage lines bridge the gap between 20V Max and FlexVolt 60V Max platforms. Even so, FlexVolt still provides a power benefit that most other 18V/20V Max systems struggle to match.

Festool

Festool 18V Cordless Power Tools

Benefits: Unique tools, such as hybrid corded-cordless sanders, good quality, brand reputation.

Downsides: Very limited product selection, very high pricing.

What I Said in 2021: If you want a Festool power tool, and you want it to be cordless, you have some options. Festool made a push in 2020 to consolidate some of their cordless power tools into combo kits aimed at contractors and remodelers.

Festool’s cordless platforms are limited, presumably because they are more of a finish and fine work brand. The brand is not focused on the broader needs of users involved in construction or the trades.

Additionally, Festool’s high pricing can make the tools inaccessible to many individual users.

What’s Changed? Festool has made some questionable design choices, such as launching a cordless dust collector vacuum that can only be used with smaller low capacity batteries. There’s also a new cordless reciprocating saw, which fills a hole in their cordless lineup, but doesn’t seem to be in the spirit of the brand’s core competency – fine finishing tools.

Flex

Flex 24V Max 6-Tool Cordless Power Tool Combo Kit

Benefits: Competitive performance (at least), next-gen Stacked Lithium batteries, numerous innovations and tools with distinct user benefits.

Downsides: As a relatively new brand, Flex is going to be playing catch-up for a few years, in terms of product selection and market share. Their 24V battery is going to be slightly larger than 18V batteries, but not without positive traits (such as in power delivery).

Overall: Flex has expanded their line of 24V Max brushless cordless power tools at a rapid pace. The brand recently launched new compact core tools, and a strong selection of specialty tools, such as a cordless router, sander, and band saws.

Flex aspires to be a major player in the professional cordless power tool industry, and so far it seems they’re doing everything right to get there.

Hart

Walmart Hart Tools Black Friday 2020 Tool Deals Hero

What I Said in 2021: Hart is a Walmart-exclusive brand that offers entry-priced cordless power tools that are similar to Ryobi’s most basic offerings. If you’re shopping for the lowest cost cordless power tools on the market, I’d go with Hart (or any of these other brands) over the no-name stuff on Amazon and other online marketplaces.

What’s Changed? Hart doesn’t share product news, but it looks like they added a couple of new tools since I last checked. Hart still looks to be an entry-level cordless brand aimed at beginners or Walmart shoppers buying on impulse.

Hercules (Harbor Freight)

New Harbor Freight Hercules Cordless Power Tools Coming Soon Starting Q42019

Benefits: Better cordless tools for Harbor Freight shoppers.

Downsides: Limited selection, young brand reputation, still Harbor Freight.

What I Said in 2021: Harbor Freight launched the Hercules cordless power tool platforms with name-brand competitors in sight. I purchased earlier samples, and while respectable, the tools lacked the fit and finish I would expect from true professional-grade cordless power tool brands.

Harbor Freight and their Hercules line have potential, but it seems they are still striving to make cheaper tools. With new brushless tools on the way, it’s possible they are trying to walk down a different path, at least as far as the Hercules lines are concerned.

Harbor Freight has the potential to disrupt the core cordless power tools market, but they still have to prove they can deliver quality.

What’s Changed? Harbor Freight has been steadily expanding their Hercules lineup of “professional” tools. The quality seems to have improved – from pretty good to almost great – and the tools now boast a 5 year limited warranty.

Harbor Freight has been bouncing between different marketing strategies, and with the latest changes they’ve been following examples set by major industry players.

The tools are not quite on even ground with those from the tool brands Harbor Freight claims Hercules compares to, but they are inching closer.

Hilti

Hilti-Nuron-Cordless-Power-Tool-Platform

Benefits: Strong reputation, gimmick-free solutions.

Downsides: Limited retail availability, limited tool selection, high prices.

What I Said in 2021: Hilti tends to target commercial users, rather than individuals. They have a strong focus on masonry tools, but also some exceptionally capable tools for working with wood, metal, and other common construction and fabrication materials.

What’s Changed? Hilti launched Nuron, a new line of 22V cordless power tools. While not as comprehensive as competing professional tool brands’ lineups, Hilti quickly converted over dozens of tools from the outgoing tool system. There are still a lot of holes that need to be filled.

Hilti still needs to do a better job at appealing to individual tool users.

Kobalt

Kobalt 24V Next-Generation 4-Tool Cordless Combo Kit

Benefits: Brushless motors, inexpensive pricing on spare/replacement batteries.

Downsides: Limited selection.

What I Said in 2021: Lowe’s Kobalt 24V max cordless power tool platform focuses on brushless-motor tools, and with reasonable and competitive pricing.

There’s not much compromise when it comes to performance, and the newer XTR tools take things to another level with respect to power and features.

What’s Changed? Kobalt launched all-new core cordless power tools. They seemed to have all but dropped the XTR performance line of tools, except during holiday shopping seasons when the combos make a quick reappearance.

Lowe’s never seems to have a clear direction in mind for their exclusive tool brand.

Makita

Makita Outdoor Adventure Cordless Power Tools 2022

Benefits: Broad 18V cordless power tool system.

Downsides: Makita has been slow to adapt to industry trends, and certain product categories are difficult to sort out with an excessive number of options. The 18V line hasn’t kept up with competing tool systems, and the new XGT line is very limited and expensive. Their revamped 12V Max cordless system has been stagnant.

What I Said in 2021: Some of Makita’s 18V LXT cordless tools are competitive, but the system has hit its limits. The new Makita XGT 40V Max platform is due to launch in the USA at some point, but the new system is not backwards compatible with their 18V cordless system.

What’s Changed? Makita has finally brought a couple of tools from the XGT line to the LXT line, but many premium features remain XGT exclusives, such as cordless drill anti-kickback tech.

Makita launched Outdoor Adventure in the USA, a new line of existing 18V tools but in an olive green color.

They have two main cordless systems – 18V LXT and 36V/40V Max XGT, and aren’t throwing their full weight behind either one.

Makita USA recently cut jobs company-wide, following their third price increase in just over a year.

Metabo

Metabo 12V Cordless Drill with Quick Chuck

Benefits: Great quality, performance, and reliability, and a strong reputation. Metabo offers more specialty tools that cater to fabrication and metalworking industries.

Downsides: Limited selection, less market availability and visibility compared to other pro-grade brands,

What I Said in 2021: Metabo has a lot of great cordless power tools, and has been expanding steadily. Its 18V cordless platform is more expansive in Europe, but an increasing number of tools have launched in the USA as well.

Metabo has embarked on a mission towards enabling a truly cordless jobsite, and each year they move closer and closer to that goal.

What’s Changed? Metabo used to do their part in driving the industry forward, but lately it seems like they’ve been falling behind. Where’s the cordless table saw, dust collection systems, air compressor, or other tools needed for the “cordless jobsite” they talked so much about over the years?

Metabo HPT (Formerly Hitachi Power Tools)

Metabo HPT Sub-Compact Cordless Drill and Impact Driver

Benefits: Metabo HPT offers many excellent-quality 18V and MultiVolt cordless power tools, and occasionally innovates with unique offerings.

Downsides: Limited selection, Hitachi to Metabo HPT name-change has resulted in quite a bit of confusion. There’s added confusion between Metabo HPT and Metabo, as there is zero compatibility between the two brands’ cordless platforms.

What I Said in 2021: As a system, Metabo HPT offers a much smaller selection of cordless power tools than other brands. They have quite a few competitive and compelling tools, making the brand a potentially good choice if their strengths align with particular user needs and wants.

What’s Changed? Metabo HPT has been releasing new tools at a steady pace. Their MultiVolt cordless platform is excellent, and remains a very competitive choice. The brand needs greater market visibility; select tools are available at Lowe’s, but the retailer has done little to promote the brand or drive consumer awareness.

Notable Products: Metabo HPT’s 18V Triple Hammer impact driver remains a personal favorite.

Milwaukee

Milwaukee M18 Cordless Power Tool Combo Kit and Packout Rolling Tool Box Promo 2018

Benefits: Great quality, reliability, and performance. Fantastic M18 (18V/20V-class) cordless power tool system and unmatched M12 (12V-class) tool selection. Milwaukee Tool is a very active innovator.

Downsides: M12 tools have a stem-style battery that inserts into the hand grip, resulting in a chunkier grip than some other brands can accomplish with slide-style batteries.

What I Said in 2021: Milwaukee seeks to be a “solutions provider,” and they charge into new markets with a disruptive ferocity. Their philosophy for the M12 cordless system has been to provide user-friendly alternatives to hand tools, and their expanding M18 system offers all the core tools pros and demanding users might need, plus many trade-specific options.

Milwaukee Tool cordless power tools can carry premium pricing, but they regularly offer very aggressive promotions in the form of free tool or battery bonus bundles.

While not the market-leader in every category, Milwaukee is an easy recommendation. Quite simply put, you can’t go wrong with Milwaukee cordless power tools.

If I absolutely had to choose a “Best Cordless Power Tool Brand Overall” winner, Milwaukee would face off against Dewalt in a battle too close to easily call.

What’s Changed? Milwaukee has continued to innovate and push forward in recent years. I expect to see the brand shake up the entire industry once they launch – and heavily advertise – next-gen power tool batteries built with pouch-style Li-ion cells.

The MX Fuel line of cordless equipment redefined what can be powered with a cordless battery, and still holds untapped potential.

Notable Products: Milwaukee’s M12 Fuel and M18 Fuel brushless power tools are often considered the gold standard.

Porter Cable

Porter Cable PCC601LB Cordless Drill Kit

Benefits: None.

Downsides: Limited selection, limited availability.

What I Said in 2021: Porter Cable was effectively pushed out of Lowe’s when Craftsman (also a Stanley Black & Decker brand) came along, and out of Walmart after TTI launched their exclusive Hart tool brand there.

Porter Cable announced a new partnership with Tractor Supply in late-2021. No new tools or developments have been announced since then.

The brand doesn’t appear to be investing any time, effort, or resources into their cordless platform.

What’s Changed? Nothing.

Ridgid

Ridgid New Cordless Power Tools Spring 2023 Hero

Benefits: Ridgid has a strong selection of core 18V cordless power tools, and some unique and innovative tools sprinkled in. The brand offers a good balance between performance and price.

The Limited Lifetime Service Agreement covers parts, service, and batteries – with some restrictions.

Downsides: Smaller selection of 18V tools compared to other brands, 12V system has been abandoned (although you can still buy replacement batteries or chargers).

What I Said in 2021: Ridgid is a good brand and they have continued to expand and enhance their 18V cordless power tool system over the years. Some of their tools offer innovations not found in other cordless systems, giving some users reason to choose Ridgid as their primary or secondary brand.

What’s Changed? Ridgid has continued to launch new 18V cordless power tools. They haven’t been as innovative as in recent years, but are still going strong. Ridgid’s 18V line continues to be exclusive to Home Depot.

Ryobi

Ryobi 18V One HP Compact Brushless Cordless Power Tool Series

Benefits: Ryobi’s 18V One+ platform is huge, and satisfies a broad range of user needs, from beginner DIYer to value-minded pros.

Downsides: Ryobi’s commitment to DIYer users (a great thing) also means they haven’t updated their battery system to a slide-style form factor yet. Lower-priced tools have compromised features or performance.

What I Said in 2021: Ryobi is a very customer-centric brand that is well-liked and well-regarded among their many loyal DIYer users. Some pros will use certain Ryobi tools as well, especially for specialty tasks where a tool might not see frequent use.

What’s Changed? Ryobi has expanded their line of compact brushless 18V One+ HP tools, and added new home, hobby, and lifestyle tools, including from a new USB Lithium line of 4V-class tools and accessories.

Ryobi tools remains exclusive to Home Depot.

Skil

Skil PWRCore 12 Brushless Drill

Benefits: Skil’s new cordless power tool platforms offer very high bang for the buck – competitive performance and above-average features for what you pay.

Downsides: Limited selection.

What I Said in 2021: Under new ownership, Skil has refreshed their branding and launched all-new cordless power tool lineups. They’re definitely worth a chance for DIYers looking to get modern features at affordable pricing.

What’s Changed? Skil has launched more tools and updated their core 12V and 20V class offerings. They have also expanded their cordless outdoor power tool offerings. With respect to core offerings – drills, drivers, and saws – Skil tools in many cases outperform competing products while also being more affordable.

Skil is definitely worth paying attention to.

Craftsman V-Series Ratcheting Wrenches are Still on Sale https://toolguyd.com/craftsman-v-series-ratcheting-wrenches-sale-2023/ https://toolguyd.com/craftsman-v-series-ratcheting-wrenches-sale-2023/#comments Tue, 18 Jul 2023 02:52:56 +0000 https://toolguyd.com/?p=107541 Craftsman V-Series Ratcheting Wrench SetThese are definitely worth a quick look, especially at 20% off!]]> Craftsman V-Series Ratcheting Wrench Set

Craftsman’s V-Series ratcheting wrenches dropped in price a couple of days before Prime Day, and they’re still on sale.

I bought a set of the metric wrenches (shown above) and SAE sizes (shown below).

Note: Stanley Black & Decker is a ToolGuyd sponsor, and you’ll see the first of those posts shortly. There will be sponsored posts tied to the Craftsman V-Series, but this is not one of them.

Craftsman V-Series SAE Ratcheting Wrench Set

One of the best parts about these sets is the compact holder. The wrenches fit in neatly, and the case halves fold together to create a very packable and grabbable size.

Craftsman V-Series Ratcheting Wrench I-Beam Profile

I really like the I-beam-style grip, and the angle of the open head. It’s comfortable, and from earlier experiences, the head angle can engage a fastener in tight spaces.

Facom 440 Combination Wrenches

The design is not new to me; I love my Facom wrenches of a very similar design. (Facom is a pro-grade tool brand that’s more widely known overseas and is also owned by Stanley Black & Decker.)

My experience with Facom tools is part of why I am a big fan of the V-Series. With the Craftsman V-Series, Stanley Black & Decker has greatly improved the availability of their European hand tool designs, and at more affordable prices. Plus I don’t have to go through the hassle of ordering them from international sellers.

I have already used Craftsman V-Series wrenches, but I saw this new sponsorship as an opportunity to get a set of the ratcheting wrenches that I could call my own.

Proto Spline I-Beam Ratcheting Wrench

I bought several Proto I-beam-style ratcheting spline wrenches a few years ago – just the sizes I use most often, and then a couple more. I like them a lot, but couldn’t justify a metric set, or a second SAE set I can “grab and go.”

Unfortunately, only the ratcheting wrenches are on sale, and the non-ratcheting combination wrenches are not.

Are these the best ratcheting wrenches on the market today? Probably not. I am a big fan of the design, and the portable sets fill a long-noticed hole in my tool kit.

SAE Sizes: 5/16″ 3/8″ 7/16″ 1/2″ 9/16″ 5/8″ 11/16″ 3/4″

Metric Sizes: 8 10 11 12 13 14 17 19mm

Price: $67.98 for the SAE set, $68.98 for the metric set

Both sets are backordered at the moment, and there’s no indication as to how long they’ll stay at the current deal pricing. Amazon’s “save 20%” claims are accurate – the sets were indeed $84.98 each at the end of June.

Lowe’s has both sets at $84.98 each. I included the links in case you want to see more user reviews.

For those of you that bought a set on Prime Day, what do you think about these wrenches?

Because of the SBD/Craftsman sponsorship, I’m biting my tongue here a bit and masking my extreme enthusiasm for this style of wrench. I haven’t reviewed these ratcheting wrenches yet, but I did review the Facom 440 series non-ratcheting combination wrenches, here.

Stanley Black & Decker has reworked their Hand and Power Tool Brand Positioning chart for the first time since at least 2017.

The company, which owns Craftsman, Dewalt, and other popular tool brands, featured the updated chart in their recent May 2023 Investor Presentation.

The chart is not necessarily to be taken at face value, and is more of a rough guide as to how Stanley Black & Decker sees the various tool brands positioned relative to each other.

Keep in mind that the Investor Presentation is a corporate document that’s not created for tool users. Still, I always find these things to be interesting and insightful.

Here, we’ll take a look at the new chart to see what has changed.

Stanley Black Decker Tool Brand Positioning 2023 vs 2022

The way I interpret these charts, the left of the brand name represents the start of the segment coverage bar.

To start, Stanley Black & Decker expanded the target user segments slightly.

The Consumer segment has become Consumer and DIY, and the Tradesman segment has become Tradesman and Advanced DIY. The Professional and Automotive/Industrial segments remain unchanged.

The OPP (opening price point), MPP (mid price point) and HPP (high price point) tiers also remain unchanged.

Let’s take a look at how Stanley Black & Decker repositioned their tool brands.

Black & Decker – The iconic beginner DIYer and household tool brand hasn’t budged from the consumer segment, with the only change being a refreshed logo.

Craftsman – Whereas the Craftsman brand spanned most of the length of the chart, from consumer to automotive/industrial, it is now centered in the tradesman and advanced DIY segment.

Additionally, the Craftsman brand was bumped down slightly, from slightly above the MPP level to right on it.

Craftsman’s segment range is much tighter than before, suggesting that Stanley Black & Decker has reevaluated their core target audience since first adding the brand to their chart in 2017.

The short segment width is not exactly representative of Craftsman’s full line, as I would argue the Craftsman V-Series tools extend the brand into professional and even automotive/industrial segments.

Dewalt – The bar for Dewalt, Stanley Black & Decker’s premier cordless power tool and jobsite storage brand, has expanded slightly, and now more noticeably reaches into the tradesman segment.

Dewalt’s product catalog does span tradesman, professional, and automotive/industrial segments, making the latest positioning a more accurate representation.

Stanley – Stanley’s bar spans from the tradesman and advanced DIY segment and into the professional space. Curiously, the bar for Stanley pulls back slightly from the professional segment, but not by a lot. They also swapped spots with Craftsman with respect to relative pricing tiers.

Stanley FatMax – Stanley FatMax is no longer included on Stanley Black & Decker’s brand positioning chart.

Stanley Black & Decker confirmed that support for the Stanley FatMax sub-brand has not changed.

Bostitch – Bostitch is no longer included on the brand positioning chart, but is still featured on the Tools & Outdoor brand slide in Stanley Black & Decker’s presentation. This is perhaps because, especially compared to their sibling brands’ broader product offerings, Bostitch has become more of a specialized brand, with a focus on air and fastening tools.

Porter Cable – Porter Cable, which announced an exclusive partnership with Tractor Supply in 2021, remains on the chart – surprisingly. The brand previously spanned tradesman and professional segments and now only sits over the tradesman and advanced DIY segment. Additionally, the bar has shifted slightly to the left, a bit towards the consumer and DIY segment.

Irwin – Irwin’s bar has increased and been shifted upwards. Rather than being placed as an entry to mid price point brand, Irwin now sits above the mid price point line, above Craftsman and Stanley, but still below Dewalt.

The bar for Irwin has also shifted to the right, slightly away from tradesman and advanced DIY segment and more towards the professional segment.

Lenox – Lenox has also shifted a bit, and is now centered over the professional user segment. Interestingly, Lenox has moved above Dewalt in the price point scale.

Proto, Mac Tools, Facom – These three brands’ positions are largely unchanged, except for Proto and Facom swapping places with respect to price point.

Looking back at Sears’ “Lobster Claw” Craftsman Wrenches https://toolguyd.com/sears-lobster-claw-craftsman-wrenches/ https://toolguyd.com/sears-lobster-claw-craftsman-wrenches/#comments Fri, 12 May 2023 00:12:40 +0000 https://toolguyd.com/?p=105267 Craftsman Professional USA Made vs Imported Wrenches Sears 2010-2011This looks to have been a turning point for Sears and the iconic tool brand.]]> Craftsman Professional USA Made vs Imported Wrenches Sears 2010-2011

Sears used to be a great place to buy quality tools at reasonable prices. Back when I was building up my hand tool collection, the retailer was a frequent go-to, and not just for Craftsman tools.

I was digging through my archive of smartphone images and came across the two displayed here. This, I’d say, was the turning point.

On the left is a Craftsman Professional 11pc 12pt short combination wrench set, model 9-44138, with a retail price of $69.99.

On the right is a Craftsman 11pc 12pt short combination wrench set, also model 9-44138, and also priced at $69.99.

There was mixed inventory on the shelves for a while, until the USA-made tools sold through.

Craftsman Professional USA Made Wrench Set Label Closeup 2011

The Craftsman Professional wrench set was marked as being made in the USA, and the other set was not – it was imported.

Sears made it easy to identify their made-in-USA Craftsman tools at a glance.

Craftsman Professional USA Made vs Imported Wrenches at Sears 2010-2011 Closeup

Here’s a closeup of the largest wrench size from the two sets, 1-inch wrenches for both.

Craftsman’s replacement wrenches were described in online communities as having “lobster claws,” due the added metal mass at the open end, possibly for strength reinforcement.

Look at the open end, box end, and the Craftsman logo. These were not at all the same wrenches – the newer ones looked more cheaply made – and yet Sears was charging the same for both sets.

Similar changes were made across the board.

New Craftsman Professional Wrench Set
A page from Sears’ 2013-14 Craftsman tool catalog.

When Sears reintroduced their Craftsman Professional brand in 2013, the new imported wrenches featured the same “lobster claw” open end.

The perception of a quality difference was enough for Sears to lose the support of their once-loyal tool shoppers.

The “lobster claw” design was the turning point. Sears made many more changes to their Craftsman and “Blue Tool Crew” catalogs, driving tool users further away.

Sears had announced new USA-made Craftsman wrenches and ratchets in early 2016, but as far as I am aware, the revamped Craftsman Industrial tool line never launched. Stanley Black & Decker announced their plans to buy the Craftsman brand from Sears exactly one year later.

Craftsman Battery-Powered Pressure Washer – First Look https://toolguyd.com/craftsman-cordless-pressure-washer-cmcpw1500n2/ https://toolguyd.com/craftsman-cordless-pressure-washer-cmcpw1500n2/#comments Fri, 28 Apr 2023 20:53:48 +0000 https://toolguyd.com/?p=104858 Craftsman Cordless Pressure Washer CMCPW1500N2 HeroHere's a look at the new Craftsman dual battery-powered cordless pressure washer.]]> Craftsman Cordless Pressure Washer CMCPW1500N2 Hero

Craftsman has a new V20 2x20V Max cordless pressure washer, model CMCPW1500N2.

The new Craftsman cordless pressure washer is part of their Brushless RP line of tools and equipment, and is compatible with their other V20 cordless power tools and outdoor power tools and batteries.

The new cold water pressure can deliver up to 1500 PSI and 1.2 GPM.

Craftsman says that the pressure washer is self-priming and compatible with any fresh water source. They add that no garden hose is needed.

Craftsman Cordless Pressure Washer CMCPW1500N2 Battery Compartment

The battery compartment fits (2) V20 Li-ion batteries, which are both required for operation.

Craftsman Cordless Pressure Washer CMCPW1500N2

Features include Weatherguard Technology, which helps to protect the tool (but not batteries or charger) from dust and moisture, a boost button that brings the application pressure to 1500 PSI, and onboard storage for all of the accessories.

The pressure washer comes with a wand, 4 spray tips, a high pressure hose, and a suction hose.

Craftsman Cordless Pressure Washer CMCPW1500N2 Extending Handle

Wheels and an extending handle, as well as a compact size, help with portability.

Features & Specs

  • 40V Max operation with 2x 20V Max batteries
  • 1500 PSI max
  • 1.2 GPM max
  • 3 speeds
    • Low: 800 PSI
    • High: 1000 PSI
    • Boost: 1500 PSI
  • Self-priming
  • Onboard accessory storage
  • Wheels for easy moving
  • up to 60 minutes runtime on 2x 9Ah batteries

The maximum pressure and water flow are achieved when using the 15° nozzle on boost speed.

Craftsman says that the new pressure washer delivers up to 60 minutes of runtime with the 2x 9Ah batteries and turbo nozzle and low speed.

They add that the new cordless pressure washer delivers 4X runtime compared to their handheld cordless power cleaner, model CMCPW350.

Price: $449

At this time, the cordless pressure washer is only available as part of a kit (CMCPW1500N2), which comes with 2x CMCB209 9Ah batteries and 2 chargers.

Discussion

Craftsman’s product images and description don’t really elaborate upon the “you don’t need a garden hose!” aspect.

It comes with two hoses, one that connects the cleaning wand to the pressure washer, and another that connects the pressure washer to a water source.

Craftsman Cordless Pressure Washer CMCPW1500N2 Hoses and Rear View

While the water source will usually be a garden hose or hose spigot, product images also show a ball float and what looks to be a removable filtered intake.

Craftsman says that “this unit has a self-priming feature allowing you to draw from any fresh water source” and that “no garden hose is needed.”

I suppose that this means a large bucket or a barrel can be used in remote locations or other situations where a garden hose might be inconvenient or inaccessible.

A reader brought up a great question about the usefulness of cordless pressure washers in general. We’ll talk about that soon.

For now, I’ll pipe in that products like this provide cordless convenience for users that want or need it. It gives you options. It’s not for everyone though; if you don’t need a cordless solution, there are plenty of electric/AC corded and gas engine pressure washers that might serve your needs better.

Cordless pressure washers can benefit users for whom AC and gas-powered models are not ideal. There’s also going to be some overlap between user groups, where a user can go in any direction.

So, what do you think about the new Craftsman cordless pressure washer?

In my opinion, it’s an interesting and positive step for the brand, and this looks like the perfect type of tool to leverage Craftsman’s V20 9Ah batteries.

Craftsman will be discontinuing operations at their Fort Worth, Texas facility, where they were working to produce new USA-made hand tools.

Stanley Black & Decker announced the new 425,000 square foot factory in mid-2019, where they planned to produce Craftsman mechanics hand tools, including ratchets, wrenches, sockets, and tool sets.

In late-2022, Craftsman said that the factory was open, operating, and producing tools.

In a conversation I had today with a Craftsman executive, I was told that they expect for the factory to be closed by mid-2024.

Why is Craftsman Closing the New Factory?

Craftsman USA Tools Announcement March 2020

Three years ago, Craftsman teased that something new was “chroming soon” and that new USA-made mechanics tools and sets were on the way.

A lot has happened since then, with the pandemic and supply chain issues severely impacting many industries.

When Stanley Black & Decker first announced their plans, they said the new Craftsman hand tool factory would leverage some of the most advanced manufacturing technologies available to optimize productivity and sustainability.

I was told today that the success of the plant required innovative solutions and new-to-world processes to all come together consistently.

They hoped to overcome numerous obstacles, but ultimately could not.

According to the official announcement, this and other actions taken by the company are “designed to deliver $2 billion of cost savings and are reflective of current economic conditions.”

What About the Tools Already Produced?

Craftsman We Build Pride Forth Worth Texas Factory Teaser 2022

I was told that tools produced at the Fort Worth facility will be available for sale at existing distributors. Once those tools sell out, they will not be replenished.

What Does this Mean for USA-Made Craftsman Tools?

While this is obviously a major and disappointing setback, Craftsman insists they remain committed to USA production. They strive to “produce as much here as humanly possible.”

Additional News

Stanley Black & Decker is also transferring operations from their Cheraw, South Carolina facility, to their facilities in Jackson and Gallatin, Tennessee.

According to their website, key products made at this factory include Dewalt and Stanley Black & Decker saws, tape measures, and tool boxes.

The transfer of Cheraw, South Carolina operations will affect 182 employees, with 80 jobs added in Tennessee, and the discontinuation of operations at Fort Worth, Texas will impact 175 employees. Stanley Black & Decker says they are focused on providing a smooth transition and support services for affected employees.

  • Tool Storage
  • Hand Tools
  • Vehicle Maintenance
  • Power Tools and Accessories
  • Electronics

  • Storage and Workspace
  • Office and School Furniture

Craftsman tools are primarily sold at Lowe’s, ever since Stanley Black & Decker acquired and relaunched the brand, with select tools also available at Amazon, Ace Hardware, and other retailers.

It will be interesting to see what comes from this development.

I wonder if some of Craftsman’s more premium tools be launching at Zoro as well, specifically their V-Series tools, and the potential for USA-made hand tools.

Stanley Black & Decker is still working to launch new USA-made Craftsman hand tools.

I recently posted a minor progress update, and as we patiently continue waiting, now seems like a good time to examine what took place over the past 15 years.

What Happened to Craftsman’s focus on USA-made tools?

Luckily, I chronicled the important happenings here on ToolGuyd, making it possible to build a rough timeline of events.

~2007-2008 (15-16 Years Ago) – I started building up my tool kit with many of Sears’ USA-made Craftsman tools. I grew very fond of the brand, thanks to the USA-made tool selection, quality, and value pricing.

I bought screwdrivers, mechanics tool sets, pliers, ratchets, drive accessories, wire strippers, hammers, punches, chisels, cold chisels, mallets, tool boxes, a hacksaw, blades, power tool accessories, pry bars, woodworking tools, and more.

Craftsman was a popular go-to tool brand.

Craftsman 2008 All Sockets & Wrenches Made in USA

2008 (14 Years Ago) – Sears’ Craftsman tool catalogs proclaimed that “All Craftsman sockets and wrenches are proudly made in the USA.”

Speaking as a tool user, things were great! Craftsman was by far my favorite hand tool brand, and they offered USA-made tools in nearly every category imaginable.

Some of my Craftsman and Craftsman Professional tools were not made in the USA; I bought Craftsman pliers that were made in Germany, and I believe my Craftsman hacksaw was made in Sweden.

2010 (12.5 Years Ago) – Sears started introducing imported Craftsman hand tools: All Craftsman Sockets & Wrenches Are Proudly Made In….

The new products were tools that complemented existing offerings, such as ratcheting elbow wrenches, and also lower-priced offerings, such as dog bone wrenches and universal spline wrenches.

Nothing was being replaced – yet – but, this is when the changes began.

2012 (10.5 Years Ago)Sears discontinued Craftsman Professional and many USA-made hand tools. At this point it seemed that Sears and Craftsman had shifted their priorities. Nobody could provide any answers, other than to confirm the Craftsman Professional line was being discontinued.

2013 (9.5 Years Ago)Sears launched new imported Craftsman Professional tools.

Sears was replacing formerly USA-made Craftsman hand tools with similar-looking imported tools. The new versions were widely considered to be inferior.

2013 (9.5 Years Ago) – Sears shifted from USA to import suppliers across many product categories. For instance – FYI: Craftsman Pry Bars Now Made in Taiwan.

2014 (8.5 Years Ago)Sears describes Craftsman as “America’s #1 brand of mechanics tools.”

2015 (7.5 Years Ago) – a new manager at Sears and Craftsman reached out, and I shared my many grievances about how they hollowed-out the brand. I was optimistic they were serious about making positive changes, but nothing was ever done. What Do You Think About Craftsman and Sears? Your Voice WILL Be Heard!

Many long-term Craftsman tool fans had grown very dejected about the brand.

Craftsman and Sears never followed up.

2021, Fall (1 Year Ago)Craftsman launched new V-Series tools at Lowe’s. These are premium (imported) tools that strongly resemble tools from Stanley Black & Decker’s Facom and USAG tool brands, which are popular in Europe and other regions outside the USA.

2022, March (9 Months Ago) – Craftsman still had not launched new USA-made hand tools; I expressed my frustration: Five Years Later, Where are Craftsman’s USA-Made Tools?

2022, May (7 Months Ago)Craftsman said their new facility was built and nearing completion.

2022, November (1 Month Ago)Craftsman has said their new facility is currently open and operating.

2023 – New Craftsman USA-made hand tools??

Discussion

Sears had essentially destroyed Craftsman’s USA-made hand tool legacy in the span of just a few short years.

Craftsman started launching new imported tools in 2010. Entire USA-made product lines and categories were discontinued by 2012, and Sears was actively replacing formerly USA-made tools with imported versions in 2013.

I would mark 2012 as the start of very many unwelcome changes that turned many formerly loyal users away from Craftsman.

Sears sold the Craftsman brand to Stanley Black & Decker in 2017, and declared bankruptcy in October 2018.

Craftsman has been under Stanley Black & Decker’s ownership for nearly 6 years now. They launched new tools in 2018 following a major retail agreement with Lowe’s. That was more than 4 years ago.

Craftsman’s new factory in Texas is said to be open and operating, with the first new tools presumably on the way soon.

I would say that, under Stanley Black & Decker ownership and direction, the Craftsman brand has essentially become the stand-in for Kobalt tools at Lowe’s. The tools are decent, conveniently available, and affordable, but there’s little distinction or appeal beyond that.

High quality USA-made tools at competitive pricing is what drew me to the Craftsman brand in the first place, and why I continued to choose Craftsman over all other brands for very many tool purchases.

The Craftsman brand doesn’t evoke the same sentiment in me anymore, and it hasn’t for around 10 years now.

It will be interesting to see what happens over the next few years.

Craftsman didn’t just offer USA-made hand tools, they offered high quality tools with a lifetime warranty, and at competitive pricing.

After Sears reversed course on all that, Craftsman merely offered tools of average quality, little distinction, and at average pricing.

The challenge is in being able to offer USA-made tools that shoppers will seek out to buy. Sears and Craftsman did just that for a long time. Sears and Craftsman didn’t just sell tools, they were the preferred choice of tools for many.

Back in 2014, Sears described Craftsman as “America’s #1 brand of mechanics tools.” After all that has happened, can Stanley Black & Decker get Craftsman back to that? Yes, I believe so. But will they?

As you might be aware, Craftsman has been working to open a new USA-based hand tool factory.

ToolGuyd readers have been asking for an update as to when the first wave of USA-made Craftsman tools will launch, but unfortunately there’s little new information to share.

Back in May 2022, we reported that Craftsman’s new USA-based hand tools facility was “built and nearing completion,” as had been conveyed to ToolGuyd by Craftsman and Stanley Black & Decker.

I was told that:

The first USA-made Craftsman mechanics hand tools built at this facility are expected to launch by the end of 2022, and will include 59pc, 88pc, and 134pc tool sets.

I was also told that, following the initial launch, Craftsman would be ramping up production and expanding their USA-made hand tools in 2023.

I checked Lowe’s stores and Craftsman’s online retailer partners several times over the past few weeks, and could not find any USA-made mechanics tools SKUs for this past holiday shopping season.

It is now December 29th, 2022, inarguably “the end of 2022,” and it appears that Craftsman had missed their anticipated launch window.

Shown above is a mechanics tool set recently promoted by Craftsman’s social media account, but it appears to be one of their existed imported SKUs.

Towards the end of November, I asked Craftsman for an update, and they said:

Our Fort Worth facility is currently open and operating. We have produced tools at the Fort Worth facility, but we are not yet ready to provide a further update.

This is still positive progress, that their new facility is currently open and operating, and that tools have been produced.

The launch delay could have resulted from unanticipated hindrances, a strategic executive decision by Stanley Black & Decker’s new CEO, or other factors.

But, also keep in mind that neither Craftsman or Stanley Black & Decker has made any concrete announcements yet; all of their updates so far have been via social media teasers.

Thinking aloud, I have been wondering what Craftsman’s long-term strategy will look like. The brand launched premium – and pricey – V-Series tools in late 2021, but I don’t believe they expanded upon those offerings in 2022.

Craftsman V-Series tools deliver great performance, and in my opinion should be more enthusiastically promoted by the brand and adopted by end users. Hopefully the eventual USA-made tools will be promoted by Craftsman and their retail partners with greater energy.

Has Craftsman expanded upon any of their hand tool offerings recently? Have there been any innovations recently? I’m sorry, but no – the paid-entry “innovation awards” Craftsman has been patting themselves on the back for don’t count.

Are we – tool users asking for Craftsman to get back to USA hand tool production – even the target audience for the tools they have planned? How many of us are in the market for mechanics tool starter sets, and how many of us would buy specific open stock tools or tools other than those commonly included in socket sets?

I know that Craftsman launching USA-made hand tools is important to me, but what am I looking or waiting to buy? I have relied on Stanley Black & Decker’s Proto line of professional and industrial hand tools for certain tool and accessory needs.

Craftsman is unlikely to want to cannibalize from their existing pro tool lines. Without further details from Craftsman, and just going by the limited information they shared so far, I’m not convinced that any of their initial offerings will suit my particular needs or wants.

Because of all this, I try to be forgiving of the lengthy delays. It might be a while before there are USA-made Craftsman hand tools that suit my personal tool needs.

Craftsman committed to USA production when Stanley Black & Decker acquired the brand. Here is some of what they said in 2017:

We are committed to bringing Craftsman’s manufacturing back to the United States, using materials from around the world…

Stanley Black & Decker will focus on U.S. manufacturing, using global materials…

Stanley Black & Decker also believes it can bring innovation and investment back to Craftsman…

We’re about to enter 2023.

Despite the wait, there is nothing to suggest that any of these goals have changed.

I expect for Stanley Black & Decker and Craftsman to make good on these claims, and hope it’s just a matter of waiting a little longer.

What will a couple more months of waiting now going to matter 5 or 10 years down the road? All of this will likely be forgotten or forgiven by then. Or so I keep telling myself to stave off my impatience.

Lowe’s has a Super-Cool Craftsman Special for Black Friday https://toolguyd.com/lowes-craftsman-power-wheels-black-friday-2022/ https://toolguyd.com/lowes-craftsman-power-wheels-black-friday-2022/#comments Tue, 22 Nov 2022 14:00:00 +0000 https://toolguyd.com/?p=97863 Craftsman V20 Cordless Power Wheels HeroLowe's launched a surprising special for Black Friday 2022.]]> Craftsman V20 Cordless Power Wheels Hero

One of Lowe’s Black Friday 2022 specials is a huge surprise – a Craftsman motorized riding toy.

The Craftsman Power Wheels-like riding vehicle – modeled after real-world UTVs – is powered with the brand’s V20 (20V Max) cordless tool batteries.

Lowe’s is selling the Craftsman V20 riding toy as a kit, which comes with the vehicle, a 2Ah battery, and a charger, for $249.

You can order online with delivery (for a fee), or free in-store or curbside pickup.

I have not seen this at any nearby Lowe’s stores yet. In-store or curbside pickup is probably the better way to go, as these might not last very long once they’re on the sales floor.

Craftsman V20 Cordless Power Wheels Gear Shifter

The Craftsman V20 UTV toy has a slew of real life-like features, such as working gear shift for forward and reverse controls.

Craftsman V20 Cordless Power Wheels Steering Wheel and Sound Controls

Kids can also control the lights, horn, and sound effects via buttons on the dashboard.

Craftsman V20 Cordless Power Wheels Working Lights Display

The Craftsman toy also has working headlights, as well as a working light bar.

According to the specs, the lights are powered by separate AA batteries.

Craftsman V20 Cordless Power Wheels Features

Additional features include dual V20 motors for more power and better traction, two parent-selectable speeds (2.5 and 5 MPH) that can be toggled via a hidden rocker switch, and rear open storage compartment.

Craftsman says the 2Ah battery charges “lightning fast” when “compared to other battery-powered ride-on toys.” The battery is fully recharged in one hour with the included charger. Runtime is said to be “up to 40 minutes.”

To sum things up, this is a dual motor UTV riding toy, with controllable LED headlights and light bar, plus horn and sound effects, and it’s powered by Craftsman V20 cordless power tool batteries.

There’s an obvious downside – the recommended age range is 3 to 6 years old.

Price: $249

Thank you to Royce for the heads-up and image!

Both of the new tool boxes have “made in the USA with global materials” labeling. Neither of the new products are listed on Lowe’s website yet.

Popularity Tool Trends: Craftsman vs Ryobi vs Kobalt https://toolguyd.com/craftsman-ryobi-kobalt-tools-interest-trends-comparison/ https://toolguyd.com/craftsman-ryobi-kobalt-tools-interest-trends-comparison/#comments Wed, 14 Sep 2022 12:00:00 +0000 https://toolguyd.com/?p=93761 Craftsman vs Ryobi vs Kobalt Tools 12 Month Trend Ending 08312022Let's take a look at search interest trends for 3 competing tool brands.]]> Craftsman vs Ryobi vs Kobalt Tools 12 Month Trend Ending 08312022

I wonder – how have Craftsman Tools, Ryobi Tools, and Kobalt Tools compared against each other, with respect to consumer interest trends?

Let’s use Google Trends to compare relative interest for the 3 search terms over time.

Craftsman has a very broad product catalog, and the same could be said about Kobalt, while Ryobi is mainly a power tool brand.

Thus, I should caution that this is not an apples-to-apples comparison. A fairer comparison would be to compare trends for more specific and narrow-focused terms, such as “Craftsman V20 vs Ryobi 18V vs Kobalt 24V.”

Still, the results should be interesting and presumably accurate-enough to depict the brands’ relative consumer interest and popularity over time.

Craftsman is a Stanley Black & Decker tool brand, and is predominantly sold at Lowe’s. Craftsman produces a very wide range of tools and accessories, and also lifestyle-type home and garage products and accessories.

Ryobi is a TTI brand – for the sake of this conversation – that is exclusive to Home Depot. Ryobi primarily offers power tools and equipment, as well as accessories, storage products, and they have been dabbling more in hand tools.

Kobalt is a Lowe’s tool brand. Their visibility seemed to dip in recent years, as Lowe’s focused more energy on promoting Craftsman tools and related products. But, we have been seeing more Kobalt tools in-store and online, and it seemed interesting to throw the brand into the mix.

Note: The charts embedded below are interactive, as opposed to being screenshots. Please let me know if you have problems with them – I can swap in images if needed, but they won’t be as sharp.

Update: The Google Trends embeds weren’t working well on all mobile devices, and so I replaced them with static images. You can replicate these efforts at Google Trends.

12-Month Comparison

Kobalt Tools vs Craftsman Tools vs Ryobi Tools 12-Month Google Trends-1

On average for the past 12 months (ending August 31, 2022), there was slightly more search traffic for “Ryobi Tools” than “Craftsman Tools.”

There is enough relative interest for “Kobalt Tools” for me to glad I included it here.

5-Year Comparison

Kobalt Tools vs Craftsman Tools vs Ryobi Tools 5-Year Google Trends-2

Looking at the 5-year trend, this is where things get even more interesting.

Craftsman (red), Ryobi (yellow), and Kobalt (blue) are plotted for the period of September 1, 2017 thru August 31, 2022. Each data point reflects one week’s worth of search frequency.

It seems that there has been a distinct decline in the relative interest for Craftsman Tools, but mainly during holiday shopping seasons.

Unsurprisingly, there are two discernable peaks for Craftsman and Ryobi search terms – a significant peak that coincides with the winter holiday shopping season, and a subtler peak that approximately coincides with late-spring and Father’s Day.

Craftsman – The overall inter-holiday-season average appears to have remained fairly steady over the past 5 years. However, there is a distinct downwards trend with respect to seasonal peaks, suggesting waning popularity.

Ryobi – Inter-seasonal popularity for “Ryobi Tools” has been steadily increasing. Their interest peaks have also been increasing in max amplitude over time.

It’s interesting to note that the interest in Ryobi Tools was higher around June 2018 than December 2017 and 2018 periods. This could be due to Father’s Day, the spring DIY season, or other seasonal factors.

The same seemed to happen in subsequent years. There’s as much search interest – if not more – around June compared to December.

Kobalt – Lowe’s private label tool brand has maintained consistent interest throughout the period, although they don’t seem to enjoy the same seasonal interest and popularity peaks as the other brands examined here.

Comparative Popularity

The bar graph to the left of each chart shows the comparative total interest over the entire selected period.

For the 12-month period ending August 31, 2022, Ryobi Tools was a slightly more common search term than Craftsman Tools.

For the 5-year period ending on August 31, 2022, Craftsman Tools was more searched-for than Ryobi Tools, but this is largely due to the period between September 2017 and March 2020.

Kobalt Tools vs Craftsman Tools vs Ryobi Tools 2-Year Google Trends-3

If we look at a 2-year trend, search interest for Craftsman Tools and Ryobi Tools are close to even. As seen in the 12-month trend, it appears that interest in Ryobi surpassed that for Craftsman, at least short-term.

Are These Comparisons Fair?

Here’s where we get into more academic discussion – if you’re interested.

Kobalt vs Craftsman vs Ryobi 12-Month Google Trends-4

What if we look at Craftsman vs Ryobi vs Kobalt, as opposed to “Brand + Tools” keywords? The chart then looks very different, but there’s greater uncertainty.

Do all of these search terms for “Craftsman” refer to the tool brand, or do they also refer to craftsman, a person skilled in a particular craft?

Adding a secondary term such as “Tools” examines a subset of data, but this should help to more confidently avoid uncertainties or factors that could throw things off.

Kobalt vs Craftsman vs Ryobi 10-Year Google Trends-5

Here is a 10-year chart comparing search interest in “Kobalt,” “Craftsman,” and “Ryobi.” These trends can still be of interest if you take into account that there could be non-tool-related search interest mixed in with what we’re actually looking for.

There’s always the potential for data to be skewed, and so it’s a better idea to compare trends than to compare hard data.

For instance, it’s apparent in the plots that peak interest in Craftsman Tools has declined somewhat over the past 5 years, and that interest in Ryobi Tools seems to have increased.

We can look at relative interest in “Craftsman Tools” and “Ryobi Tools,” but this might not perfectly reflect consumer interest in or the popularity of Craftsman tools vs. Ryobi tools.

“Craftsman tools” might still not always be intended as “Craftsman brand tools.”

If the same search term can mean different things, and interest in the different meanings vary over time, the trend data will be meaningless and unreliable.

Meaning, if “Craftsman tools” (tools by Craftsman) and “craftsman tools” (tools by or for craftsmen) change wildly with time, then it’s much harder to draw any conclusions from search interest for the term.

Kobalt vs Craftsman Tools vs Ryobi Tools 10-YearGoogle Trends-6

This chart shows a 10-year comparison between interest in “Kobalt,” “Craftsman Tools,” and “Ryobi Tools.”

Kobalt Tools vs Craftsman Tools vs Ryobi Tools 10-Year Google Trends-7

And this chart shows the same, but with “Kobalt Tools” in place of “Kobalt.”

This is why a comparison of “Brand + Tools” terms is better than just “brand” vs “brand” vs “brand.”

Kobalt Tools 10-Year Google Trends-8

Interestingly, there seems to be increasing interest in “Kobalt” over the past 10 years, whereas interest in “Kobalt Tools” has been relatively flat.

But, if we conduct a test search for “Kobalt,” we see that it’s also a music company and comic book character, among other things. “Kobalt Tools” is more specific, without being too focused.

Ryobi 18V vs Craftsman V20 vs Kobalt 24V

Kobalt 24V vs Craftsman V20 vs Ryobi 18V 4-Year Google Trends-9

This is a 4-year chart showing relative interest in Ryobi 18V compared to Craftsman V20 and Kobalt 24V.

Ryobi’s cordless system is far older and broader than newer systems by Craftsman and Kobalt, and so in addition to new users, there’s a much larger existing user base already interested in the brand.

These trends are not surprising.

Kobalt 24V vs Craftsman V20 4-Year Google Trends-10

It seems that interest in Craftsman and Kobalt cordless systems have been about on-par with each other, and that is surprising.

Kobalt 24V vs Craftsman V20 2-Year Google Trends-11

If we look at one-year trends, “Kobalt 24V” seems to have drawn a little more interest than “Craftsman V20.”

However, do Craftsman V20 users and potential users search “Craftsman V20” as much as a Kobalt 24V user might search for “Kobalt 24V?”

Kobalt Cordless vs Craftsman Cordless 2-Year Google Trends-12

“Craftsman cordless” is a more popular search term than “Kobalt cordless.”

Craftsman Cordless vs Craftsman V20 10-Year Google Trends-13

What about “Craftsman cordless” vs “Craftsman V20?”

Craftsman C3 vs Craftsman V20 10-Year Google Trends-14

“Craftsman C3” – Sears-era Craftsman cordless system vs “Craftsman V20”?

Craftsman C3 vs Craftsman V20 vs Craftsman 19.2V 10-Year Google Trends-15

From a chart that also adds in “Craftsman 19.2V,” we can see that the “C3” line name was a more popular search term. This gives credibility to the idea that “Craftsman V20” is likely a fair measure of popularity or interest for the present system under Stanley Black & Decker ownership.

Craftsman V20 vs Craftsman 20V 4-Year Google Trends-16

But, Craftsman V20 is not as unambiguous a product line as Craftsman C3. Craftsman 20V seems to be a slightly more popular search term, whereas C3 was a significantly more popular term than 19.2V when the brand maintained that cordless system when still under Sears ownership.

Kobalt 18V vs Kobalt V20 vs Kobalt 24V 10-Year Google Trends-17

This is interesting – Kobalt 18V vs 20V vs 24V. The trends suggest far greater interest and relative popularity for the modern 24V Max system. I did not expect this.

Data, Results, Conclusion

Collecting data is easy.

Extracting results from that data takes a little more effort.

Drawing conclusions – that’s the hard part.

How would you interpret the data shown above?

Kobalt Tools vs Craftsman Tools vs Ryobi Tools 10-Year Google Trends-18

To me, it seems that Ryobi is an overall upwards trend, Kobalt is flat but consistently steady, and Craftsman has been on a slight decline, especially from holiday season to holiday season.

Comparing relative popularities might not be entirely fair or accurate, but we can see how interest trends for the respective search terms – Craftsman Tools, Ryobi Tools, Kobalt Tools – compare against each other.

Best Screwdriver Sets for DIYers https://toolguyd.com/best-diy-screwdriver-sets/ https://toolguyd.com/best-diy-screwdriver-sets/#comments Thu, 01 Sep 2022 13:00:00 +0000 https://toolguyd.com/?p=92910 Craftsman 12pc Screwdriver Set at LowesI came across a particularly bad-value screwdriver set, here's what I recommend instead.]]> Let me start off by saying that I didn’t seek out to put together a DIYer screwdriver buying guide.

You see, I was scouting out Labor Day tool deals, which usually involves my snapping a few pics of floor displays for further research at home.

I came across a Craftsman screwdriver set at Lowe’s – your typical multi-piece set aimed at DIYers and casual users – and it struck me as particularly bad value.

I felt that this Craftsman screwdriver set deserves some words, but not in a good way, and so it seemed like a better idea to springboard into a buy this, not that type of discussion.

Lowe’s has a Kobalt screwdriver set that I would absolutely buy over the Craftsman one, but it seemed inadequate to stop there. So, I added in a couple of more recommendations.

Towards the end, I realized that my “here’s what I recommend instead” post had broadened well beyond its original scope, naturally evolving into an impromptu DIYer screwdriver set buying guide.

Because of that, this post reads more linearly than the typical list of recommendations you might be used to. I hope you’re okay with this, and if not, let me know and stay tuned for the update.

Craftsman 12pc Screwdriver Set – What NOT to Get

Craftsman 12pc Screwdriver Set at Lowes

With the Craftsman deal, you get a 12pc bi-material screwdriver set for $34.98, saving you a whopping $3 off its crossed-out “was” price of $37.98.

That’s… not a good bargain, to put it lightly.

You get 6 standard full-size screwdrivers, 2 miniature screwdrivers, 2 stubby-style screwdrivers, a double-ended offset screwdriver, and a screwdriver magnetizer and demagnetizer accessory.

I know that “inflation” and all, but $35 seems like a lot for this.

If you look closely, the large price sticker is covering up what looks to be $27.98, which seems a bit better.

Looking online, this same set is $24.98 with free shipping on $45+ orders.

Readers have recently reported having difficulty getting Lowe’s stores to match online pricing, but one could always try that.

$24.98 is a little better than $27.98 and a lot better than $34.98. Did this set ever sell for $37.98?

I have purchased similar Craftsman screwdrivers before, for review purposes, and the handle is fairly comfortable.

But this configuration? I’d rather spend half as much for just the 6pc set. Or maybe $20 for an 8pc set of full-size drivers.

Stubby-style screwdrivers can come in handy.

Okay – I’d find it appealing if the 6pc full-size and 2pc stubby screwdrivers were together in an 8pc set for $20 or less. Bingo – they have this for $21.98.

If you’re spending $22, another $3 gets you 2 mini drivers of questionable quality, an offset screwdriver that might come in handy one time if you don’t lose it, and a magnetizer/demagnetizer tool that might be good to have if it’s well-made.

But, the Craftsman 12pc set isn’t $25 in stores, it’s only that price online right now. If you’re at the store, which is how I impulse-buy most of my hand tools from Lowe’s or Home Depot stores, it’s $34.98 right now.

Maybe next week it will be $27.98, as seen behind the sticker? But that’s still far away enough from $21.98 for the 8pc set, and I wouldn’t consider it a great deal. It’s an okay upsell, but not a better bargain, if that makes sense.

I think this is an example of what not to get.

Craftsman Model CMHT65071
Item No. 1071663

Would anyone of you choose this Lowe’s-exclusive Craftsman set? I’m worried that maybe my feelings about the set are colored by my reaction to Lowe’s promotional (or pre-promotional?) pricing.

It’s amazing how much pricing can skew one’s opinions. If this Craftsman set had a $20 sticker price, my take on it would be completely different.

I bought a smaller Craftsman set on impulse one year (for testing and editorial exploration purposes), and have nothing against their handle style, or the tip quality for the money.

So, if you can snag it for less, it might be a good buy. But given the pricing I’m seeing, I feel there are better ways to spend the same money today.

Kobalt 20pc Screwdriver Set – Getting Better

Kobalt 20pc Screwdriver Set at Lowes

Alright, so what would I buy instead? If only shopping at Lowe’s, where the aforementioned Craftsman set is an exclusive, they have this Kobalt 20pc screwdriver set for $24.98 online.

Kobalt is a Lowe’s brand, and so you can only find their tools exclusively at Lowe’s. Craftsman is not a Lowe’s brand, but the set discussed above is specifically labeled as an exclusive.

This Kobalt set comes with 11 full-size screwdrivers, 6 mini screwdrivers, 2 offset screwdrivers, and a bottle opener. All of the handles look to have bi-material cushion grips.

What are the sizes? Lowe’s website doesn’t say, they only specify: “Sets feature popular sizes to satisfy wide range of fastening needs.”

From the product images, it looks like you get typical Phillips and slotted screwdriver sizes, plus maybe 2 Torx drivers.

This would be a decent starting-out screwdriver set, at least as far as what you can find at Lowe’s.

I’ve used many Kobalt screwdrivers before – probably with this handle style, I don’t recall – and they’ve always been decent.

You get more for the money here, not just with respect to quantity, but the sizes and type of screwdrivers you get in the set.

Researching just a little more, this set was $20 last year for Black Friday.

Wera 6pc Kraftform Screwdriver Set – My Premium Choice

Wera Kraftform Plus 334-6 Screwdriver Set with Lasertips and Rack

If we’re taking the Craftsman’s in-store price of $35 into consideration, I would instead buy this Wera Kraftform Plus 6pc screwdriver set.

The handles are comfortable, and the tips have a fantastic “Lasertip” anti-cam-out texture.

These Wera screwdrivers are fantastic. I own many, and love them as general purpose screwdrivers. They’re pricey, but worth it.

I have more premium-priced screwdrivers at my disposal, but these Wera’s are a reliable workhorse that will likely always be a part of my kit.

Don’t Forget a Mini Screwdriver!

Stanley 4-in-1 Pocket Screwdriver STHT60082

I would also budget $2-3 to get this Stanley 4-in-1 pocket screwdriver, which covers smaller sizes.

At the time of this posting, it’s $2.28 at Home Depot with free shipping.

Husky 6pc Diamond-Tip Magnetic Screwdriver Set – Great for Under $20

Husky Diamond Tip Screwdriver 6pc Set

If I need to stick to a $25 total budget, I’d get the Stanley 4-in-1 pen driver (here are other pocket and technician screwdriver suggestions), and probably this Husky 6pc screwdriver set from Home Depot.

I really like this Husky 6pc diamond-tip magnetic screwdriver set, and I’ve posted about it before.

Husky is a ToolGuyd sponsor, and so I tried to avoid the brand for this discussion, but I like this screwdriver set too much to forcibly exclude it.

At the time of this posting, this 6pc set is just under $19.

With this set, you get spend a little more than on less expensive assortments, but the grippy diamond grit-coated tips and comfortable handles are worth the added expense.

You also don’t get anything extra you might not need, which means more money goes into the tools you might use more frequently.

20 screwdrivers for $25 seems like a good value, until you realize that just 6 will cover at least 95% of your fastening tasks. If you come across screw styles or sizes that a 6pc screwdriver set cannot handle, you’ll need something else. But will that 20pc set include that “something else,” or will you have to spend more money anyway?

Husky has plenty of other screwdriver set options, many of which I’ve purchased or received for testing, and I’ve had good experiences.

These are far from being my favorite screwdrivers, but they’re good quality and the set offers a great value within its price range.

If You Need More Tip Styles and Sizes

Perhaps consider a good 1/4″ hex bit handle and an assortment of insert bits.

That’s beyond the scope of this post, but I’ll include a single recommendation to get you started in the right direction:

Additional Discussion

If you want the most bang for your buck, Kobalt and Husky have very competitive options for $20 or less – get whichever. Will they be long-lasting high-precision professional-grade tools? Not really, but they’re as good or better than what you can expect for $20.

And if you’re not happy, take it back to the store within your return period, get your money back, increase your budget by a few dollars, and try something else.

So, that said, I’d recommend the Husky set, the Stanley 4-in-1 “pen driver”, and then maybe consider putting a few dollars towards a magnetizer (via Amazon). Add an offset screwdriver (via Amazon) to your shopping list after the first time you really wish you had one.

The Craftsman set though… $25 seems okay for what you get – but certainly not $35. Although, I’m not very impressed with what you get. It’s a standard 6pc screwdriver with 6 more “a little of this and that” tools to help convince DIYer to spend more.

If I sound a bit cranky about this, it’s because I have fallen for such tool sets before. These days, I’d rather spend $20 on 6 tools I need, rather than 6 I need and 6 minor tools or accessories I might someday need.

Also, those-add-on tools will often be duplicated when – not if – you need to buy additional tools down the line.

2 mini screwdrivers or 1 offset screwdriver isn’t enough. When it’s time to buy more sizes, a set will likely be most economical, and then you’re basically spending money on duplicate sizing or functionality.

This happens with a lot of assortments. For instance, when you start working a lot with Torx fasteners, will the 2 sizes included in the Kobalt set be enough? Probably not, and so you’ll eventually need a separate Torx set.

Although, there is benefit in having a tool-at-hand before you know you need it.

Still, this is why I like the Husky and other 6pc sets. You can easily add to them without necessarily duplicating the functionality of what you have.

Coming back to the Wera set – that 6pc set cost nearly double as much as the Husky, but the quality is fantastic, especially the anti-cam-out tips. Most people love the handle shape, but some people don’t – so make sure to try them within your chosen retailer’s return period.

What About Multi-Bit Screwdrivers?

Some of might be thinking that an all-in-one multi-bit screwdriver might be a better choice.

Yes, and no.

I keep both around. Multi-bit screwdrivers are convenient, standalone screwdrivers are often more comfortable and can better fit within recessed handles.

Additionally, more complex projects might require multiple screwdriver sizes. It’s easier to pick up different drivers than to change a multi-bit driver’s configuration back and forth.

Wiha 6-in-1 Multi-Bit Screwdriver

Wiha Made in USA Multi-Bit Screwdrivers

I’m not so excited about Wiha tools anymore, but their multi-bit screwdrivers are solid recommendations. I bought these for review last year and continue to use them regularly with good experiences.

The 6-in-1 is just $13 right now, which seems like a good bargain. I paid $16 for mine in January 2021.

Tekton 6-in-1 Multi-Bit Screwdriver

Tekton Multi-Bit Screwdriver in Black

I also like Tekton’s 6-in-1 multi-bit screwdrivers, priced at just $10 each.

It’s available with black or red handles, and you can choose from a couple of different bit configurations aside from the usual Phillips and slotted loadouts.

Candidly speaking, there is no shortage of multi-bit screwdrivers in the $8 to $20 price range.

Although it’s in need of an update, I have some other recommendations here, and I would also recommend the Klein 11-in-1 (via Amazon).

These would all be in addition to – and not instead of – a 6pc or greater screwdriver set.

What Do You Recommend?

I tried to exclude Husky at first, given the potential conflict of interest (I try my best to avoid making comparisons between sponsor and non-sponsor brands in any circumstances), but it’s my top sub-$20 choice with no reasonable second choices quickly coming to mind.

Irwin, another Stanley Black & Decker brand, used to have some great screwdrivers, but I can’t find them at decent prices today.

Gearwrench also makes great screwdrivers, but their pricing is beyond the scope of this post.

There’s also Felo Ergonic, if you can catch them on sale.

What would you recommend? I’m curious to see what readers’ thoughts are, but please keep the relative price range of $15 to $25 in mind.

Craftsman sent us a news alert, announcing their return as a NASCAR Truck Series sponsor.

The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series will return at Daytona International Speedway on February 17, 2023.

Craftsman was the series’ title sponsor from its inception in 1995 thru 2008.

In addition to sponsoring the Truck Series, Stanley Black & Decker – Craftsman’s parent company – announced that they and NASCAR entered into a multi-year partnership as the “Official Tools Partner of NASCAR” and “Official Tools” of all NASCAR-owned and operated tracks.

The release goes onto say that Stanley Black & Decker brands such as Craftsman, Dewalt, and Mac Tools will be put to work across all NASCAR locations.

The company’s tools will be highly utilized from the pit crews during the big race, to the teams responsible for constructing new racing facilities across the country, generating unrivaled enthusiasm on and off the track.

This means that Stanley Black & Decker tool brands will be widely used, from inside pit crews during races, to the construction of new racing facilities.

Craftsman’s Truck Series sponsorship will also:

serve as a platform to support the launch of new products, amplify seasonal promotions, and highlight the many ways CRAFTSMAN is building pride.

Craftsman’s release says that this will generate “unrivaled enthusiasm on and off the track.”
